Do you think the ring was instrumental in destroying itself?

It was Gandalf’s suspicion of the ring which lead to him discovering what the ring really was.
He first became suspicious of the ring when he questioned Bilbo about how he came to possesse it. Bilbo lied. Gandalf could tell Bilbo was lying, but did not understand why he needed to lie. Bilbo was normally an honest hobbit. I would suspect that Bilbo did not understand himself. It was the rings influence. Thus if the ring had not unduly influenced Bilbo, then Gandalf would never have discovered what it really was and would never have petitioned for it to be destroyed.
