Prop Experiment
I'm embarking on a experiment in propping! I've always suspected that Trojan propped the single screw boats wrong... I'm running a 14x9 rh prop on mine, and have never been totally happy with the performance. It just seems to slip terribly.

I've been reading the Penn Yann site, and those guys have stumbled upon a prop fix that seems almost too good to be true. Most PY's came equipped like the Trojans: 318 Chrysler/1:1 Velvet Drive/14x9 - 14x11 props. They've been running OJ four blade 13x12 & 13x13 ski boat props, and the performance increases are amazing. Double speeds, 50% increases in mileage and still turning the proper rpms (give or take a little). Now, I understand that they have tunnels, but can the difference be THAT much? Remember, these are heavy flybridge boats like ours, 23-26 foot in length.

So I bought a 13x13 OJ Legend yesterday. It's going on this weekend. I'll post the results Monday, hopefully.

I'm also adding a swim platform this weekend...

trojan 25 marlin
I have a 71 marlin 25 with a 454 magnum borge warner 1.9.1 trans. I am very interested in the prop my boat has an 18 X 22 seems extremly large 2 inch space between hull. one of the owners added a full keel. I have been contemplating removing the keel to increase speed.

Re: Prop Experiment
Well, the swim platform installation went great! But the prop was a flop! Too much pitch... wouldn't even get to 2400 rpm. On the bright side the low end grunt was promising. I'm going to take 3 inches off the pitch, and see where that puts me.

Prop experiment
How did the prop experiment go when you reduced pitch? I have a 1976 F-28 FB Sedan that like myself has gained a lot of weight over they years. It has twin Chrysler 318's that probably don't quite put out 225 hp any more also.
I run 14 x 11 x 1 props but cannot get anything over 2900 rpms, if that much. The funny thing is that at WOT, the engines are syncronized at 2850-2900 rpms.
I located a pair of 14 x 9 x 1 props on eBay but they haven't arrived yet. I am sure that the rpms will increase a little and maybe enough to get the engines up to their recommended rates. Even though the engines seem to run smoothly and well, I think they are gulping about 1.5 gallons per mile at the present range of 2800+ rpms. I was hoping your experiment was successful so maybe a smaller diameter prop with large pitch would use a little less gas. David W Rynders, Naples, FL drynders@earthlink.net
