Paul Haack Rifleman 75th 290th I Company Wounded 12-28-44
My dad Paul Haack was apparently in a rifle platoon and squad, in I company of the 290th, until suffering an "...accidental gunshot wound to the foot while delivering rations to men in foxholes..." 28 December 44. One account says this happened while passing through some "brush" and another says it happened while passing through a "house." He was admitted to the 102nd hospital in good condition 7 January 45. "...wounds were small and did not require secondary closure. Progress has been satifactory, weight bearing began Jan. 26, 45. Patient complains of persistent headache and has very poor attitude.... Recommend transfer to 102nd rehabilitation..." Dad did later rejoin the 290th "Duty - limited assignment by reason of diagnoses no 2 and 3 type of duty not requiring hikes and marches..." 8 March 45 and was given an honorable discharge as part of that unit 7 August 45.

Dad would never talk about his experiences except to say he saw bodies stacked up like cordwood and that he didn't want to think about those events. I respected his wishes and now he is gone. He died a couple years ago and I am slowly trying to put together his Bulge experience.

Can anyone out there help fill in some of the information about what he probably went through, especially from December 44 until August 45?

Dad joined the Minnesota National Guard after lying about his age in 12-7-38 (at age 15 - was born 3 August 23) and ended up in Kodiak, Alaska, as part of a coastal artillery unit, before training at Logan, Utah, in 43 as an aircrewman in the airforce, after which he got into the 75th 290th company I for the rest of his military experience.

Look forward to hearing from some veterans and/or family of veterans with related experiences. Thanks. johnscotthaack@aol.com
