Tranny problems/advice needed.
First, i don't know much about rebuilding a tranny.
I bought a 727 from a guy and here is what he said is in it.
Heavy duty clutch drums w/extra clutch discs, Gil Younger trans reprogramming kit.
I also have a 3500 stall converter for it also.
heres the question, he said the snap ring, that retains the top pressure plate in high and reverse drum
(direct clutch), has popped out. what causes this?? This has been a reoccuring problem.
I'm going to take it to a tranny shop to be fixed but I would like to know how big an issue this is and
what you know about and think of the Gil younger reprogramming kit.
Also, this tranny was built in the late eighties or early 90's, very low miles on it about 1,000. When it
works, its great. I rode in the rr it came out of, pretty awesome.
Shouldn't be that big of a deal as you are having a trans shop do it anyway. Why it's a problem that keeps happening,is what I'd be concerned with as that's not a normal thing with a TorqueFlite. The Gil Younger kit is actually "Trans-Go".Gil Younger is the owner of that company.Trans-Go stuff is good.Next time, think about rebuilding your own TorqueFlite,it's a very easy trans to work on.
Re: Tranny problems/advice needed.
The snap ring popping out is not a common problem. Two possibilities, if the drum was originally a 3 clutch drum and someone machined a new snap ring groove for additional plates, the groove wasn't properly cut or, possibility 2, the drum still has the wavy snap ring that was used from '71-on. Replace it with a rigid snap ring.
