I personally saaw the movie before the I read the books. However, I read the two towers before I saw the movie and found some things were not as I imagined. Did anyone else lose their original pics of what the people and places looked like? Did certian things bother you because they didn't look right in your mind?
Of course, half elf and half hobbit creatures are real. I happen to be one of them!

Actually, one of the reasons I liked the movies so much was because most of the characters fit well with the way I imagined them. They weren't exactly the same, of course, but it wasn't a jarring contradiction of what I had imagined. Well, a couple of the events were jarring contradictions, but none of the characters or places. But yes, it can be hard to remember how I first imagined a character now that those images have been tampered with.

I think PJ and the rest did a good job with casting, because most of the characters look quite like I imagined them. When I read the books now I tend to see Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Billy Boyd as Pippin and so on, but the characters I didn't like that much in the movies (...Faramir...)I still make my own pictures of. Gollum was wonderful in the movies

Hm. I don't know. For one thing, I always pictured Legolas brunet. But I can still call up my own pictures of the characters and the settings.
Viggo Mortensen was EXACTLY what I pictured Aragorn to look like, and Bernard Hill as Theoden was brilliant.

Gollum was truly perfect. As for Legolas...I dunno, Mr Bloom had his moments, but he would be more suited to proper period drama's I think. Legolas would be sort of...very aesthetic looking. Sensitive, elegant, perfectly attuned to and aware of the world around him. Certainly one good moment when Orlando Bloom expressed this was when he just dismounted his horse at Rivendell and looked around - at that moment, he had it. But I also imagined Legolas as having a slimmer face, and sort of leaf shaped, green eyes. Not very...human qualities though, so fair play to him.

I liked most of the characters in the movie the only one who I truly disliked was Frodo. In the movie he was whiner and week but in the book he had a mature strong character whose only fault was the weight of the ring as he got closer to Mordor.
Sam was perfect he was a true friend and servant who went out of his way to look after his master.
Gandalf was superb he was both mysterious and open at the same time.
Elrond was a disappointment he reminded me more of the agent from the matrix.
Galadriel was beautiful and was exactly as I pictured her
Arwen was fair I would have preferred Michelle Pfeiffer.
Legolas was ok may have been better played by a lighter framed person.
Saruman was played ok but I did not like the fight seen with Gandalf that was not how two powerful magicians would fight they did not resemble the book in any way.
Gimli was so well played that even if I had never seen the movie and just say the character I would know who he was.
Boromir was by far the most complete character and I hope to see more of Sean Bean in the future.
Merry and Pippin = perfect
Aragorn was perfect, what more can I say?

What I think that PJ is going to do with Frodo is that he is going to show how much Frodo matures during his quest. Isn't that mentioned somewhere in the book???
Sauraman-I loved because of the voice, I mean, Chistopher Lee...great, great voice.
Arwen-As much as I like Michelle, I think she'd be a titch too old.
Gandalf-Perfect choice, wouldn't want anyone else portraying him
Eowyn-I've gotta see more of her, but so far, she's been great
Treebeard-Sorry ya'll, I wasn't impressed
Gollum-Fantastic, Andy Serkis absolutely rocked that part.
Legolas-meh, if they gave the guy more lines to say, or perhaps something of more substance than 'one-liners' I could give ya'll a little more on that...

I agree with you about Legolas, DayVamp. I think that maybe the reason he wasn't too impressive in the movies is that the script isn't impressive as far as his character goes.
But, then again, he wasn't that amazing in Pirates either, and he was the star.

Cimm, we're discussing the relationship of books to movies. If this gets way off topic, I'll move it.
Mym - Star as in number of lines, not talent.
But I was amazed by Liv Tyler as Arwen. She hit it exactly as I pictured it. However, now I find that I can't separate the two.

I've never had that problem with Liv Tyler. I find it quite hard to seperate Aragorn and Viggo Mortensen in the film as Aragorn - he was pretty much perfect, in my head.

The Hobbits were not exactly as I pictured them. They felt a bit thin to me, even though they had all that extra padding and the like. But, then again, my mental images tend to come from the art based on the Lord of the Rings. I thought Viggo was a bit young and handsome-looking to be Aragorn, personally. The others were pretty good...the Ents were a bit to tree-y for me too. I remember from far off, Legolas asked whether they were trees or Orcs, so I had more of an Orc-y image of Ents as well.
And then there's Faramir, but I won't even begin with that...
Even though I don't like what they turned Arwen into, I thought that Liv Tyler made a very good Elf.
I think Orlando Bloom made a good-looking Legolas, but I'm not a bit fan of his acting. And Johnny Depp was definitely the only reason Pirates... was good.
Some of the Lorien Elves didn't feel too...well...Elfy to me. Celeborn didn't feel like Celeborn to me...and Haldir felt too old (well, considering they completely changed his role...).
EDIT: Oh: not to sound like I'm complaining and calling the whole movie bad: I liked the movies greatly...a lot of things just were not as I imagined.

I have the movie but I can't make myself see it more than once. The book however I could read 1000 x and still enjoy it.
I loved Gimli he was so well played that even if I had never seen the movie and I would know who he was.

The best part of the movies is...well, the Extended Edition in general, obviously, but I like the Cast Commentary too. The Director's Commentary is mostly comprised of PJ begging people to stop sending him threats. The Cast, though, is quite amusing. Especially when they hit the 2 hour mark in the movie and start getting cranky with each other (example: Sean Astin starts telling a story, Elijah cuts him off as usual, and Sean says grumpily "Let me finish my story!", making Elijah get grumpy and general crankiness ensues, while Andy Serkis gets very quiet and tries not to aggravate either of the Hobbits).

Hooray for crankiness!
And I just have to say that, as an actor, Andy Serkis is a genius! Sure, his actions were then turned all CGI, but the way he portrays Gollum is absolute bally-hootin (sorry. had to) brilliance!

I agree: Andy Serkis is extraordinary. He is also fairly under-rated. Most people say "but he just did the voice", but he didn't: they used his expressions and actions to create Gollum/Smeagol as well. I also found out (yay, again, commentary!) that he did the voices of three or four of the Uruk-Hai. And his comments were more insightful than most of the other actors on the Extended Edition DVD. His comments and observations actually prompted my huge desire to meet him now...besides the fact that he's just so cool.

The fact that he actually acted all of those scenes gives me enormous respect for him. Gollum is an intensely physical part, but he really threw himself into making it perfect.
