Seats
Hi,

Can someone please provide me with some direction on seats.
Do these actually have an expiry date??, and if so, where in the manual does this appear. I know that harnesses do, that is fine, just not sure about the seats.

cheers
Scott

Seats have various standards but you can't go wrong with one stamped with an FIA approval, although at the moment, this is NOT a requirement to compete in local (State-level) events.

Seats have a manufacturer's date on them (when they were made) but do not have an expiry date (a date at which they become obsolete/unusbale like seat belts.

Some seats also have ADR approval. The only requirement that comes to mind is that it has to be a fixed base and not a reclining mechanism.

Just been down this road with replacing the Gemini seat. For International events your seat must have an FIA approval. For National events like State Rounds, their is no official requirement other than the basics per the CAMS manual (fixed back, etc.), so you can use any seat as long as it is sturdy and mounted correctly. This includes seats approved by the ADR's.

Re: seats....
We have seat without hole for 5th belt, but have 5 point ahrness. want to fit 5th strap to prevent submarining in frontal impact by making small slit in seat squab. Is this allowed, given that the seats don;t seem to need any standard approval?

Re: seats....
The question you need to ask yourself is "Will this modification impact on the integrity of the seat?"

Look at it in the same way you would when considering drilling a hole in your roll cage, which is a definite "no-no".

If the structural integrity of the seat is not compromised then you might be okay but this is one I'd check with a scrutineer first.

I think you'll find most scruits wont notice it if you did it, in any case.

The question you need to ask though is whether saving a quid in the short term is worth a possible seat failure in the long run.

Exactly.

How much valuer do you place on your life? You should be able to pick up a reasonable seat from SPARCO, Corbeau or OMP or even VELO for under $500.

Re: seats....
A Velo Monaco (base model) is extremely comfy and reasonably supportive, and is a measly $400.
They look something like this: gallery2.plebeians.net/v/...1.JPG.html
