Vacuum Amplifier For EGR
'74 California Satellite with 318 won't pass smog check because the vacuum amplifier won't activate the EGR. It passed the emmisions levels flying colors but it won't pass the final because of the EGR.

Am I correct that the vacuum amp. restricts the vacuum to the EGR at idle and is suppose to provide the needed vacuum to open the EGR at higher RPMs?

I've tried three other VAs from the bone yard and can't get a single one to give me vacuum at high RPM. What is the correct test? I can put vacuum to the EGR from another source and it opens fine so the EGR is not the problem. I've checked the VAs right at their own nipples to eliminate faulty vacuum lines and nothing. There is plenty of manifold vacuum reaching the VA and I've even checked the manifold vacuum itself with the throttle open.

Have I just gotten four bad vacuum amplfiers or am I going about this wrong?

Re: Vacuum Amplifier For EGR
Thanks for the welcome, some car guy!

I went to a smog shop today and looked through their books. There is a timing curcuit that activates a vacuum solenoid. It's purpose is to keep the EGR from opening within 35 seconds of the ignition being turned on. I found a replacement at the boneyard and it works fine now. What a hassle! This will be the last time it will have to pass smog as it will be 30 years old and exempt the next time it's due. Yea! This one runs - I've also got a 71 in the garage receiving a complete restoration. The 74 gives us something fun to drive while completing the other. See you around.
