RX7 axle seals
I tried searching but no luck for me, so I apologise if this has been covered.

I have a problem with leaking axles seals on my Series 1 RX7 and am wondering (a) if this is relatively common and (b) what people have done to fix the problem.

I've had three left rear seals go in about seven months.

I put the first one down to wear and tear. The second could have been an installation problem. Now the third seal has gone after only one hillclimb event and one Wakefield club day and I am wondering what is going on.

Before this third 'blow out' developed I had a new diff housing installed, replaced both axles with new Mazda items, had new bearings, machined discs, rebuilt calipers, and new Redline diff oil put it.

One theory we are working on is that the oil pressure is building up too much because of the volume of diff oil being used. The diff housing is not baffled, so it has been 'over filled'. I previously destroyed a ring and pinion due to diff oil apparently running away from the gears, which is why it is being 'over filled' now.

Solutions that have been offered to me so far include sourcing 'triple seals' (for a stronger seal) or installing a breather in the diff.

Any experiences and advice in this area would be great...

You will definitely need a breather. Run a hose up high and fit a plastic fuel filter to it. This will work a treat. As the pressure builds up it has to have somewhere to go and the only path is past the seals.

cheers

I think this is the same person who has put a thread up on AusRotary?

If not, yes, check your diff breather on top of the diff centre housing. Will more than likely be blocked!

Re: RX7 axle seals
Check your diff breather, mine was blocked and it caused a blown axle seal.

Will do, people. Thanks for the feedback (and Lukus...on both forums even!).
