Racial issues
A survey conducted in Britain showed an alarming rate of racism in the workplace. As the BBC reports:

"Almost one in four of the population (22%) have come across racism in the workplace - more than in any other area asked by the poll.

With 40% of black people saying they have witnessed racism in employment, this is double the figure for whites.

And 34% of blacks, and 29% of Asians, say they have personally experienced racial or religious discrimination at work.

One quarter of blacks also say they have observed racism in shops or the provision of other services, while one in ten (11%) saying they have experienced or seen racism in banking services. "

Perhaps Britain is no better when it comes to racism. The supposed multicultural society is seen as a haven by many immigrants. In terms of immigration apparently "Just 30% say it is beneficial, while 44% say it has damaged society and 26% didn't know."

Like in the USA, a country of tolerance was supposed to arise from the statue of liberty amidst the fasade of antagonism that petruded into the lives of racial groups. As it says on the statue "give me your hungry, your poor". Well it can be viewed as fundamentally rejected. Things are better than what they were, yet especially in Britain the masks of tolerance that many of us wear is a symbol of a society that has not adapted to change.

It has been argued that the negative attitudes to ethnic minorities can be related to the belief that they have not made a contribution to society. Everyone can make a contribution, yet we are impregnated with a tirade of topical propoganda aimed to vanquish the hopes of minorities who only hope was to live peacefully in a land of tolerance. It will be centuries before racism will be less heard off, but then again, u never know what could happen in this world. Personally like equality, racial acceptance is something that may never be acheived. Any thoughts?

Re: Racial issues
I have the unfortunate and quite fortunate position of being in a psych class with an african american woman teacher who is also a social worker. Having sen the worst of what culture can have to offer, her and her coworkers also of african american race and female, are the most bigoted people I have ever seen.
Being middle class, suburban, white, male, and straight (as far as anyone knows, and if you don't know, it's none of your buisness anyway) I am basically in her eyes, the enemy or worse yet, the devil.

Todays culture, rather than breeding tolarance, is breeding blame. We don't need to make repairations to people who have not suffered, everyones ancestors have seen injustice at some point. The goal should not be to start dragging everyone down to one level, where we can all be bigots against everyone, and all make excuses, but we should all just give up such petty @#%$, and start standing on our own two feet.

It's become practice to hire someone of ethnic or gender different from the white male whether they are more qualified for the job or not. It's the same with scholarships as well. Everyone is being pushed to meet a quota for diversity, as opposed to getting the best people for jobs and financial aid.

I am currently working 2 jobs to put myself through school, and my state is now talking about a repairation bill to grant full rides to african americans whether they've earned it or not. I'm monitarily no better off than alot of these individuals, yet because they have a darker skin tone, they get special treatment.

What I'm getting at, is I can see why racism still exists. When due to PC terms I have to use the term african american, but I'm called white, the playing field is not being made more even.

I'm not a racist, ask around, look at my social groups, my ex-gfs, I love or hate on a purely personal basis, something I learned by doing the opposite of what my redneck father does.
I grew up with bigotry, but I did not adopt it as my own way of dealing with things.

I am though, sick of being portrayed as the enemy. I am no better or worse than anyone else, unless I myself have worked to be so. Nothing has been handed to me, and I don't see handing undeserved opportunities over to people, regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual preferance, or otherwise, to be benificial either to the individual, the person being overlooked, or society as a whole.

That's my oppinions, agree if you like, if not, I'm open for debate.

Re: Racial issues
IMO, racism runs in every race. I had a friend at one time who swore he was not racist because he was not white. He use to sit and tell me how his "people" were wronged and that sorta thing. Trust me, we went rounds about it. The worst thing was when he would use the "N" word and yet if he heard someone else say it who was not african american he would literally go after them. The other thing I always use to point out to him was that I did not owe him anything, except the friendship I chose to offer.

I see racism almost daily at work. Example, 4 african american men walk into my office wendsday. I look up and smile at them(I am on the phone with another student), the other gal that saw them just looked and then looked at me. It was like she was scared to go help them. I said give me one minute here and the one guy said sure. They all then just smiled at each other knowing they got to the other gal. The thing is one of the men is the new football coach and now IMO there will always be some friction between them. When they left, she said to me I did not know he was a coach. I said would it have made a difference and went on with my work. It really bothers me she is in my office and has issues with anyone who is not white.

I also know where Ash is coming from. I know a guy who did not get into vet school because of a quota that had to be filled. So, even though his gpa was better he got turned down because of his race. I don't think the goverment or schools should be allowed to do that. A person is a person, not a race/color.

Re: Racial issues
This is another area where my belief in, and trust of, the existence of KARMA comes into play...

In KARMA, there is no "God", forever demanding that his bloated cosmic ass be reverently kissed, to the tune of dollars pouring into the collection plate.

!!! HALLELUYAH, brothers & sisters !!!
;)

It's all about treating others as YOU would have other people *treat* YOU.

I believe that if you *wrong*, or otherwise persecute & condemn any race of people, you WILL need to *re-incarnate*, or live a future life, AS a member of that same race, until your karmic debt is fully paid.

...to *walk a mile in their moccasins*, as it once was said...

Re: Racial issues
So essentially you have to suffer the discrimination and anguish they suffered in order to pay off your sins, so to speak? I would say that can be seen as a viscious circle Huge.

I mean, if people are discriminated now, wouldnt it follow, by your reasoning that the people suffering now are doing so because of what they did to others in another life? Or am I a complete moron whos got the wrong end of the stick?

Re: Racial issues
You're one of the LAST people that I would ever think of as a "moron", Insanedawg...

The concept of KARMA just isn't very familiar to you, I think.

It *isn't* that you HAVE to *suffer* the pain that THEY went thru.

In my belief, you would CHOOSE to *suffer* the pain that YOU directly *did* UNTO others.

It's not really a vicious circle, because everybody *isn't* FORCED to act like an A$$HOLE to you.....everything is done by FREE WILL CHOICE.....never by force.

And just because somebody is being wronged, doesn't mean that the people GIVING them pain aren't the ones beginning the process in the 1st place...

But I have to believe there is more of a chance that the people suffering NOW, were once guilty of causing pain to others...just as you suggested.

The thing is, if more people considered their wrongful actions as being returned to them, I honestly believe that less harm would be committed.

That has certainly been the case in MY life.

I used to be quite the arrogant b@st@rd. I didn't use to care WHO I hurt.

But NOW I honestly try to not hurt anybody.

Re: Hmm
"When they left, she said to me I did not know he was a coach. I said would it have made a difference and went on with my work."

Depends, if the black guy was in his thugged out attire I'd understand her position. If not, she was out of line IMO.

Anyway. With minorities, especially black people it seems, it's not about @#%$ equality. It's about the white person get the same or lesser treatment. At least in some fields. Take for example... The Miss BLACK America pageants. WTF is the point on this? Maybe I'm wrong, someone tell me if I am, but is there a Miss White America Pageant. If there was, you know damn well such a thing would cause an uproar. I, personally, don't find black females attractive 9 times out of 10. Do black people see this sort of mindset in most people and THINK that having a black only pageant will be the only route towards a black woman winning? (Haha, amusingly enough for their biased contest, I think a black woman won the pageant not too long ago)

And then you have these motherfuckers with their MY RACE WAS WRONGED @#%$. I wish people would look at themselves and their lives on an individual basis. Instead of grouping it up with their "ancestors" of past to make a huge gang of @#%$ out of something that would otherwise be nothing. I see people like this demeaning everything that their ancestors (slaves) so much wanted when they actually had a reason to be angry.

If they want to act like they've been wronged for ANYTHING other than what happens directly to them, friends or family, they should be wronged threefold.

Several good comments, Omicron. Welcome to TEF, by the way.

I really have to agree with you about the whole "BLACK this, BLACK that", thing not accomplishing anything worthwhile.

Instead of bringing everyboy *together* and encouraging acceptance/tolerance of each other's beliefs, it pushes all of us apart, by supporting our separation into different races.

Oh yeah, I wanted to just share my opinion on something Marie said.

" The worst thing was when he would use the "N" word and yet if he heard someone else say it who was not african american he would literally go after them. "

It seems hypocritical and much like a double standard, but what I think the case with this is...

The "white man" brought the word niggar/@#%$ into the mix as something insulting to call the black man. The white man gave it power (as a negative insult) to insult the black man. I think that nowadays the modern black person uses the word to demean that power, to almost laugh at how those days are now over. While a black person demotes the word's power, a white person using it empowers the word for what it was meant to stand for.

Though, I think this is subconscious in most black people that're ignorant. For some reason, I don't think black people that use "nigga" regularly in their words of choice have much of a thought process for things like that. It's just instictive.

Re: Hmm
I agree, Omicron....just like the old saying about presents goes, its the THOUGHT that counts...

When somebody uses the "N" word, like any other demeaning word, its both meant to hurt & taken that way...

On the other hand, ALL of my black friends are like, "Nigga this, nigga that" to each other....they say "nigga" like *I* say "Bro"...

I see your point guys and really for the most part that is what he would be doing. However, it got real annoying real fast then when someone who was not african american would come around and join in the convo. He would simply act like the guys in the "gang type" movies act, not like himself during those times.

I used to have a friend like that. He'd be a pretty cool guy when you were one on one with him, but say him and I were around a girl he had just met that he liked, and he'd try to put me down as a way to get himself "over."

I felt sorry for the guy, he was pretty pathetic so I let it slide. But then he'd do it when it was just other friends of ours around. It seemed the more people we were both around, the more ignorant he'd get. Needless to say, he's not my friend anymore.
