Strange Problem(s)
I am currently running Windows XP Home Edition and have been for a while on this comp... I have a very strange\intriguing problem with it involving the internet, wmplayer(Windows Media Player) 1.0 [?] and dotcomtoolbar.com...
Basically, when I open wmplayer by way of a shortcut to a song file instead of opening the song file and wmplayer, it will try and access dotcomtoolbar.com... I've checked into the program files etc. and this is what I've come up with...
wmplayer is where the problem lies, the program that is. I've looked at the program using notepad and in there I've found where it says " (Originalfilename auto.exe) " and the ironic thing is that auto.exe is what runs instead of wmplayer when I try to listen to a song... So when auto.exe starts up instead of wmplayer.exe, that's what accesses dotcomtoolbar.com... (I would never go to that site by the way, this might happen to you if you try it...) Anyway, annoyingly enough, after I've figured all this out, Windows finally says, "Oops, this file isn't the right one.." And it wants me to enter the XP disc so that it can get the original files, unfortunately, the computer which I bought from a retail-store didn't come with the disc, so I'm stuck... And this is the part that sucks the most, (pardon the verb)...It's my dad's computer... Does anyone have any advice or a solution to this rather messed up situation? Thanks... (At least say something if you don't know so I know you got the message...) Please...if you have any questions\answers that may help, ask\tell away.... Thanks a million!
How To Remove DotComToolbar
The uninstall is not effective at removing DotComToolbar and neither are Spyware removers. The reason is that DotComToolbar modifies the browser "host" file that always takes the browser to DotComToolbar's page for reinstall if you successfully uninstall and think you are done (very sneaky snakes). So to really remove it:
2. Close any open browsers, then use Start>ControlPanel>Add/Remove Programs to uninstall DotComToolbar
3. Run your spyware program to really remove all their sneaky remnants.
4. BEFORE browsing anywhere (which will only reinstall DotComToolbar), you must find the "Host" file (correct, no ending such as host.txt or host.log, just "host"). In WindowsXP it is located in the following directory:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\
but if you cannot find it try searching your c: drive for anything that has the following letters in it:
"auto.search.msn.com"
without the quotes. These tricky devils even try to disguise themselves as Microsoft MSN.
5. Delete that "host" file and the problem is now resolved. If you are squirmish about deleting the host file, alternatively you may open it and remove the line that says:
213.222.11.11 auto.search.msn.com
which is what takes your browser to DotComToolbar's server and reinstalls their Spyware without your knowledge.
