The Master and Margarita
I thought I'd write a short review which might help to explain why The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov is my favourite book.

The book is about how the devil comes to Moscow accompanied by a naked woman, two demons and a large black cat by the name of Behemoth. He causes havoc and by the time he leaves the institutions of law and order are in tatters and the asylums are full. The only people left standing are an author called The Master and a woman named Margarita, lovers who are dedicated to the pursuit of truth.
It is a biting political satire supposed to be about Stalinist Russia, but the reader is swept away by dizzying narrative flights, surreal and slapstick humour and left with a feeling of satisfaction and rejuvenation. It is dark, poignant, hilarious and extremely entertaining. It was also the inspiration for the Stones' song 'Sympathy for the Devil'.
My favourite character by far is Behemoth, and my favourite scene is when Margarita flies naked out of the city to go and party with the devil.
It's a must for people who have an anarchic sense of humour, a vivid imagination and a taste for all things decadent and diabolical.
Please read it, you can get it in Waterstone's. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Then let me know what you think.

Re: The Master and Margarita
I can certainly reiterate what you have said regarding this book. It is excellent.

Bulgakov's 'Heart Of A Dog' is one I would also recommend.
