Random Ringside Ramblings
Not too much to say about Thursday LETDOWN, due to my being sick as hell, plus the show's increasing power of putting me immediately into a bored stupor & rendering me slighly unconscious before the end, but I'll start with the one thing I liked.

The HHH/later-joined-by-Edge promo was very well done, I thought. Real emotions seemed to be expressed, & HHH's character seemed very much in control, putting aside any conflict between he & Edge until later, to concentrate on defeating Angel & Jericho.

Still don't like Hurricane Helms's gimmick, but at least his chokeslam looked good and very punishing.

I was actually interested in seeing the scheduled swimsuit competition between Torrie & Stacy go off like it was "supposed to". Trish may be very popular with the fans, and she may have technically "won" the contest after Torrie's elimination by Tajiri, Stacy's non-participation, and Trish's run-in entry, but she looked like she'd put on quite a bit of weight to me. I still honestly prefer Torrie, & some of my friends prefer Stacy, so Trish's screwjob victory ruined our fun by robbing all of us of any bragging rights.

Incidently, I don't think that Tajiri's incapacity with the English language is doing this angle any favors, as far as its development goes. Torrie is pretty, for sure.

Pretty ditzy.

There's no real story, because no interesting mic-work is being done to develop the angle. Billy Kidman could help move things along if he's included as Torrie's former love interest in wCw, who still has a thing for her despite their past problems.

Kidman's character could use solidifying as a face, & the until-recently smiling lovesick clown Tajiri needs to be established as a heel, IMHO. Besides that, Kidman =vs= Tajiri makes for a good matchup.

Do we really need to see Rikishi dance? Talk about pro wrestling's finest hour.
*rolls eyes*

Lastly; how many minutes was Hulk Hogan just standing there in the middle of the ring, listening to the audience cheer for him?
:lol
Simply unbelievable.

Re: Slackdown.
Haven't seen SLACKDOWN. Get RAW almost immediately, but still have to rely on my brother to record SLACKDOWN, so I usually don't see it until a week later after we pick up the tape.

But I will say something you've touched upon, Tarl - and that's the WWE's total ignorance of any history of things which happened in WCW.

Just to use the nWo as the most basic example, but they never once referred to Paul Wight and Sean Waltman being original members.

Similarly, they never touch on any prior relationships and enmities established in WCW, which I think's been a savage mistake.

If they assimilated the feudal histories of WCW, then they'd open a whole load of new possibilities and evolve from the same boring crap they repeatedly serve us.

Re: Slackdown.
I think I like *your* SMACKDOWN parody name better, SILK. It sounds more alike, but yet it encompasses the same general attitude that the show seems to project.

I think the avoidance of even mentioning wCw's name is part of Vince's strategy. He still resents the fact that his beloved Federation was soundly beaten in the ratings for about 80 straight weeks, and HE'd not only like to forget it - he wants all of the fans to forget it. I see it as not only a form of revenge, but as a sort of security blanket, as well.

As you said...its too bad. The WWE won't spend time developing their wrestler's characters, but when they have wrestlers with complex histories, and various relationships between each other, already established by their previous work *with* each other, it goes to waste.
