Saharda introduction
I’m a 26-year-old Sumerian Recon from Iowa. I’ve been a Sumerian Reconstructionist for about 6 years now. Before that I was a general Mesopotamian. I was raised with Mesopotamian beliefs by my father who converted when I was young. I do not however claim to be a fam trad, as that is a dubious appellation at best and frankly two generations does not a tradition make. My grandfather is a protestant pastor, and my mothers father is a Rabbi.

I went to college for four years and obtained a BS in physics with a minor in art. Ironically the art has made me more money than the major, but those are the breaks. Some other academic interests of mine are Magic (the scholarly variety, I’ve done research into systems used for hundreds of years rather than the more recent Wiccan variety), religion (that goes without saying on this board but I also study several religions that aren’t Mesopotamian), psychology (I grew up in a family of psychologists), writing, and demonology (try studying Mesopotamia and not learning about “demons”).

I have not had much luck finding other Reconstructionists of my faith. Those that I have found are sadly pitiful. The last on line group I joined was run by a druid (yes you read that right) who was more interested in talking about terrorism by the Irish in England than talking about the Middle East at all. Before I departed from the board in utter disgust I endured a talking to about properly respecting the gods. (I didn’t call Enki “father Enki lord of illusions” in a post about how to show supplication before the gods.) I endured a speech that told the board that the Sumerians who practiced magic were not allowed to work directly with demons, and I had to sit through a speech saying that all Sumerian magic was in the form of prayers. The fact that none of this is actually true didn’t slow them down one iota. I have looked through this board to some extent and I quite enjoy the fact that it is good about its scholarly attitude.

I have a small group of students on the topic of Sumerian religion, and with luck I might get some of them to stop by here and give their two cents.

Any other questions simply ask.

Sumerian Magic
Hi, perhaps you could help me. I am looking for genuine Sumerian rituals of evocation and exorcism (of demons and other entities).

Do you have any or know where I could find such?

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Re: Sumerian Magic
I can give you some pointers, but I cast only in a style similar to the ancient Sumerians. The Babylonians used associative magic, while the magic that the Sumerians seem to have used is more like sympathetic magic. The best book I can recommend is the encyclopedia of gods demons and symbols by black and green.

I’m not sure if the board owners want to have me reply with magical advice on this board, but feel free to contact me off list.
