Where are the Homemakers?!
Good Morning!

I just thought I'd drop by and ask you all a question that has been on my mind...

Last Friday, my family and my Grandparents went to the Missouri State Fair. I'm not an amusement ride person per say and we only go to the fair to see the livestock, home economics displays (i.e. quilting, sewing, embroidery, baking, canning, ect.), Missouri's award winning crops, and the like. My Mom, Grandma, and I were greatly disappointed to see such a lack of skill in the area of home economics. The various cakes and breads were not appetizing at all! It's understandable when they've been in the building for 7 days, during the fair. However, we went on the second day, and the food was relatively freshly baked! The handwork was extremely limited and what was there was mostly poor quality. It was hard to believe out of the State of Missouri this was the "best"!

Have you ladies noticed this in your area? Does it seem like homemaking skills are a dying art? I'm really interested in hearing your point of view on this!

Awaiting your reply...
Emilee Elizabeth :girl

Re: Where are the Homemakers?!
One more thing I forgot to mention...

The men's division of baking looked far more appealing than the women's! What's that about? :sad :( Where are the ladies who will stand for what the Lord has called them to be--homemakers (keepers of the home)?

Re: Where are the Homemakers?!
Emilee...

I know how sad that must have been to see. I agree that the lack of homemakers in this culture is amazing! I believe that they are all in offices working on their career. They fill up their day with getting the children off to school, working a 9-5 job, picking up the kids from day-care and then picking up a quick dinner somewhere. It's sad!!!!!!!!!!!!! There has been a generation gap somewhere where the older women didn't teach the younger and now we have very few homemakers.

On the same note, we have a family in our church that we are very close to. We have been to their home many times. Both husband and wife work. With all the money they make, there house is just that...a house. It is not a home. There is nothing soft about their home, nothing warm or inviting. It's cluttery with junk. It doesn't take money to make a home it takes TIME and LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember when I was working in a office (part-time) and I would bring in a homemake cake...the ladies thought I was some superwoman for performing that duty :lol They would say...."You have such talent...I could never have done that". Just for making a homemake delicious cake!!!!!!:eek :eek

Oh Father, may we teach the younger to treasure the calling of being a keeper-at-home!

Blessings,

Re: Where are the Homemakers?!
Hello girls,
I so totally agree with all that you two were saying. I have one thing to add, however. WHERE ARE OUR MEN WHO ARE WILLING TO BE MENNNN??? :sad It's really sad! The men these days aren't really wanting "their woman" to be in the home and caring for it's needs. They take on more of the attitude of: I work, you work, we help each other when we get home. Therefore, no one has a neat and clean home to come to at the end of the day. The husband is doing laundry, the wife is mopping the floors. Sure, it's a wonderful thing to work together in many areas- but... (i stutter)... why are our men no longer wanting the role of the woman to be distinctive from there own?? I have a girl cousin who is studying to become an auto-mechanic. Tell me what's feminine about that?! And her BOYFRIEND (more like significant other)is doing it with her! He's so excited! Talk about a buddy buddy thing. No femininity there. Nothing in her style of dress or demeanor. It's really sad the way our roles have been messed up in our society today. I was talking to a guy friend a while back about the roles of men and woman in a home. He shocked me with replying that he basically thought it made no difference who was leader or not. That if the woman was stronger, or more suitable, then she should be the one. If not, then... well... anyways. You get the picture-the men are not taking their God given positions in a home! And many of our Christian colleges are teaching these methods.
Everyone is about career, money, job, position, ect... Not many are just into the country life, or living a life comparitively free from clutter and junk of the world.
Anyways! I have gone WAY off... hehe
I will say, though, Emilee, that on a whole, Missouri doesn't do a good job quality wise with their homemade items. It's-whatever's cheapest and quickest. My mom does quilting for people here in Missouri, as well as other states. She does a beautiful job. But... she's not a native. LOL!
at any rate, I gotta get back out to the garden to pull more weeds. amazing how they can grow, but not your own vegetables that you PURPOSELY plant!! goodness gracious. hehe!
love ya's,
Sarah

Re: Where are the Homemakers?!
It is so sad. Society says that being a keeper at home/housekeeper is demeaning and unfulfilling. :\ If only women could see how much satisfaction they can have when doing GOD'S plan for their lives!

To me there is no greater "career" than staying at home, serving a husband, raising and loving children God has blessed me with and homeschooling and being a housekeeper. :)

Although, I will say my dad, in addition to leading and providing for the family, cooks an awful lot around here. ;) (Yeah, I know that's NOT the point you girls were trying to make, but...)

Re: Where are the Homemakers?!
Sarah,

I loved your post. I am starting to wonder where the godly men are these days also! Oh.....it saddens me! I don't know of many men (except my dear papa) who want their women to be just that....women. To be different, unique, special. In my opinion, the moment a man says I want my wife to work....he is NOT A MAN in my eyes at all. That went right out the door. A man should be a patriot, leader, etc. Letting the wife slip into that role has messed everything up.

Thanks for your comments. It makes me realize what a job we have in front of us if we ever bare children!!!

Blessings,
~~ Aja Nicole~~

Re: Where are the Homemakers?!
Oh don't even get me started on the career vs. homemaking thing!:lol My friend can vouch for that!:lol :fiddle

We don't usually go to the county fair here, but friends of ours do, and they were all concerned that the arts and crafts, and baking, is dying out! It's really sad. I am apalled at how many girls i know, girls over age 15, who can't cook at all. Now, i realize there are reasons for that, and I certainly don't intend to be judgemental. But still, there seems to be no desire to learn any skills of the home! You know, there was a day when a girl who possessed good home skills was looked on with respect and admiration. That day is long gone! Now you're admired if you can hold your own against a man.Women really gave up something very precious when they said they wanted the same role as men. Where have all the homemakers gone? To work:\

I absolutely love this quote by Peter Marshall:

"I believe women come nearer fulfilling their God-given function in the home than anywhere else. It is a much nobler thing to be a good wife than to be Miss America. It is a greater achievement to establish a Christian home than it is to produce a second-rate novel filled with filth. It is a far, far better thing in the realm of morals to be old-fashioned than to be ultramodern. The world has enough women who know how to hold their cocktails, who have lost all their illusions and their faith. The world has enough women who know how to be smart. It needs women who are willing to be simple. The world has enough women who know how to be brilliant. It needs some who will be brave. The world has enough women who are popular. It needs more who are pure. We need woman, and men, too, who would rather be morally right than socially correct."

--Peter Marshall

Amen!

Deb

Re: Where are the Homemakers?!
HI Aja, and others!
I've really enjoyed reading y'alls comments and actually seeing that there are other girls in this world that want what I want! very few of them are around. Now to find the guys to go with them. hahaha. well, you know, God is in charge, and He has got the perfect guy to go with each one of us. I'm certain. ;) We just gotta be patient.
Isn't it amazing how many guys are in school for years and years and years? I've noticed this especially. Many guys are in school until 28 or 30, and then they finally decide they'll get married, and THEN, after all that, they want to wait 5 years to have a kid!! C'mon!! hehe! I'm all for waiting a little while after marriage before you inundate it with children. But not 5 years! Especially if you are married to a guy that's 30. That means, he'd be 35 before he had decided to have his first child. So, by the time your child is older, they've got an older father as well. Anyways. Here I am rambeling again. lol Seems like i do alot of that on here. ;) hehe
But these are just some of my thoughts. ...

Amen Sarah:\

It's like they are in a state of perpetual immaturity:rolleyes

They don't have to grow up, so they don't want to. Oh well, God has the right guy out there somewhere;)

And God will grow him up for me:lol :clap

Re: Where are the Homemakers?!
:wave Hi Ladies,

Thanks so much for sharing your point of view on this topic! It's been very interesting to read your thoughts!!

It's important to remember, as it says in Scripture, we are the minority! Godly young men, as well as young women are few and far between. I've had the blessing of being able to become acquainted with many Godly young men. So, I know they do exist! LOL! :lol ;)

The Lord has taught me this is a divinely appointed time for me to mature in my walk with Him and the skills I'll need for my future home. Just as the Lord is helping me to be more mature, I know He's doing the same for my future husband. Would I really want to rush the process? No way! There are too many good things the Lord wants me to learn and accomplish in this time of being single! They will all accumulate to make me a more mature woman for the betterment of my family and future family!

Since we are a minority, compared to the population of the world, Christian homemakers will be few. The world has another agenda lined up for women. Praise the Lord for those Christian wives and mothers who find joy in their home, and have set an excellent example for us! :flower

So, be of good cheer!! Faithful, Christian young men and young women do exist! :) The Lord knows exactly who the right young man is for each of you and when it's time He'll bring you both together. No sooner and no later. His timing is perfect... and resting in Jesus gives such sweet peace! :) Praise the Lord! He is SO good to us. :love

Keep looking to Jesus, friends!!! :)

Re: Where are the Homemakers?!
I also have noticed that over the years, the quality of the homemade items at the San Diego County Fair has gone down, and the quantity also. It is very discouraging.

I am not a homemaker at the present time, my divorce ten years ago put an end to that. But I wish I could be, and admire all the skills needed to run a house well.

The young men and women I teach (high school) seem to have no clue, for the most part, of the differences between them, except as it pertains to inappropriate behavior. And little to no respect is shown one to the other, and the girls are as bad as the boys.

I feel blessed that my own daughter is well-mannered and respectful, and a lover of the Lord. But trying to educate her as to the importance of the home is difficult, especially when she sees me work so hard.

Of course, on the brighter side, perhaps all the ladies who might have been making items to enter in the Fairs are at home, homeschooling their children, and are busy in that way!

Another article on the decline of County Fairs...not so much on homemakers, but on the decline of our agricultural heritage. I thought it was interesting.

Daphne,

I enjoyed reading your post! It's good to hear from you! :)

Thanks so much for posting the link to the newspaper article. It was really good and so true! I'm extremely thankful for the small amount of livestock I've been able to enjoy through my teen years. :farm I have learned so many valuable lessons!

You're exactly right... perhaps the ladies are busy with their families and are putting their time towards them instead of projects for the fair. ;) Which, in all truth, is a much better way of managing time. :)

Re: Where are the Homemakers?!
Perhaps the Reminisce members could make personal goals to enter one item in the home economics/crafts/sewing section of their local fairs? Sometimes the best place to start is with ourselves...
