unique opportunity for intermediate and advanced percussionists and voice
students to study with the unique and exciting duo of Glen Velez and Lori
Cotler, on the scenic Outer Banks of North Carolina. The retreat will take
place over the week that includes Columbus Day, locally considered to be the
most idyllic season on the banks.
The camp schedule allows for unprecedented interaction between twenty adult
participants and these two innovative masters in the simultaneous quest for
enhanced musicianship and peace of mind. The camp will include master
classes, opportunities for student jams, and nightly performances from Glen
and Lori. As an extra bonus, two additional retreats will run simultaneously
in nearby cottages: a harmonica intensive with Howard Levy
(www.levyland.com) and the Cello Institute with Eugene Friesen
(www.celloman.com). All participants will also have the opportunity to jam
with percussionists, vocalists, cellists, and harmonica players from the
various groups throughout the week.

community of Ocean Sands. Ocean Sands is located on the expansive northern
beaches of the Outer Banks. Amenities include: gourmet dining, beautiful
meeting rooms for classes, Jacuzzis, decks, a private pool, yoga
instruction, and the breathtaking sunrises and endless unspoiled beaches of
the Outer Banks. Participants may choose to lodge in their own private
suite, to share a room with another student, or to bring a non-participant

LORI
Lori Cotler has been thrilling audiences in the US and around the world with
her boundless global fusion, which melds South Indian Rhythm Voice
(Konakkol), Jewish inspired mystical chant (Niggun), and jazz improvisation
in exotic meters.
Born in New York to a Jewish family, Lori's musical gifts were discovered
early on. With unconditional support from her parents she began formal
musical studies at age six. Although piano was her primary instrument, she
began to explore her voice more intensely at performing arts high school
(Cultural Arts Center, Long Island) with her first jazz mentor Dave Burns
Sr., renowned trumpeter with such musical luminaries as Duke Ellington,
Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and Thelonious Monk.
Lori has performed and recorded recently with saxophone legend Sonny Fortune
(Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner), Grammy winning harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy
(Bela Fleck and the Flecktones), Bansuri flute master Steve Gorn (Paul
Simon, Jack DeJohnette), South Indian flute master V. K. Raman, renowned
Spanish composer Javier Paxarino, Yousif Sheronick (Phillip Glass, Ethos),
Shane Shanahan (Yo-Yo Ma), Grammy winning cellist and composer Eugene
Friesen (Paul Winter Consort), pianist Enrique Haneine (Ricky Martin), among
others.
Lori is a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and is active in the commercial
music field, recording for film and TV using her wide knowledge of
composition and vocal stylings. She composed music for a 9/11 documentary
called "In an Instant," by esteemed filmmaker Bruce Ashley. She recently
recorded vocals for a film score by composer Robert Miller (a protégé of
Aaron Copeland), for a Eugene Jarecki documentary called "Why We Fight,"
winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival in 2005.
Lori holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music and a
Masters Degree in Music Therapy from New York University. Since 2000 Lori
has been a Professor of Music Therapy at the New School University in NYC,
and also teaches voice in the jazz department.
GLEN
Grammy award-winning percussionist Glen Velez is an international soloist
and a seminal figure in the history of the frame drum. Over two decades ago
he brought a new genre of drumming into the Western music world by creating
his own compositional style inspired by years of drumming studies from
various cultures. He introduced Remo Belli and the Remo Drum Company to the
world of frame drums and initiated what has become a whole line of drums
from world cultures.
After fifteen years performing and recording with Steve Reich (1973-198
and Paul Winter (1983-199 , Velez is working as a soloist and with his
Handance Ensemble, while continuing to collaborate with a variety of
prominent artists in many genres. Twentieth century music guru John Cage
wrote a piece especially for Glen in 1989. Velez has also played with
notables such as Pat Metheny, Richard Stoltzman, Suzanne Vega, Howard Levy,
Zakir Hussain, and Sonny Fortune.
His own compositions have been featured on National Public Radio's All
Things Considered and John Schaefer's New Sounds and have been commissioned
by the Rockefeller Foundation, Jerome Foundation, and Reader's Digest. He
has written music for theater and dance and recorded hundreds of albums on
ECM, CBS, RCA, GRP, Warner Brothers, Deutsche Gramophone, Geffen, Nonesuch,
Capital, and Sony.
In addition, he has several instructional videos, five instructional books
and over a dozen recordings of his own music on CMP, Music of the World,
Sounds True, Interworld, Ellipsis Arts and DafTof Records. As a master
teacher who conducts workshops worldwide, Velez developed his own teaching
approach called "The Handance Method." It incorporates voice and body
movement into the process of learning to play the frame drum and has been
presented in hundreds of universities worldwide.
Velez has also designed his own Signature Series of frame drums for the REMO
Drum Company and has recently designed a handmade frame drum series for the
Cooperman Drum Company.
GLEN & LORI
Using frame drums from around the world and vocal stylings that span the
globe, Glen and Lori have created rhythm songs and sensual sound poems that
reflect their innovative approach to drum voice music.
Their concert performances demonstrate the principles of using the voice as
a rhythm instrument and the drum as a melody instrument. The far flung
influences which they incorporate include South Indian drum language
"Konakkol," mystical Jewish chant "Niggun," Jazz Scat Singing and Central
Asian overtone singing "Hoomi," as well as the pulsing rhythms of Arabic
Belly Dance music and the exhilarating syncopation's of South India.
Recent performances have featured ritualistic processional music, in which
Glen and Lori move through the audience, giving listeners a visceral sound
bath of primal drum tones along with the ritual cry of Lori's haunting
melodies.
There are two unusual and exciting features in their shows. In one, Glen
leads the audience in "drum chanting," where the group is immediately drawn
into an energizing communal drum voice experience. In another, Glen teaches
the audience to "overtone sing," a spontaneous overtone choir.
In the past year they have performed at the Berklee Performance Center
(Boston), Plymouth Fine Arts Series (Des Moines, Iowa), Maplewood
Underground Concert Series (Maplewood, NJ), National Music Educators
Conference (Minneapolis, MN), Montgomery College World Arts Festival
(Rockville, MD), House of Musical Traditions (Silver Spring, MD), University
of Vermont (Burlington, VT), National Music Therapy Convention (Minneapolis,
MN), National ORFF Music Convention (Long Beach, CA), Castleton State
College (Castleton, VT), Croussis Festival (Athens, Greece), Palma De
Mallorca Museum (Mallorca, Spain), MusikFest (Bethlehem, PA), 2004 KOSA
Percussion Festival (VT), 2004 Dodge Foundation Poetry Festival (NJ), City
of Palermo Concert Series (Palermo, Italy) and Falun Coppermine Concert
Series (Falun, Sweden) and Silver Mine Guild Music Series (New Canaan, CT).
Glen and Lori ride the sound waves of these two primal instruments into the
future with their unique virtuosity. Their recent CD, "Elephant Hotel" is on
DafTof Records. Their new CD, "Rhythms of Awakening" (Sounds True) will be
available in 2005.
