-----------------------------------

Jessica had just finished washing the dishes when she heard a knock on the door.
“Coming!” she yelled, walking to the door.
She opened the door to find her sister standing there with her arms wide open and a big grin on her face.
Jessica stared in shock, “Amy.”
“What no hug?” Amy said pretending to be hurt.
“Oh yea. Sure.” Jessica hugged her sister then stepped back, “What are you doing here?”
Amy pushed her way past Jessica, into the house.
“Well, to be honest I need a place to stay.” She walked into the living room and sat down on the sofa. “And seeing as you’ve got this big ‘ol house and plenty of room to spare, I figured you’d be more than happy to let me stay here.”
Jessica couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She tried to keep the annoyance out of her voice. “You want to live here?”
“Yep.” Amy pulled out a cigarette and prepared to light it. “I was living with this guy named Jacob but he turned out to be an ass. He just said one day ‘Get out of my house.’ He didn’t even let me get all my stuff.”
Eyeing the cigarette Jessica said, “Could you not smoke in here? We don’t allow it in the house because of the kids.”
“Oh yea, sure.” Amy said pulling the cigarette from her mouth. “So what do you say?”
“Well, I don’t think Dominic is going to like you staying here. Especially after what happened at the wedding.”
Amy waved her hands around like it was nothing. “Oh. That’s water under the bridge. He’s gonna love having me here. I’m his favorite sister-in-law.”
Jessica sighed, “You’re his only sister-in-law.”
“Yea but still.” Amy looked down at her small suitcase. “I don’t have much stuff with me and I can watch the kids while you and Dominic go out. That way y’all don’t have to hire a baby-sitter.”
Jessica gave Amy a skeptical look then sighed. “Fine, I’ll go ask Dominic if you can stay.”
Amy jumped up and hugged her. “Thank you so much! You’re the best sister.”
Rolling her eyes, Jessica muttered, “Yea, Yea, I know.”

Dominic was buttoning his jeans when Jessica walked into the bedroom. She noticed his hair was wet from the recent shower he had taken and she could smell the scent of his soap in the air.
“Guess who’s here.” She said watching him.
She laughed as Dominic nearly tripped when turning around at the sound of her voice.
“Jesus, Jessica! You scared the hell out of me.”
She choked back a laugh, “Sorry.”
He grinned at her. “Who’s here?”
“Amy.”
Dominic sat down on the bed, “Amy?”
“You know my sister?”
“The sister who nearly ruined our wedding?”
“Oh she didn’t nearly ruin it.”
“Like hell she didn’t! She came in drunk! I still can’t get over the fact that she totally ruined the wedding cake.” Dominic shook his head in disbelief. “Well why is she here?”
“She needs a place to stay and she wants to stay here.”
“I do not think so. She is not staying here. I won’t have it.”
“I don’t like it either but she’s my sister and I can’t just turn her away.”
“Yes you can. Tell her we have no vacancies.”
“Please Dominic. She won’t be here that long. The guy she was living with kicked her out of his house and now she has no place else to go.”
Dominic shook his head. “No. This is my house too and I will not have her around influencing my kids.”
Jessica walked over to the bed. She stood in front of him and pushed him back so that he was lying on the bed, propped up on his elbows. “I can’t convince you somehow?” She straddled him around the waist and leaned down to kiss him on the neck.
She murmured into his neck, “She said we won’t even know she’s here.”
“No.”
She began lifting his shirt up, watching him as he closed his eyes. She leaned down lower and kissed his chest, letting her tongue flick over his skin. “She also said that when we go out she will watch the kids so that we don’t have to keep bothering Billy to watch them.”
“You know, I really don’t like talking about your sister when you’ve got me in this position.”
She lifted her head and looked down into his eyes. “Come on, Dominic. What do you want? I’ll pay you.” She batted her eyelashes at him and he laughed.
“I don’t want your money, missy.” He lifted up and kissed her.
“Mmmmm. You’ve been in the kids blow pops again haven’t you?”
“No.” Dominic said giving her a little half grin.
“Yes you have. Don’t lie.” Jessica pinned her arms at Dominic’s sides. “Fine. What do you want, then?”
Dominic considered it for a moment. Before she knew what was happening he flipped her over so that she was lying on her back and he was on top of her.
“You know what I want.” He winked at her.
“You’re a horndog, you know that!” she said laughing.
“A horndog? Well that’s a new one.” He tugged on a strand of her hair. “Ok, she can stay. But she’s staying in the guesthouse and I don’t want her near our kids anymore than necessary.”
She leaned up and kissed him. “Great. Oh and you should eat the grape suckers more often. They taste great.” She winked at him and he grinned.
He started to lean down and kiss her but before he could she pushed him off her. Laughing, she crawled off the bed.
“Hey. What are you doing?” Dominic said in surprise.
“Well I can’t keep her waiting. I’ve got to let her know she can stay.”
Dominic muttered jokingly, “You’re nothing but a little tease you know that.”
She picked up a piece of paper and a pencil and scribbled something on it. When she was done she threw the piece of paper at Dominic. Dominic looked at the note. It read “IOU”. She turned from the room and walked out.
She heard him yelling after her, “Jessica! This is not fair! A man should not be tortured like this!”

Jessica was smiling when she got back to living room.
“What took you so long? I’ve been waiting for 10 minutes.” Amy said sounding a little annoyed.
“I had to wait for Dominic to finish his shower. Anyway, he said you can stay.”
“Great! Where will I be sleeping?”
“You’ll be sleeping in the guesthouse.”
“The guesthouse?”
“Yes, the guesthouse. Dominic thought you’d like more privacy.”
“Oh. Right.”
“Well just grab your stuff and I’ll take you out back.” Jessica began walking to the kitchen after Amy had picked up her suitcase and purse.
“We’ll eat dinner at 6:00.” Jessica said when they reached the kitchen. “You’ll meet Danae and Alex then.”
“I didn’t know you had kids. How old are they?”
“Danae is 4 and Alex is 7.”
“Where are they now?”
“They’re probably upstairs in the attic or down in the basement messing around in something.”
Jessica opened the door leading to the backyard and stepped outside. She closed the door when Amy was through it and led her to the guesthouse.

When she got back into the house and walked into the living room, Danae and Alex were running around the living room. She watched as Danae struggled to keep up with Alex’s longer legs.
Alex ran up to Jessica and crossed his arms in front of him. “Mamma! Tell Danae to quit following me everywhere.”
“Danae, quit following your brother.”
“But Mamma!” Danae said lifting her hands so her palms were showing, “Who else am I gonna play with?”
“Go find your dad and tell him to come down and help me prepare dinner.” Jessica said to Danae. “Alex, help me set the table. We have a dinner guest tonight.”
Both Danae and Alex jumped up. “A dinner guest? Who is it! Is it Uncle Billy?”
Jessica laughed at how much they adored Billy. Billy was the one guy besides Dominic that she could count on whenever she needed him.
“No it’s not Billy. It is your Aunt Amy.”
Alex and Danae looked confused. “Who is Aunt Amy?”
“Neither one of you have met her but tonight you will.” She said turning to walk back into the kitchen. “Danae do what I said and Alex come help me.”
She heard Alex mutter as he hurried after her, “I’d prefer Uncle Billy coming to dinner instead of Aunt Amy.”
So would I, she thought to herself.

“Kid’s come and eat!” Jessica yelled from the bottom of the stairs. “Dinner is ready.”
She stood there for a few moments and walked back to the kitchen.
“Dominic, go get Danae and Alex while I go and get Amy for dinner.”
“You mean she’s going to eat dinner with us?” Dominic groaned.
“Just until I get her some food set up in there. We can’t let her starve.”
“Wanna bet.” Dominic muttered.
Jessica hit him with the dishtowel playfully, “That’s not funny. Now go get the kids.”
“Fine, Fine. You owe me big time for this.” Dominic kissed Jessica and turned and shuffled out of the kitchen.

Jessica walked to the backdoor and started to open it but before she could the door swung open to reveal her sister standing there.
“The guesthouse is great. I love it. So, what are we having for dinner?”
Jessica stepped back and let her sister in, “Italian Chicken.”
Amy rubbed her hands together and grinned, “Sounds good.”
At that moment Dominic walked in with Danae and Alex. Alex saw Amy first and looked up at her. “Who are you?” he asked.
Amy stared at Danae and Alex, “I’m Amy, your aunt.”
“Kids, your aunt is going to be staying with us for a little while.”
“Why?” Alex asked, clearly annoyed that it wasn’t his favorite “Uncle” standing there.
Jessica saw Dominic try to suppress a laugh.
Giving Dominic an angry look, Jessica said, “Never mind why. Just say hello to your aunt and sit down at the table.”
“Hello.” Both kids said in unison. They gave Amy a suspicious look, walked over to the table and sat down.

“The dinner was great.” Amy said walking back to the guesthouse beside Jessica.
“I’m glad you liked it.”
“Ummm… Jess?”
“What?” Jessica asked looking at her sister.
“How come your kids look nothing like Dominic? They both have black hair and green eyes, while Dominic has gray eyes and brown hair” Amy looked at her sister and gave her a confused look. “You didn’t fool around on Dominic, did you?”
Jessica laughed. “Of course not. Danae and Alex are adopted.”
Still confused Amy replied, “Adopted?”
“Yes adopted.” Jessica sighed. “Dominic and I couldn’t have kids of our own so we adopted Danae and Alex. We were going to just adopt Alex but we found out he had a sister, Danae, so we adopted her too.”
Amy laughed, “Well I wasn’t going to mention it but that would explain why they don’t look like you either.”

Jessica was standing under the hot water in the shower when she heard the shower door open. Turning around she saw Dominic standing in the entrance with a towel wrapped around his waist. He looked up and down at her body appreciatively.
Jessica looked at Dominic with laughter in her eyes, “What exactly do you think you’re doing, mister?”
He gave her a cheeky grin, “I plan to take a shower.”
“Not with me you aren’t.” she reached up to close the shower door but before she could close it Dominic grabbed her around the waist and kissed her. “Mmmmm… Grape.”
Dropping the towel that was around his waist he lightly pushed her further back into the shower and closed the door.
“Remember. You owe me.” He grinned sexily at her. “It’s time to pay your debt.”
Grinning, Jessica threw her arms around his neck and kissed him.

**
3 weeks later
Jessica opened the back door and yelled outside, “Kids! Lunch!”
“Coming, Mom!” she heard Alex yell back.
Danae and Alex came running through the door. Jessica stared at them in shock. Alex was in bright purple genie pants and had an eye patch over his left eye. Danae had her hair up in 4 or 5 messy pigtails and was wearing something similar to what Alex had on except her pants were metallic pink and she had a top on to match.
“Where on earth did you get those clothes?” she said trying not to laugh.
“Aunt Amy bought them for us.” Alex said grabbing a sandwich. “She said we needed more color in our wardrobe.”
Danae twirled around, “Don’t you like it?”
“Yes, it’s lovely.”
At that moment Dominic walked into the kitchen. She closed her eyes at the sound of a plate shattering to the floor.
“My kids.” He walked over and picked Danae up. “What has your mother done to you?”
Danae started slapping Dominic’s hands away from her in an attempt to free herself. “Bad boy! Put me down.”
“Mom didn’t do this. It was Aunt Amy. She gave us these clothes.” Alex said taking a bite from his sandwich.
Dominic looked at his youngest child, “Bad boy?”
“Yes very bad boy! Put me down!” Danae began kicking her legs and screaming.
Dominic then looked at Jessica and mouthed, “Upstairs now!” He put Danae down. “Kids, go run outside and make sure to stay away from the neighbors. God forbid they see you like this.” Dominic shook his head, turned around and walked into the living room.

Jessica followed Dominic up the stairs and into their bedroom.
Dominic shut the door and turned around, “She’s got to go.”
“Why? The kids love her.”
Dominic looked at Jessica like she was the craziest person in the world. “Why? Can’t you see why?! She’s got our kids looking like MC Hammer and Danae calling me bad boy.”
“You don’t honestly believe that was Amy’s idea do you?”
“I wouldn’t put it past her.” Dominic said giving her a sideways look. “Anyway, that’s not the point. She’s been here for three weeks. You would think that she would have found at least a job by now.”
“She’s been looking. She just can’t seem to find anything she likes.”
“No, that’s not it. She just wants a fucking free ride. Well guess what, we’re not the one’s going to give it to her!” Dominic said raising his voice.
Jessica started to get angry, “But Dominic, she’s my sister.”
“I don’t care if she is your damn sister.”
“What is your problem? You’re being an asshole.”
At that moment the doorbell rang.
Glaring Dominic opened the bedroom door, “We’ll finish this later.”
“Oh you can bet your ass we will.”
Jessica pushed past Dominic and rushed down the stairs to the front door. Opening the door she found Billy shielding his eyes from the sun.
“Billy!” she pulled Billy into the house and gave him a hug. “What brings you here? And how was your trip?”
“The trip was great. I just thought I’d stop by to see how you, Dom, and the kids were doing.”
“Oh, well the kids are outside with their Aunt Amy.”
“Amy? You mean your sister that nearly ruined yours and Dom’s wedding?” Billy said with laughter in his voice.
“That’s the one.”
“That’s great.” Billy said laughing. “So where’s Dom.”
“Well Dom is upsta…” Before Jessica could finish, Dom angrily cut in.
“No I’m right here.”
“Did I come at a bad time?” Billy said turning back towards the door.
“No not at all.” Jessica said. “Come into the kitchen and have some tea.” Jessica turned and walked into the living room.
Billy looked at Dominic in confusion then followed Jessica, “That’d be great.”

Jessica was filling Billy’s cup with tea when the kids came barreling through the door.
“Billy!!” They both screamed in happiness.
Billy stood up and swooped both Danae and Alex into a hug.
“How are my favorite two munchkins?” Billy teased.
“We’re great, Uncle Billy.”
Billy put the kids down, “That’s wonderful!”
Danae looked at Billy angrily, “Where’s our presents?”
“Man. I knew I forgot something. I’ll have to bring them by tomorrow. Will that be ok?”
“I guess.” Danae said still not looking happy.
“That’d be fine. Kids go outside and play.” Jessica said putting a teacup on the table.
Billy ruffled Alex’s hair as the little boy turned to run outside.
Billy looked at Jessica, “What’s with the clothes?”
“Amy bought them for the kids. I think they look adorable. Dom doesn’t seem to think so though. Dom saw the clothes and ordered her to leave.”
“It’s not the clothes that’s the problem, Jessica.” Dominic said from the entrance to the kitchen. “It’s the fact that your sister has been nothing but freeloading off of us the entire time she’s been here.”
Dominic sat down at the table.
“You know good and well that’s not true.”
“Like hell it isn’t.”
Jessica raised her voice up a notch. “Dominic we have a guest. I would appreciate it if you would not speak about my sister like that in front of them. You’re only making an ass of yourself.”
“I’ll show you who’s making an ass of themselves.” Dominic stood up from the table, knocking his chair over in the process and headed towards the backdoor.
“Dominic what are you doing?”
“I’m telling her to get out.”
“You can’t do that!” Jessica said following him. “Dominic!”
Dominic stopped in front of the kids, “Danae. Alex. Go inside with Billy. I need to talk to your aunt.”
“Dominic, do you really think this is the best way to handle the situation?” Billy said from somewhere behind Jessica.
“This doesn’t concern you Billy.” Dominic muttered.
“I know but…”
Dominic cut Billy off, “I said this doesn’t concern you. Now will you please go inside with the kids.”
Billy turned around angrily and followed the kids inside. Jessica watched as Dominic went up to the door of the guesthouse and banged on it loudly.

Amy appeared in the doorway a few moments, “Yea?”
“You need to pack your stuff and get out.”
“What?” Amy looked at Jessica in confusion. Jessica shrugged her shoulders and looked down.
“Why?”
“You’ve outworn your welcome. We would like you to leave.”
Jessica looked up angrily. “We? We don’t have anything to do with it. You’re the one who got pissed off for no reason at all and you’re the one wanting her to leave. So don’t you dare bring my name into it.”
Tears formed at the corner of Amy’s eyes, “Fine, if you that’s what you want. I’ll go. Just let me pack my stuff. I still don’t understand though.”
“Neither do I.” Jessica said pushing past Dominic. “Here let me help you pack.”
Jessica and Amy walked into the bedroom of the guesthouse and Amy pulled her suitcase from the closet and began piling clothes into it.
“I don’t know where I’m going to go. I have no money at all. All the jobs I’ve applied for never called me back.”
Jessica looked at her sister sympathetically, “I’ll give you some money to get started. I’ll also talk to some people I know and see if I can get you a job.”
“Thanks Jessica. You’ve always been such a great sister.” Amy hugged Jessica and picked up her suitcase. She used the phone in the small living room to call for a cab. “Well I guess I should get out there. The cab will be here soon.”
“The sooner the better.” Jessica heard Dominic mutter. She shot him a cold look and hugged her sister, sticking several bills into her pocket.
“Call me, ok?” Jessica said wiping the tears from her eyes.
Amy nodded and walked out the front door.

“What the hell is your problem?” Jessica said turning on Dominic.
“I don’t have one. What’s yours?” Dominic bit out.
Jessica steadied her voice, “I don’t know what your damn problem is or why you are being a complete jackass but you really need to stop.” Jessica turned and walked out the front door of the guesthouse and across the backyard.
When she was in the house she slammed the back door shut and walked into the living room. She heard the door slam back open and Dominic came rushing past her.
“Dominic, where are you going?” He ignored her. “Dominic, where are you going?” she repeated, louder this time.
“I’m going out! Is that ok?” He shouted as he bolted up the stairs.
“Well I hope you aren’t planning to go out that way. The front door is down here.” She replied sarcastically.
“HaHa. Very funny. I’m just getting my wallet.” He came back down the stairs and stormed out the front door.

She turned around and saw Billy standing in the entrance of the television room, staring at her.
“You alright?” He asked with a concerned look on his face.
Jessica wiped a tear from her cheek and looked down, “Yea, I’m fine.”
“Is Dom ok?” he asked walking over to her.
“I don’t know if he’s ok or not. I don’t know what’s wrong with him. I’ve never seen him act like this. I don’t even know why he kicked my sister out the guesthouse.”
Billy put his arm around Jessica, “I think you need to talk to your kids. They’re probably a little worried.”
“You’re right.” Jessica wiped the last tears from her eyes and walked into the television room.

Later that night Jessica was sitting on the couch talking to Billy when the phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Hi. We need to talk to someone concerning Dominic Monaghan.” Replied the person on the other end.
“I’m his wife. What’s this about?”
“Well ma’m we’re sorry to inform you but your husband has been in an accident, and we need you to come down to the hospital.”
“Ok.”
Jessica sat numbly staring at the phone.
“What’s the matter?” Billy asked.
“Dominic’s been in an accident. I have to go down to the hospital.”
“What kind of accident? Is he hurt?” Billy asked with alarm.
“I don’t know. They didn’t tell me.”
“Well I’m going with you to the hospital.” Billy said standing up.
“No. Could you stay here with Danae and Alex? I’ll be back soon.”

At the hospital Jessica asked the women at the front desk for the floor number Dominic was on. When she had gotten the information she stepped into the elevator and rode up.
She walked down the corridor until she found a nurses’ station and asked the woman there for Dominic’s room number. A nurse standing near by heard her and notified a doctor nearby.
“Are you Mrs. Monaghan?” the doctor asked as he walked up to her.
“Yes.”
“I’m Dr. Wilkes.” He said extending his hand.
“Can you tell me where my husband is?”
“You can’t see him right now. But, I do need to talk to you about some things. Would you mind sitting down?”
Jessica walked over to a couple of chairs that were pushed against a wall.
“What is it you need to speak to me about?” she asked, sitting down.
“Well, Mrs. Monaghan. I’m sorry to inform you but your husband suffered substantial injuries in the car accident.”
“Car accident?” she asked bewildered.
“Yes. It appears he may have been drunk and he lost control of his car.”
“Is he ok?” asked in shock.
“Well he suffered a concussion and he went into a coma as soon as he was brought in.”
Jessica choked back the tears. “Is he..” Jessica coughed. “Is he going to wake up?”
“As of right now we don’t really know. We’re not even sure he’s going to make it because of the extent of the injuries.”
“Oh God. No!” she covered her face with her hands and cried.
“Mrs. Monaghan, we need you to sign these papers so we can continue to do whatever work that needs to be done on him.” The doctor said handing her a clipboard.
Jessica wiped the tears from her eyes and grabbed the clipboard and pen from Dr. Wilkes hands. “Where do I sign?”
He pointed at a line on the paper, “Right here.”
Jessica quickly signed her name and the doctor got up to walk away.
“Dr. Wilkes?”
“Yes?”
“Did my husband say anything before he went into the coma?”
“Actually he did. The paramedics said they heard him mutter the words ‘I’m sorry’.”
Jessica nodded, “Thanks.”
Crying, Jessica got up from the chair and went to the pay phone hanging on the wall.

“Hello? Jessica?” she heard on the other end.
“Yea it’s me.”
“How’s Dom. Is he going to be ok?”
Jessica took a shaky breath. “I’ll explain it all to you when I come by. I’m coming to pick up some stuff for Dominic.”
“Ok. Well see you then.”
“K. Bye.”
She hung up the phone and walked over to the nurses’ station.
“If there are any changes in my husbands condition before I get back will you please give me a call?” She wrote her name and number on a sheet of paper and handed it to the nurse. “Thanks.”

She walked into the quiet house and through the living room to the kitchen. She found Billy sitting at the table with a cup of tea and his head down on the table. He turned around at the sound of her footsteps.
“Is he ok?”
She began sobbing uncontrollably.
“Oh my god, Billy. He’s in a coma.” She took a shaky breath. “He apparently went drinking after our fight and after he was through he got into his car. While on the road the doctor said he must’ve lost control of the car.”
Jessica walked over to the counter and put her arm on it to support herself. Screaming in anguish she swung her arm and knocked the clear drinking glasses off the counter, sending them crashing to the floor.
“Jessica!” Billy cried out in alarm, his eyes were wide with shock.
“Billy, what the hell am I going to do if Dominic dies? Huh?!”
Jessica slumped to the floor in the middle of the broken glass. She wrapped her arms around her knees and cried.
Billy walked over to her and sat down next to her. He wrapped her in his arms.
“He’s not going to die”, Billy said quietly.
“But what happens if he does? What the hell am I supposed to tell Danae and Alex when they ask where their father is?”
Billy’s voice shook with emotion, “You tell them the truth. Tell them that things happen that you have no control over. Things like death happen at unexpected moments and nothing you say or do can change the fact. Explain to them that it was Dominic’s time and no one could have stopped it. Let them know he’s in a better place now and that nothing will ever harm him again.”
Jessica looked up and saw tears running down Billy’s face. She lifted her arms and threw them around Billy and cried.

The phone started ringing above their heads. Jessica lifted herself off the floor and picked up the phone.
She fought to keep the sadness from her voice, “Hello?”
“Mrs. Monaghan. It’s the hospital. Your husband has awoken and he is asking for you.” The nurse said hurridly.
Jessica started crying again from happiness, “I’ll be right there. Tell him I’ll be right there.” She threw the phone down. “Billy! He’s awake! I’m going to the hospital. Can you stay here with the kids? I’ll call you from there, ok?”
Billy hugged Jessica, “Sure, be careful.”

Rushing into the hospital, Jessica took the elevator to Dominic’s floor.
“I need my husband’s room number!”
“Room 604.”
Jessica ran to the door and threw it open. Dominic was lying down in the bed with a bandage wrapped around his head.
“Dominic.” She whispered
He turned his head slightly and looked at her, “Jessica.” He said weakly.
She pulled a chair up to the bed. “Me and Billy have been worried about you. I’m so sorry for making you run out.”
Jessica saw a tear in Dominic’s eye, “No, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have lost my temper like that. I don’t know what came over me.” He coughed. “Mid-life crisis or something I suppose.” He laughed softly. “Can you ever forgive me?”
Jessica stared in love at Dominic. She thought about how she had almost lost him tonight and about how much she loved him.
“Of course.” She whispered and took his hand.
