Boney James and Alfonzo Blackwell!

Alto, Tenor and Soprano Saxophones, and also plays the bass, drums, guitar and piano on his CD releases. Mr. Blackwell is also a songwriter, composer and producer.

Greatest Sax Players
My brother,
Where have you been? Boney can lay down a nice groove but "greatest" he is not. Please listen to Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Louis Jordan, John Coltrane, Art Pepper, Lester Young and Sonny Rollins.......then thank me later.
Even in smoothe jazz, David Sanborn, Richard Elliott play
richer than Boney. I like Boney....his shows are fun. He has one the best contemporary percussion sections when Lenny Castro plays with him.

Greatest Sax Players
Those are great jazz legends of the 20th century. They will always be relevant for the duration of mankind. Alfonzo Blackwell and Boney represent the new artists and legends in the making. There isn't anyone out there at this time who can light a candle to Alfonzo Blackwell when it comes to his live performance. I got the chance to see him a couple of times live and time after time, he demolished the stage. Trust me, ask anyone that have ever seen him "live", and they'll break it down. He can take you to Coltrane and Mile with his tribute to straight ahead Jazz and then take you to funk with Frankie Beverly & Maze like grooves and then to top things off, he controls his horns to the point of sounding as close to a vocalist with his ballads. Also, Boney can entertain his subjects at his shows very well too.

Joshua Redman
Kirk Whalum
Wayne Shorter
Bob Mintzer
I like Boney, but to me he is more about the song and the groove than technical excellence. He is great at what he does, but those guys can play rings around him. But who cares? Music is not competition. Peace.

IMHO, it's all about context. Comparing Boney to these other players is like comparing apples and oranges. It's like saying Benson is better than B.B. King cuz he's "technically" better. They're both great, it's just a completely different style.
