What is an idol?
Most of you would answer that as a statue of some sort that someone worships instead of God. Although true, that's not the only kind of idol.

An idol is something with great significance in your life. This can include ANYTHING that takes your time from worshipping God. Examples can include Sports, Games, Work (if done overly much), Reading (other than Scripture), etc.

Believe it, or not, these can all be idols and we are called to not lift anyone or anything above God.

This is not to say that you cannot take part in sports, gaming, reading, or working. However, excessive amounts will make that activity become idolic. So be careful. I know that Gaming has taken over many of our lives just in this clan. Many have realized the danger and slowed down. Perhaps it is time for others to look at their lives and determine if anything they do can be considered idolic.

Re: What is an idol?
Dating can be an idol, or any other kind of relationship for that matter, especially romantic, if it doesn't bring you closer to God. I am very blessed to be in a loving relationship with a girl who brings me closer to God, and I bring her closer as well. Since we've been growing closer to each other, we've grown SO much closer to God and we're both much stronger in our faith because of it. I have dated before, and I admit that I have turned it into an Idol of sorts before. Now I'm thankful that God has shown me how to keep him first in this relationship.

Idols are more than statues
The first reply is correct, idolatry is the worship of created things in lieu or in addition to worship of God. To assist you here the definition of worship is 'to give worth unto' and does not purely activities in religious services.

Common idols include football (including armoured rugby as played in America!), media celebrities (look at the screaming fans) and games (oops).

However self flagellation is not the order of the day. God hates sin he does not hate fun. Please do play football (including armoured rugby) enjoy films and music (without worshipping the celebrity) and play some games (preferably leaving out the occult bits and keeping a balanced life).

Bless you.

Games. I ought to repent.
