Ubers
I've been thoroughly enjoyed by reading the ubers that have been written while I was gone. I especially liked Knight Falls and the one Odon wrote (I'm not sure on the name of that one) And off course Finding Evil, which is one of my favs.
Now my question would be, what kind of setting you think is the best for a T/7 Story.
For example: Fantasy, Science Fiction, Medieval, Horror.
I based WildCard on a video-game. And I know Finding Evil was inspired by Resident Evil (which also happened to be game) I'm positive Knight Falls was inspired by A Knight's Tale, so that makes me wonder do writers believe that is the easiest way to write an uber?
I know that there was an uber featuring Pirates that didn't actually seemed directly inspired by something, and perhaps that's why it was never finished. And then there was Words Mean Nothing.
Ehm rambling, I'm just wondering on people's oppinions on Ubers. Strangely enough besides for the story about bicycling there doesn't seem to be an uber around dealing with modern-day happenings.
Now that Deus Ex 2 is coming out, I wonder if it's worth it writing a WildCard 2
In answer to your question, people tend to write ubers in areas in which they are interested. 'The Artisans of War' was written because war fics, notably the sci-fi/war stories of David Gerrold (War against the Chtorr) and Peter Hamilton (the Night's Dawn and Greg Mandel trilogies). BT wrote ‘Sword Lillies’ in response to a challenge by Silverheart, but it was because she was interested in Japanese history as well.
Re: Other interests
Yeah you're right about that. I know that WildCard was inspired by my own love for cyberpunk, or well Deus Ex in general.
But I'm at a loss where my ideas to write Requiem came from
As for artisans of war *bows* That was an excellent read, should make a sequel someday *g*

Hm. What about "Reflections" ? "Just a ghost in the machine"? "Victim or Victrix"? I think those /are/ dealing with modern-day happenings.
About adapting a plot... I think it's easier, at least for a first uber, to adapt an already existing plot. One can concentrate on developing the characters (ESSENTIAL for a uber - the reader wants to recognize them!) and their interactions, the surroundings... when the main plot is given and you don't have to worry about 'where to take them'.
Personally I like Ubers - when they have a plot, some action and the characterization is reasonable. Oh, and I /need/ to be able to recognize what and who it's based on.
K.
PS: Before someone asks:
The continuation of "Reflections" by Cortney is unlikely atm.
The next part of "JAGITM" is on its way
Hm, I don't know what Rachel's up to, but I think "V&V" /will/ be continued... on day (it's not as if we germans didn't have anything carnivorous to hunt down delinquent writers...)

Erm, yes V & V will be finished, but I plan to finish off Appreciating Paris first - sometime in the next fortnight
And to my knowledge Xakana once wrote a story called Ghost in the Machine *I think*
And nope haven't read that either, or the other one you mentioned *g*
I think that one with the pirates was the first uber on the list, don't remember the name or who wrote it, I do believe it was never finished
I'm working on and off on a Uber based on Dungeon Siege (a game) and perhaps inspired by some other fantasy stuff...Not posting anything till I'm done, I've learned from previous mistakes
I better go read Ralst's uber now so I can nag her to finish it *evil cackle*

Re: Ubers
"Just a Ghost in the Machine" by TJ - top Uber with references to recent events in the world.
"The Golden Age" by Magenter - Pirate-Uber. Unfinished.
Re: Ubers
I ment that there was another story (I thought) that was also titled a ghost in the machine, but I'm not sure, tho I will certainly read the Uber...whenever I find the time
How about this for an uber...
The crew of the commercial space tug Nostromo are awakened from hypersleep by a mysterious distress signal transmitted from a nearby planet. Landing on the inhospitable world, they discover a strange alien vessel shaped like an enormous coffee spoon. Ship's navigator Annika Hansen penetrates the vessel and is promptly attacked by an aggressive alien 'facehugger', a torrid half-Klingon who wraps her thighs in an unbreakable grip around the hapless navigator's face. An attempt to surgically remove the creature fails when it is revealed that the alien has fire in her veins – an extreme danger given the oxygen rich atmosphere of the spaceship. But after several hours the alien appears to detach of its own accord, leaving both itself and Annika sweaty and flustered, but strangely content. However a new crisis occurs when the ship's computer auto-activates the Emergency Homophobic Hologram, an artificial intelligence created by the Company (once known as Paramount). The EHH declares that the alien is a creature known as a ‘lesbian’ and a threat to all life on Earth! Despite her doubts Annika joins the crew in hunting down the alien whilst dressed in a sweaty tank top and packing an extremely heavy assault rifle/grenade launcher/flamethrower combination. One by one the women on the ship are captured and eaten by the voracious redheaded alien lesbian. But is the EHH telling the truth about the threat the alien presents to Earth, or is there more to the story than the Company will admit?
