It'll be defeated, unless they attach it as a rider to a bill that's sure to pass. Everyone but the hardest religious right knows that mandatory sentencing for drug crimes is bad news.

So we're finally gonna have a system with built-in internets (GC had it but there were like 2 online games) but it wont support HD?
Dont they know FCC is gonna be pushing HD down our throats starting next year with a complete transition by 2009?

Jesus Fuck. The fact that they're running detention camps of illegal immigrants and threatening to pull tsunami relief for ONE WOMAN is just retarded. I wish to firebomb the whole country.

Re: Temporary news thread
Amusing. It's HARD to pass a constitutional amendment, and just as hard to repeal one, so opponents of this don't have much to worry about.
Truth be told, I think presidential term limits aren't half as helpful as draconian congressional term limits would be. Who wouldn't want Ted Kennedy to go away? A majority of people elected FDR to four terms, and nobody seems to mind that much.

Re: Temporary news thread
They can't do it, but they can do it. If they want to buy a new railway line or airport or highway and your house is in the middle, they can't just seize the land. So, they offer to buy it off you, generally for way less than its worth, I think. If you deny that, then they can take you to court over it. One way or another, they get the land.
I'm not 100% sure on this, I'l ask the realtors and get back.

Re: Temporary news thread
As it was explained to me elsewhere, the government has the power under the new ruling to tear down your house and give the land to anything that will yield them more tax revenue, be it a larger house that gives them bigger property taxes, or a business that feels your house is a great location to set up shop.
The existing owner gets paid, but far below fair market value, and doesn't have any choice to refuse that dollar amount.
However, future state laws can be made to add protections for certain types of seizure.
As a side note, under most circumstances, kicking people off of land wanted for new roads, airports, etc. has been done, but the owners had much more recourse. They are usually able (if they're smart) to turn down the government offer enough times that they can get an exorbitant dollar figure based on loss of quality of life if they have to move.
Re: Temporary news thread
Wrong. The way it is handled is as I said - you get offered fair market (kinda). Three appraisers go in, the average of those three appraisals is the offer. It is possible to counter and negotiate up for more money, though. If you refuse the offer entirely, then the courts go in etc.
The new law is essentially the same except yes, it now covers decrepid condemed property and the like. They still have to pay you FMV (or offer it to you). Eyesores in the neighborhood drop everyone's property value. I don't beleive that they can just wander into a maintained house or apartment building and knock it down, this law coveres 'abandoned' property, big chunks of vacant land that isnt being used for farming etc.
The realtors didn't seem too concerned over it yet.
Edit: Further discussions have revealed that yes, it is very broadly-defined and does allow private seizing, as it were. Barry isn't entirely sure but he doesn't think he likes it. It is, on its face, not a bad thing, but the potential for abuse is there. I doubt that it could be exploited (as there would be massive public uproar if they decided to knock down perfectly fine older homes for a new strip mall) but the fact that it isn't specifically prohibited will prolly ruffle feathers.

The AMD thing will be one to watch, that's for sure. I never thought of them as a lawsuit kind of company, but they apparently think they're strong enough to challenge the 500 pound gorilla now.
The Quake looks awesome, but im sure the phone it's being built for isnt cheap either.
Meanwhile the BFG looks puny. Not even the BFG from Doom 3 is that small. Not to mention the trigger looks cramped and painful.

Re: Temporary news thread
Yeah, Quake looks identical to the old PC version. I'm reserving judgement on a Doom movie, but I get the feeling the BFG's trigger isn't meant to be pulled that often.
