VAFC with blue box at the same time???
i want to get a VAFC instead of using the blue box fuel maps. i have a few questions though...can i use the wires on the blue box to fool the map sensor instead of buying a missing link and just leave off the other wires?? can a VAFC be used on top of the blue box?? can i use my stock injectors with a VAFC and still supply enough fuel for boost...basically will the +50% max adjustment on the VAFC be enough to supply plenty of fuel with stock injectors to boost up to 8psi??
either or....
i have tried all the basic combo so far:
1) i have done the "VAFC hack" before it was called a hack. the problem i encountered was tuning the daym VAFC. i was clueless at the time.
2) Then i hooked up the blue box with the VAFC. it ran better but my gas mileage shot to hell!....again, i think it was my VAFC tuning abilities.
3) i did it with just the blue box and still burn too much gas with no recognizable difference in power.
4) now, i'm running the vortech FMU 12:1 with the VAFC and map check valves. i'm still running rich but better gas mileage. i plan to learn more about the "hack" and maybe try it once i get new injectors.
you can run any combination for fuel enrichment. just be careful not to be "boost happy" cuz the injectors may not be able to give more fuel. the bottom line is to question whether or NOT your injectors will flow on the setting.
Re: heh
You'll be fine just running the blue box if you don't plan on going over 8psi. I've ran 10psi with no fuel problems. If you want to get the VAFC, get bigger injectors or you're just wasting your money. The stock injectors were only meant to put out so much fuel efficiently. If you push them to far, they're gonna fail on you eventually. The reason why people use so much gas with the blue box is because it's given wide fuel enrichment parameters so that Greddy can "guarantee" you won't smoke a piston or something, but it's only good for so many psi. The VAFC is meant for fine tuning your fuel delivery. Running right in the middle between rich and lean is where your engine will make the most power, but running lean just once at high boost can melt a hole in your piston. Lots of people detonate at lower boost, but the one's who fry their engine are the ones who don't let their foot of the gas once they start to detonate. It's a common sense issue. The only way to make sure that your fuel/air mixture is correct is to invest some cash in either some dyno time w/wideband O2 sensor or purchase a wideband O2 sensor and EGT. I believe the EGT is a waste without an accureate O2 sensor, but both of them will cost you. That takes me to an earlier point, go to a dyno with a wideband O2 setup available.
Uhhh...
yeah sorry, but I'm just getting down to trying to turbo my D16 with one of those swanky looking GReddy kits, but what the freak is a blue box?
Re: Uhhh...
Theres a blue box so we call it the blue box.. :p
The blue box is a piggy back ecu controler that Greddy supplies with there turbo kits for the 92-95ex's. I think the other kits come with one to not sure..
But it controls fuel, retards timing, and hides boost from map sensor.
and is good to 8psi max.
the box is about the size of your ecu..
and you just tap into the wires on your ecu.. a light blinks letting you know its working.. and thats it :)
Re: Uhhh...
I forgot to mention that some shops have successfully used the blue box and V-AFC together. Most of the time it works, but sometimes they give each other problems. In that case, drop the box and keep the V-AFC and install a missing link.

i run the hack set up and boost 12 psi easly with now detonation and have great gas milage i get 28mpg. i have the rc 440 and the vfac and a intank pump
