Of course, the people who have held slaves are dead (for the most part.. who knows about various pockets of the world), and I suppose the slaves in question are those ones which are also dead. Further, many reparations were made (we bought country for them in Africa, after all). But if you mean this junk about how white people (and, incidentally, succesful black people and other minorities) should give even more of their income to the base class of blacks, then no, I am entirely opposed, because they have never been enslaved and we have never had slaves.

reparations "I'm in favor." of slave reparations Hey Nukes , are you serious? Why should anyone get reparations for something that happened hundreds of years ago? How are you going to decide which blacks were decended from slaves? How are you going to determine which ones have had relations with whites? If you think US citizens should pay for reparations why stop there? Why not go back to Africa and ask for reparations from the very people(other blacks) that sold them to the whites in the first place? Why not go back to the Dutch who had an even bigger lock on the slave trade than the English? Why not continue with reparations for everyone like the Italians and Irish and just about every nationality in the world that at one time was held slave by someone else? Last but most important is this: Looking at Africa today does anyone in their right mind think that any Black today would be better off there than in the US today? If so then I would be in favor of giving them a ticket to Africa and a years average salary based the country of their choice. Any takers? |

Re: reparations Nuhere is absolutely correct, I wrote a big essay on this last year (my oldskool liberal U.S. History teacher didn't like it). Also note: There were over 3,000 black slave-owners in the Ante-Bellum U.S. All non-black americans would be paying for reparations - Japanese, Latinos... many other people who migrated here AFTER slavery was abolished.

Re: reparations Nuhere is correct, huh? Even though his entire post was aimed at rebutting an argument that wasn't even made? Even though he had to make something up (as usual; after all, it would be such an atrocity for him to ever respond to something real) to argue against? I said reparations are fine, except that the people involved are long since dead; if you assume that people today should handle the reparations (even if you are against them for other reasons), then you have already surpassed me in backing the idea of reparations, for you have brought them into the present. I said I was against reparations today, and since nuhere can't edit my post and change that, he's stuck opposing his own imagination. I sure wouldn't call that "absolutely correct," but I suppose I'm just going off of personal definition.
