Designing Your Character
Here's the basic breakdown of the Character profile:
Name: Characters name (and nickname in brackets)
Age: Characters age
House: Which house the character is in
Other: Any other things? (prefect? Or on the quidditch team?)
Description: What your character looks like. Include: Height (tall/short?) Build (thin/slender/big boned?) Hair (long/short? colour?) Eyes (colour?) Distinguishing marks (eg a scar?)
Personality: What is the character like? good temperment? friendly? outgoing? or shy? sporty? stubborn? reserved? argumentative? hot headed? a flirt? Loyal? Cares about people? Have any friends?
Likes: What your character likes
Dislikes: What your character doesnt like
Brief History: Bloodline (pure, half or muggle born? special bloodline?) Family (siblings? parents?) Upbringing (stable home life? Well educated? encouraged?)
If you're stuck for a character, there are several things to consider:
Realism
Create a realistic character. No blonde haired blue eyed loyal, ambitious, intelligent Gryffindors who can kick a$$ better than Buffy and can defeat Voldemort without breaking a sweat (or a fingernail) These characters are known as 'Mary-Sues' (or in the case of male characters 'Gary Stu's) and will not be accepted. You may have special abilities, but please use these sensibly.
Its much nicer to play a realistic character, and, fun to play a character that has a lot of your own traits. I dont mind if people use thier online persona in the RP, but i still want it to be realistic; no glossing over character flaws and having this perfect, stunning, well loved character...because they wont be well loved on this site.
Character flaws and quirks can be fun to work with. You may have a character who's pretty clumsy...but you can use this to accidently knock that Malfoy git over when you run into him. ^_~
Special Abilities
These can range from being good at a subject (Potions, runes etc) to having a specific power. You'll probably be a seventh year, so nothing too fancy im afraid....but things like control of flames, or ice.
Remember each will have a drawback, like, if you can bend flames to your will, you might not particularly like water (its the opposite element) AND the ability should link in with the characters history. If you're good at Care Of Magical Creatures, maybe its because you lived near a Magical Creature reserve.
Control of fire/flame: The character can take a flame and bend it to his/her will. (like Pyro, from X-men)
Control of Water: The character can control water. Perhaps s/he can move a puddle of water out of the way, or dump it over someones head. You wont have absolute control of water, especially not large things (no walking on water, no parting the sea etc) but you might manage a small raincloud over your head if you're in a bad mood
Good at healing: perhaps your character has a nack for healing...they'd be good at charms and potions, and take an interest in Herbology. They'd also be quite a caring character.
Dueling: Wizards duels are tough, so your chatacter would need a bit of agility (to dodge hexes) and to be good at charms/hexes/jinxes/curses. The character is likely to be charismatic and outgoing (bold enough to get into a duel in the first place)
Divination: Now we get to the tricky part. I dont mind having a character that can perhaps have flashes of visions...odd dreams that might show the past/present/future....however, i draw the line at having a full out 'seer' (see - er) its too unreal; they're in school, they cant fully understand or control thier powers, and no character can see and know all.
History
Where is your character from? (i dont want transfer students from other countries. It's not feasable...it gets messy, plus its simple enough for wizards and witches to travel from their original country back to where their parents now live. Draco was going to go to Durmstrang remember?) however, if you must have a foriegn wizard or witch then maybe they were born in another country then moved here when they were little. They can be bilingual, they can have been invited to attend a school in their own country, but chose hogwarts instead maybe.
Is the family Wizarding, Pure Blood or Muggle? (purebloods are hard to come by...theres probably only 10 completely pureblood families left in the UK at this point)
Any family quirks (such as clumsiness)? Inherited features (like good at potions, or simply having black hair)?
Bloodlines
Some wizarding families have strange bloodlines...
Veela blood: if you choose this, the veela blood has to be very weak. It will affect only your looks, and you will NOT have every boy at hogwarts under your spell!
Elven blood: perks include good eyesight and being very agile (good for quidditch). Usually short, thin and fair faced (same rules as with the veela - you will not have all the boys at hogwarts swarming over you just because you've got Elven blood)
Vampire Blood: if, somewhere along the line there happens to be a vampire in the family, your character may have good night vision, be quite agile and perhaps not particularly like being in the sun. It doesnt make you a vampire, and you dont feed off of students, but you have been affected a little (you might buy blood flavoured lolly-pops from Honeydukes).
The term for a half vamp is a Dhampir, if i remember correctly.
Goblin Blood: Interestingly, JKR has said Flitwick has Goblin blood...so, based on that, the character would be short and clever. They may be good with numbers, or have some goblin like looks (long thin nose, beady eyes) or even be quite cunning and snappy like the goblins in the book can be.
