Now that the last Movie is about to be released, do you think people will become bored with Tolkien and his work, or do you think more people will become interested enough to become die hard fans of his work?

Some people will become die-hard fans, but the Bloomies and the like will probably let it fade (thank goodness...hopefully the Barrow Downs Chat will return to something resembling a coherent haven).
I think that the majority of the people will let it die down. However, those that remain will be really good additions to the addiction...erm...cult...erm...madness. At the moment, the majority of the newcomers aren't really that serious, it seems. However, those that are serious in their love are really cool people, and will probably hang around a good while after the movie buzz dies down.

Newbie’s can be annoying . If they are being a nuisance at the Barrow Downs, just guide them here. Bree makes a great training ground for those just starting out into the world of Tolkien.
Besides, we need more members, so I'm not above stealing them from the Downs.

I also think the majority of the movie fans will let it die down, but I know that the movie hype has created some new die-hard fans. Me, for example. I read the book just before the FotR movie was out, because of all the fuss, and now here I am, taking lessons in Elvish and the ruling Tolkien quiz-master at my school

Hiriel, I'm in the same boat. I bought the book right after I found out that there was going to be a movie. The previews made it look cool, so I decided I'd give the books a try.
And, well, here I am today. Moderator, queen of all random trivia and serious discussions, Tolkien maven...well, you know.
I think the people who are inspired to read the books by the movies will stay, but those who have only seen the movies will probably drift away. And the Bloomies...sigh...the Bloomies. What to say about them? Maybe if they get into the real story they can become serious fans.

I agree with what's been said so far, but I also think all the hype has had some negative affects. I think the materialistic side and the Bloomies probably drove away the kind of person most likely to become true fans of the books if they weren't already. For example, I have a friend who absolutely refused to read the books until recently because of all the hype. Now that he's reading them, though, I think he'll really like them.
Of course, Hiriel and Ellenna prove that that's not always the case, and then you have people like me who had read the books but didn't know anything about the whole online community until I found out that my more computor literate friends were also fans and they introduced me.

I can understand how people can be put off by the movie. Especially when you are constantly being bombarded with product pitches that use the movies as a sales pitch (they are using it to sell KFC here). People will start to get sick of the whole thing. The last thing they want to do is pick up a book that reminds them that Gollum is jealously guarding the last popcorn chicken treat (KFC again)!
Uhm... Whats a Bloomies? Is it like A Leggy, but for Boromir. I've never seen it used untill today!

Where's here?
We mean Bloom as in Orlando Bloom who played Legolas.

The movies have created many new fans in the last three years who have collectively spent over $3.5 billion. I think that what we are seeing now in not much different from the buzz that was created in the 60's when they mass released 3 million paperback copies between 1965 and 1968. Back in the 60’s the scholars were howling that the mass release would drew the wrong types; many hippies had been drawn to the hobbits bad habit of smoking pipe weed.
You will always see people looking at the negative effects such as in the 60's when many people then associated the rediscovery to books to hippie the taking of drugs Smoking pipe weed
Me, I think that any publicity is good if it inspires just one more person to read the book, and then join us here at bree.

Is there a community of Boromir fans? I might actually have to join that one. I've been working on a fanfic...
I think that once all the movies are out, the hype will die down. After all, you hardly see "Braveheart" being used to sell products now, but that doesn't mean it's less of an awesome story.

Good point. I think, and very much hope, that you're right. While I do appreciate the opportunity for new converts, the hype really bothers me, especially the way some people will look at you. It's not the "you're a wee bit odd" look, I'm used to that one (and, I'll admit, take some pride in getting it), it's the "oh, so you've jumped on the bandwagon" look that annoys me.

That many more fans will in confusion turn to the books for clarity. The next step will be that they become so ingrossed in the books that they will want to further their studies and join a LOTR forum so that they can discuss issues with other fans.

Thats a good way of putting it namo.
I think I turned to this site out of confusion . There are many aspects of the book that I did not understand when I first read it. I just ignored them and kept on reading. Now that I am a member of Bree, I've come to appreciated the many layers that the LOTR has, not just that superficial top layer that I first enjoyed.
Nice sig Namo, but the color is too light. It distracts from your post. Oh, and welcome to Bree.

Unfortunately, you do also now get people turning to the filsm for clarity on the books. This is...probably not the right way around
I think the films have changed people's perception's of things: it is harder now to read LotR and not have in your mind the image of the actors rather than your own mind-image...

Re: What do you think the effects of the movie will be?
However, I think the movie did a good job of explaining to the non-literary audiences that yes, there is life after the Council of Elrond, which lasts for around a million years in the novel.
A darkness lies behind us and we have turned our backs upon it, and we do not desire to return thither even in thought. Westwards our hearts have been turned, and we believe that there we shall find Light.

Its like when you have a tune in your head, the only way to get rid of it is to sing another song. Just go and borrow the cartoon of LOTR's and watch that.

Maybe not, Sister!
Elenna, I know what you mean - I had to go back later because I'm afraid I skimmed places in the Council. It just went on...and on...
