I am in the act of purchasing a new (to me) boat. I have it narrowed down to 2 Trojan Tri Cabins .
Both are 1971's but are very different. One is the style that is fairly common, the 36' with the lazarette (aft deck), but the other one is unlike any one I have seen before. The broker says it is either a '71or '72 but it has no serial # on the transom. It does not have the aft deck but is more like the Chris Craft Catalina that just has a foot of space before you take a step up to a cockpit area which is, because of no aft deck, 3' longer. Has anyone seen this model.
I plan on having a surveyor look at the boats but am wonderin if there is anything that I should look out for in this model that is a common issue. I heard that the decks are fairly prone to rot.
As far as I know, Tri-Cabins up to and including 76's all had a normal back deck. The configuration you describe was begun in 77 and on. It would have a short rear landing area and a very small door. More of an escape hatch actually. You should also check the thread on straight drives on this site as to wether this boat would have V drives or not. Some of the things to watch for are rotting of the walkarounds and cabin rooftop. On the 71 be very careful of the back wall leaking/rotting and the back deck rotting. You can access this through a hatch behind the back ladder. You will probably also want to obtain a mechanical check to ensure the drive train is in good order.
