The Decemberists
They'll be in town Nov 16th... tomorrow I'm raiding the local ticket vendors since it doesn't appear as though this show was released to the online venders.
PS, their latest album is amazing!
I had to edit the crap out of this post... it was quite a bit longer. Edited by: capricieux83 at: 10/21/06 1:21 am
Okay, I've heard some things about them, but I trust your opinion more than that of random strangers.
What kind of sound do they have?
Who can you compare them to that I might know and/or like?
I really want to get ahold of their cd, I think another library in our system owns it.
But if I'm not going to like them, then I don't want to waste my time.

Re: The Decemberists
As a first time listener, I recommend their most recent album-- The Crane Wife. It's a tad bit more accessible than their earlier stuff (although Picaresque is the album that really got them beyond being a regional band).
The sound- acoustic guitar rock/ sometimes synthy/ not afraid to add an accordion if a song screams "I need an accordian lick!"
Who do they sound like? Well, at times they remind me of a slightly folked Snow Patrol (O Valencia, Crane Wife 3), other times I feel like I've been transported back to the late 60s/early 70s-- have a bit of the same vibe that The Shins made popular. If you like Belle and Sebastian, Clap your Hands Say Yeah and the overall genre of happy rock, you'll probably like them. I've been told they bare a resemblance to Neutral Milk Hotel, but I have yet to listen to them.
The closest comparison that I can think of wouldn't translate well, so I'll just broaden it slightly-- They're like the fun, up and coming local band that you go out to hear every weekend because you know they'll be the ones to break through and you hope they never sell out. Does that make sense?
So, main point: happy rock.
ETA: Some of the slow tracks are as beautiful as Damien Rice.Edited by: capricieux83 at: 10/22/06 3:09 pm
