RoadRunner Starters
I am trying to replace my starter on my '69 RR. It has a 383 with a 4-speed. I bought a new one at AutoZone. I installed it but the tail end of the starter is not fitting in the hole in the bellhousing so the pinion is not lining up and engaging the flywheel. Is it possible that my bell housing is for a 440? Should I use a rubber mallet and knock the starter into the whole? The old starter has a lot of wear on tail where it was rubbing against the bell housing. I am also missing a bolt on the bottom corner of the bellhousing which may be adding to the vibration. When I bought this car the flywheel used to grind a little when starting.
