Re: MY E MAIL ADDRESS IF YOU CAN HELP IS
Hello. I have a 3 1/2 year old that was born with a second thumb (from the second joint up). We had it surgically removed by a hand surgeon when he was 1 year old. I am told that is the best age to have this type of work done so that the child can begin to learn how the reconstructed (in my case) digit feels and works. My son has full use of the reconstructed thumb and it looks really good. I just had my second child who was also born with the same condition. I am on-line looking for more information about how this is genetically transmitted.

picking a doctor
I'm in the same boat, my son has 2 extra thumbs. We just scheduled his surgery yesterday. He'll be 10 months old when he has his first surgery. He has two bones in the extra thumb on his right hand and a complete double thumb on his left hand. He'll have 2 surgeries, 3 months apart. I'm very nervous about the surgery. The doctor we went to is a hand surgeon. It's very confusing and scary trying to pick a doctor. I live in the Detroit, MI area. Does anyone know of any doctors in the area that they would recommend? Even though we already have one, I didn't know about this website at the time, and I didn't really have anyone to ask so we just went by the referral from our pediatrician.

G'day from Australia!
Hello!!
my name is sara and i was reading your post, and i have exactly the same problem with my son, he is my first baby he is 10 weeks old and is so beautiful you don't even notice he has that on his right thumb, his two thumbs are wraped around each other and he will
have the operation when he is 1year old, the Surgeon said he would have to join the two in one, i am not sure as a see the top one better and maybe can be straight out with any kind of instrument? anyway i am now scared to have another one as i think it may happen again, so how are going so far
Well i hope to hear from you soon as this websites are the one really giving me info and support
Cheers
Sara
Re: G'day from Australia!
Do not worry too much about the surgury. I am sure the doctor will do an excellent job. I was told with my 1st child that the extra digit was just a fluke (about 1 in 10,000 they said). However, now that I have a second with the same thing (my 2nd is a little more severe), I know it is not a fluke, but something genetic. No one in my family or my husband's family has this so I do not know where it came from. I have complete confidence in the doctor I used previously and have already taken my 2 month old in to see him. I would not not have more children because of the likelihood of an extra digit since it is so easily taken care of. Good luck to you. Don't worry, be glad you have a healthy baby.

Surgery
Hi! Well my son had his first surgery 2 weeks ago, and the doctor said it went really well. We haven't seen his thumb yet because of the cast. It goes all the way up his arm!! He gets it taken off in three days and I can't wait! It's amazing how well and how quick he adjusted to the cast. Hope all is going well with you.
