Song of the Day
After a conversation with Heather, I decided to start this thread. It's a little different from normal trading. The idea is to add a song, probably not every day, but frequently, that isn't copyrighted, with a little story to go with it. I also promised Heather not to hotlink to Download servers, so as not to get her in trouble with EzBoard.
So here, is the first song. There is another artist I like, who I was reading a lot of reviews on, named Johnathan Rice. All the reviews were comparing him to some guy named John Mayer. Yes, this was 2005 and I had never heard of John. So, I searched some indie blogs, and Kid A kept coming up. All the indie hipsters couldn't believe that John had done such a great job with this Radiohead cover. It's very different from the original, and I think quite better. But, check it out for yourself.

You can hear the original to see how much different John's version is. You also get to watch some kid's film school attempts. He's got a typo in one of his first fade-ins. youtube.com/watch?v=7vFaoA7t2RE
And uhm, the official Radiohead web site is the strangest thing I've ever seen.

Eddie's Attic, only wish I could have been there
Yeah, Radiohead's a little whacked. I don't mind keeping the thread going for awhile, since I need to create JMc for my friends, which means sendspace links anyway.

Re: Song of the Day
I've got my track picked out... I just need to upload it. I actually heard it at Eddie's and nearly melted... Easily my favorite song and totally bummed that it never made an album.
Story time:
I'm from a small town... only science geeks, ornothologists and fellow New Mexicans have heard of it. Like many kids my age and in my situtation, I turned to MTV for my link to the musical world (non-classical that is... I was already a complete nerd in that realm). It wasn't until my freshman year in college when I first discovered that MTV was a sellout and there was loads of amazing music to be heard out in the world.
On of my suitemates was from Austin (the crazy girl whom I adore with all my being that set me up with all my own Texas stereotypes ), and since she grew up miles from ACL and SxSW she had an incredible library of music. A song that she played frequently was "No Such Thing." Keep in mind, I'd just graduated from high school... this tune really called out to me.
After a quick Napster search of "Welcome to the real world," I came up with John Mayer. Hmmm... ok. Downloaded the song and did another search of "John Mayer" and came up with all the tracks from Inside Wants Out, Room For Squares, and the songs that he recorded with LoFi (of course, I didn't know all that at the time). Since Napster was free and the university provided me with a super speedy download rate, I downloaded all of the songs. "Back to You" was an instant fav, as was "St. Patrick's Day,' but the track that I couldn't get enough of was "Outside in the Underground."
Maybe it was the fact that it begins in 6/8 and ends in 5/8, or it could have been the train noises... but looking back, I think the lyrics really hit home. My first year of college, I was constantly questioning whether I made the right choices-- should I have finished my application for USC? And if they had accepted me, would I have accepted them? Should I really major in music? "It all comes down to me... I've got a hundred lives, oh I've got to get it right." Pretty much sums up my life philosophy.
Hearing it at Eddie's was beyond amazing! I had just gone through a pretty rough patch and was starting to have a bit of self doubt again (eh, it comes and goes... comes with being a neurotic musician, I guess), but hearing this song again helped me regain the strength I needed.
PS. LOVE that rendition of Kid A-- I really enjoy Radiohead, though I've never checked out their site... I'm intriged. Edited by: capricieux83 at: 10/27/06 3:15 am
