Western State Hospital
Has anyone visited the ruins of the Western State Sanitarium down in S Tacoma @ night? I went there yesterday afternoon and naturally I saw nothing unusual but it certainly has a creepy atmosphere to it. I read an anecdote on the net giving directions claiming of hauntings there but I have yet to go at night to find out for meself.

Western State Hospital
Yes, to answer your question, AGHOST has done an investigation at Western State. It opened in 1876 and was closed by the state sometime in the 1950s. In that time, a person could be declared insane for any number of reasons and incarcerated against their will by either the state or their family. Mental health and the root causes of insanity were still a long way off. Most of the people who are buried in the there were subjects of violent abuse, beatings, punishments, operations and other treatment proscribed and deemed necessary to cure the person of their illness. Sadly the numbers of people who died there will never be fully known, as some grave markers have been damaged or destroyed due to vandalism and lack of records by the hospital.
As to going at night, we at AGHOST do not recommend it. It is posted private property and is against the law to tresspass after dark. Cemeteries can also be very dangerous especially at night from inadequate lighting, sunken graves and other obstacles. If you wish to know more about the hospital, we suggest you contact the Historical Fort Steilacoom Association, c/o of Jefferson Davis USRC.

western state
scott and i,sandy and scott collection , from your web site pics, i have been to western state at night. unfortunately alot of teenagers party there so some nights there there partying. very creepy place to ghost hunt, sadly my pics i took are gone, but i did have an experience where in one room , which i was told they did shock treatments at, i felt an instant temp change from cold, cold nite, to very hot in that room where i left it, climbed out the open window. i had orbs in my pics that someone took, very interesting, it is against the law to go, but if u are quiet and sneak in, its actually quite easy to do and alot of people go. but make sure u are strong enough, i also went up the stairs, that go nowhere, cause its in ruins, and i felt a huge pulling emotion , pulling me towards inside the building,
Re: western state
So I guess they would never give any of us permission to go take a look huh? The Ghost Hunter and psychic feeler in me really wants to go investigate. I live in Bremerton so it is not far from me, but alas I dont want to have to sneak and then possibly be caught. I can't offord to go to jail or get fined.Plus it gives less credability to the Ghost Hunting Community. Damn I wish I could see and feel it though! That is the problem I keep running into. How do we get access to these places with out braking the law? The ones that give tours want a few hundred dollars. You could go broke after a while, lol. It is very frustrating.Michelle F.

Be Careful
One thing that I would recommend, from talking to some people about that place, is to be careful going there at night.
There are some people that frequent that place that are not of the nicest nature, and may take GREAT offense at the fact that you are "trespassing on their territory" if you catch my drift. And I'm not talking about ghosts, but real people. The kind of people that won't mind hurting you quite badly and then leaving you where you fall...
Just a recommendation. I personally haven't been there, as Mental Institutions scare me, especially old ones where they did mid-evil ;p things to people. But this is what I have been told about that place by more than one person.
Newho - you don't need to worry about the patients of the institution, they aren't the crazy ones. It's actually the so called "doctors" there. They're the people that get their rocks off by hurting others...
