What is required to go to heaven?
What do you think a person has to do to go to heaven, assuming they have been lightly exposed to all faiths.
Believe every word of the Bible literally
Be a Christian
Believe in the Judeo-Christian God
Be a good person who acts like a Christian should
What's heaven?

oh oh...i know this one
to go to heaven means that you have accepted Jesus as your saviour, i.e. you accept that he has died for your sins (which you should have died for), and that you have accepted Jesus. You should try and seek God, by reading the Bible (ok so i don't do it all that often right now, but slowly getting better), but no matter what we do, how bad we sin, as long as we truely want to follow God (even when we choose to sin on purpose sometimes, when we feel weak), we will still go to heaven.

correct me if i am wrong, i often am, but i doubt here.

i agree, if you have excepted Christ into your heart you can go to Heaven, all it takes is Faith and nothing more

You have to be a actual Christian (with Christ in your heart) to be able to get admission into heaven. It doesn't matter if you give all your money to some great organization, and act like a good old little granny, you have to have asked Christ into your heart, and have him in there to go to heaven.:)

Hi all, sorry, ive been so busy this week. first week of school, soooo busy. Anyway i think that you should strive to do your best in all aspects of life, give glory to God in every way possible, and create a yearning in a way such that it doesn't become a routine, but it you do it out of your heart and of your own accord.Btw, are you the Emily i talked to on icq last night? i have a feeling you are.

Another thing...
what do you mean by literally? Because i look at the Bible as the authoritative Word of God, and i beleive everything in there. Does "literally" mean this?

"Literally" means that you think everything in it means exactly what it says rather than using symbolisms and figurative speech.

You need the answer on there of "Accept Christ Jesus into your heart." As the others have said, that is the ONLY requirement to get into Heaven. That doesn't mean you can just say that and get in though. You must really mean it with all of your heart and soul.

Avoiding sin is important, but being sin-free (or as close as is possible for a person) will not get you into Heaven. Believing the Bible as completely literal will not get you into Heaven. And just believing in God won't get you into Heaven either... you must remember that even Satan believes in God.

Now, before anyone jumps in and says anything about my answer for how to get into Heaven not being 100% true.... Yes, if you sin all the time and never repent, you will not likely go to Heaven even though you accepted Jesus into your heart. The reason is that by sinning and not repenting, you have shut Jesus away from you and he's no longer being allowed into your heart.

It's all about Jesus.

While on the topic of what it takes for heaven. Yes, real faith in Christ, and yes, having Him dwell in your heart. That's it. Having Christ in you means a lot more than warm fuzzy feelings about Jesus and believing in Him. There is a slew of things that derive from and follow that prime premise of Grace by Faith. That Faith must be lived. Remember that the One who is Great gave us the Greatest Commands and a Great Commission. To be a friend of Christ is to do as He says. And we do as He says, that is we show our love for Him by showing our love for others, because it is the proper response to His love. There is nothing stopping any of us, nor is there a good enough argument against carrying out the plan of Salvation and Redemption of the Most High God. Remember that we are all servants of the Most High God, our Father in heaven.

According to the Bible, God's Word, one must be "sinlessly perfect", i.e., "...as righteous as Christ, Himself"!, in order to receive Eternal Life & enter in to the presence of the Holy God! Check out the scriptures posted at my website on this important subject:

No.9 - You do not receive eternal life by working for it or by trying to make yourself behave.

Now I don't think there is a contradiction here because I believe not only does Christ raise us all, he raises us repaired or perfect.

We will never be free of sin until we enter Heaven through Jesus. I don't have time right now to get any verses because I'm already running late for work, but perhaps someone else can give you the verses.

It is not by works, but through our faith in Christ as our Savior that we get to Heaven. And part of "works" is trying to be free of sin which is not possible until we get to Heaven.

First it totally disagree that we will never be sin free untill we die. THis is philosophy and has no basis in the scriptures.

Yehshua died for our sins. How dare we say that we still have them. Once you ask for forgiveness and repent, etc., at that point you are sin free.

Second, if accepting Yehshua was mandatory to get into The Lords Rest, the too bad for Moses, David, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Elisha, etc....

Of course unless they will be given this chance at the great ressurection.

I too used to think that the idea of not being sinless while on Earth was stupid. My arguement was based on such passages as Matthew 5:48 nd 2 Corinthians 13:11. Then I learned that "perfect" means "complete, mature." So I re-examined my stance on the subject.

The conclusion I have reached is this: though was have been given salvation and life in Christ, while we still live in this world we are connected to the flesh (sinful nature). It will be when we are given our eternal bodies (what exactly they will be I am not sure, may just be like our regular bodies but without desease, defects, etc.) that we will be seperated from our sinful nature. This makes logical sense, because most (if not all) Christians have sinned after becoming Christians.

Ok, so the question is, can we resist sin succesfullly on Earth perminantly, without ever failing? That's where I'm not sure. I do know that at least most Christians continue to sin, myself included. But we nonetheless have the Holy Spirit which gives us the power to resist temptations.

There are 3 verses that I am thinking of, but I'm not going to look them up right now. Please remind me to do it later. The first verse tells us that the HS gives uspower to resist temptation, the second says that God will not allow us to be tempted with more than we can handle, and the last is 2 Peter 1:3-11 (focusing on verse 10b).

My ultimate conclusion: we can resist sin succesfully, but the question remains: will we?

Nukes: Every Christian sins every day. I don't think I could count how many times I sinned today. I am a sinful creature who continually falls short of God's glory and so is everyone who's ever walked this Earth except One. Don't make it your goal to go the rest of your life without sinning because you can't and you'll just get discouraged. Try not to sin, but when you do, ask God for forgiveness as soon as you can. Yes, God helps us not to sin, be we often don't ask Him for that help.

I'm surprised you can say that with such assurity. I didn't know you kept track of every Christian on Earth during every day. :)

I sin every day, yes. Does that mean everyone is as pathetic as I am? If so, then the Bible must be lying when it talks about Christians being able to resist sin.

Seriously, I find it hard to believe that every Christian has fallen to sin in every day of their life. There are many Christians out there who wouldn't surprise me if they went for weeks without sinning. Of course, such people are so rare that part of me doubts I will ever meet one.

Anywho, I'm just rambling here.

umm
another thing which just popped into my head was that :
(a) by trying to be perfect by ourselfs and not understanding that it is god who has the honour, we may become zelots (and i don't mean SC)
(b) also if someone goes a long tme not sinning (or more likely not sinning a particular sin) they may be overjoyed and thankful to God, but when they do finally sin again, deep depression could slip in (enter Satan who may try and use it as a reason it point out how pathetic a failure you are etc. etc. etc.)

the answer? i don't know i'm still depressed.

Heres a story I think you can enlighten you. I feel very strongly about this, since I have had many problems with it myself. I thank the Lord for showing me the right way.

Matthew 18:21-35
Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. We know that God will not expect us to do something that He wont do Himself. So, when he wants us to forgives others, he will also forgive us.

2 Chr. 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

So we know that we should not sin. And when we do, we can ask for forgiveness and receive it. From all that I have written so far, here is my main point. I know alot of people have problems with forgiving themselves. We can so easily obtain forgiveness from God, but why do we find it so difficult to forgive ourselves from the sin we have committed?

Heb 10:17 & 18 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

1 Cor. 6:9-11 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Wow, and such were some of you, were, but we can be sanctified! Forgiven!!

The advisary would love us to keep ourselves from achieving the victory in our lives. Dont be fooled. Remember He died for our sins, please dont make His death useless in your life because you refuse to forgive yourself.

If God has forgiven our sins, and remember them no more, who are we to keep bringing them up, and holding ourselves accountable for sins that are already under the blood of God?
