bilge odor
i have a 10 meter mid cabin express since may of this year and the bilge in the cabin (the one closest to the head) seems to give off a chemical odor which gets worse if the boat is closed for a few days. I also have noticed the same smell increases when i open the the linen cabinet right behind the toilet. there are hoses in it that run up from the bilge one is the holding tank vent and the other the pumpout tube. i think that the bilge might need venting . when i was looking for this boat i saw one in which the seller had installed a solar vent in the head (he said it was to remove moisture when the shower is used) but he was trying to sell the boat so i dont think he would say that a bilge odor is common. We dont get the odor in the engine or aft bilge. and as far as i can tell the bilges dont mix. i had the head pumped out and washed it out and had it re pumped, tightened all the hose clamps (mascerator, vent vaccu-flush etc) and washed out the bilge with bilge cleaaner and more recently with spic and span (suggested by a mechanic at my marina). any suggestions??? please respond to this board or at my e mail kenlclub@aol.com

Re: bilge odor
I had a bilge odor too recently. I'm not sure if they were related in any way (I think mine had to do with a/c condensation). I took a hose and ran water into the bilge for a few minutes, then added liquid Tide and took the boat out for a few hours to move it all around. When I got back to dock I vacumed all the bilge water out with wet vac. I don't know if this will work for you, but it did for me.

ODOR
SANITATION HOSES DO SMELL AFTER A FEW YEARS OF USE YOU MUT REPLACE THEM ALSO IF YOU HAVE A HOLDING TANK (DO NOT USE ANY DEODORANTS WITH FORMALDEHYDE) IT WILL SMELL AWFUL AFTER A WHILE.

Re: ODOR
I would agree with the smell possibly coming from the a/c condensation. The evaporator and drain pan can get really nasty with lint and such so that the condensation will lay in the pan and stagnate, especially if it is a T16 or T12 model heatpump. Clean the evaporator fins and pan really well and make sure the 2 drain lines are free to flow. This may be your solution.
