Hello ladies, I was just wondering if any of you do tatting (shuttle or needle) and what kinds of items you make. My Great-Grandmother (who is 100, by the way!) showed me how to do shuttle tatting several years ago (even though she hadn't done it in a while and could barely see what she was doing!) and last year I finally caught on to the "flip" part of the stitch--at last--stitches that slide! I have made several cross bookmarks, a doily (with sz. 10 thread--normally I use sz. 70 or 80), a note card with tatted flowers, and have part of another doily started. I like the lacy look and feel like I am carrying the old craft on, since my Great-Grandmother did it. She also gave me most of her shuttles and thread (quite a few balls!) that she had. ~Hannah "And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." Luke 1:38 |

Hannah,
I have tried my hand at needle tatting. How wonderful that your great-grandma could teach you a truly wonderful skill, like tatting. You will always treasure that gift she gave you. My great-grandmother taught me how to quilt. I still remember that weekend I spent with her. She made me homemade chicken noodle soup and it was a cold wintery weekend. That was over 37 years ago and it still is such a precious memory. You can see her pic when she was young. She is on the banner of Genteelgirlhood...the young woman with the oversized hat. The one with the pink pin on it.Thank you for sharing your new found art. In Christ Jesus! Mrs Lyn |

Jenny, Yes, tat is the right word! I'm afraid I don't have lots of doilies for my hope chest. Tatting is quite time consuming for what you get, especially for large items, although the results are lovely. I do have a number of tatted doilies that my great-grandmother made, though!!! I don't know how she had such patience to keep at it! Tatting isn't really that hard, once you get the hang of it, which was my problem! And, from what I read, other people have the same problem (just for shuttle tatting). But, by all means--go for it! Here are few links that might help you--if you search on google you will find alot of other sites as well.www.gagechek.com/slb/index.html This is the site where I finally got the hang of how to shuttle tat. www.handyhandstatting.com/ This site has instructions (with pictures) on how to needle tat. Books from the library would also be a help. If I can help you in any other way, please let me know! That is very wonderful that you do weaving! I would love to have some woven placemats for my hope chest!!!How did you learn to weave, and what kind of loom do you have? God bless you! ~Hannah

Hannah, I learned to weave in a little hole-in-the-wall shop in our small town. I got lessons in exchange for our eggs. It was a good barter, and the lady that owned the shop was wonderful. We bacame quite good friends actually. Unfourtunally she got too busy, so I thanked her and went on my way. I didn;t want her to feel bad. She was only a store-owner. She even didn't offer lessons to the public, but she agreed to teach me. I will most definitly look at those web-sites. Thank you! God Bless, Blooming in His Care or Jenny |

Hannah, That is so neat that you were able to learn how to shuttle tat! How special to be taught by your Great-Grandma! I have always wanted to learn how to tat. I've heard quite a few remarks on how intimidating it looks. On the way to Hannibal, MO one day, years ago, I actually did teach myself how to do a few stitches. I look forward to being able to learn how to make something! My Great-Grandma used to shuttle tat a lot! My Grandma gave me my Great-Grandma's shuttle. It's really neat, because it is from her and it's made out of celluloid. (It looks like mother of pearl.) I've gone shopping for shuttles before, online. They have so many pretty ones available! The ones made out of shell are beautiful!! What type of shuttles do you have? Is there a favorite one you like to use? Thank you for the links! I look forward to visiting them! Blessings to you and have a wonderful weekend! In Jesus, Emilee Elizabeth |

Emilee, Thanks for your response! Sorry it’s taken me a while to write back! All of my shuttles are plastic, a few I got from my great-grandmother, but my favorite kind I buy from Jo-Anns and/or Michaels. They are small and have a little upturned point on one end, which is very helpful for joining stitches. I would like to get a wood one someday – they are more expensive though!! I'm not sure how long the doily took to make ![]() I believe the finished size was about 6” or so.
This is a cross bookmark that I made for a friend. The pattern can be found at:www.geocities.com/contessa_au/TatalltalesPatternIndex.html
Here are a couple links and I would also recommend checking your library for books and videos, which can be a great asset to learning. One good video that our library has is called “Tatting with Mildred Clark”. www.wcnet.org/~scwheels/ this site has some pretty vintage patterns and is actually has a page with the message of salvation! ![]() www.freepatterns.com this site has lots of free patterns in many categories (home, special occasion, clothing…) for all kinds of handwork such as knitting, crocheting, quilting, tatting, ect. You have to join (free), but it is worth it! They have nice pictures and you can print the instructions as well. Please don’t hesitate to ask me more questions!!! In Christ the King, Hannah ![]() |

Mrs. Lyn and Emilee, Thank you for your kind words and encouragement! You both are such a blessing!! The Lord deserves all the honor and glory, because He is the One who has given me the ability to do this! And much thanks to my dear brother—without him I wouldn’t have any pictures in my post. God bless you! In Christ the King, Hannah "And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." Luke 1:38 |

Trisha,
It’s nice to meet a fellow tatter! I would love to see some pictures of your bookmarks! What kinds of things do you use your edging for? I haven’t really done any edging, but there are some really pretty patterns out there! Have a blessed day in Jesus! ~Hannah |

Dear Hannah, O, dear! I am very, very sorry for not replying sooner to your post! Please forgive me! According to last report, our scanner is not working, so you will not be able to see pictures of my bookmarkers, but I can answer your question! My first edging project was to get better at tatting, so it is an ecru, size 10 thread, edging on the bottom of a flannel petticoat. That way, it is not seen, but still offered good practice time. God bless, ~Trisha~ |

I have to add something to the discussion of tatting.Mommy and I very much admire the art , but neither of us know how, although we have some beautiful pieces made by Daddy's great-grandmother.A few weeks ago Mommy found a book of patterns for knitted, tatted, and crocheted edgings on clearance sale at walmart for fifty cents! Welll . . . neither of us can knit either, but Ellen and I are learning to crochet, and of course we couldn't pass up on such an offerIn Christ, Emma |
