hard drives
Depending on your company preferences (if you have any) i have a good suggestion in case you need to upgrade yours.
Just last week my hard drive started making this weird noise which sounded like the computer fan, except it wasnt it.
1. First you allway have to listen carefully if you hear an unusual sound comming from your box.
2. Then you have to lock down on the problem source by putting your ear and locating the device or the area of the noise source.
3. After locating the problem source in this case being your hard drive you must act quickly on purchasing another hard drive. you might have a day, a week perhaps a month before your hard drive becomes dead.
4. I do suggest minimal or no use of your computer before you purchase your new hard drive, in order to save your information.
I have always used WESTERN DIGITAL as my hard drive company until last week. I found out after doing a bit of a research that MAXTOR offers an instalation CD SOFTWARE along with the hard drive giving you some options.
1 if your old hard drive is still funcioning properly you can choose the option to copy all system files and all the files that you had on your old hard drive, thus not loosing a thing.
This option will take about 1-3 hours depending on the size of your original hard drive. That is exactly what i had to do.
In case your hard drive is not fully functional you still have the DOS version which is likely to recover all or most of your data including system files. This last one depends on how bad your hard drive has been affected.
So, you save about half a day of work reinstalling sytem files, and all your hardwares and softwares before being able to have things back to where they were originally.
I hardly reccomend MAXTOR as your new Hard Drive source.
Save time and hair pulling for something more important.

Re: hard drives
Remember, always remove static electricity before touching something inside your computer by touching either the frame or any metal part of your computer .
Make sure you shut down your computer before altering begins.

Re: hard drives
I'm in computers for like, 15 years, and I never ever had 1 single computer component break on the account of direct touchig, on the metal or integrated circuits or chipsets or whatever, or from plugging in or out any cables with the computer working.

The first thing that a user should know about WD is that it suxx big time. The lamest hard drives ever... Personally, I found out an interesting issue: there are no WD drives that will not, eventually, break. You can see Maxtor, or even 20-15 years old Conner, still working, but nooo 5yo+ WD.

Re: hard drives
Things are never that simple:

Quote:
However, there may be trouble afoot. In May 2003, DigiTimes reported that Seagate Technology, Maxtor and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies have started recalling some of their 40GB and 80GB products sold in Taiwan due to similar defects identified in the products. (Seagate subsequently denied that it is recalling any of its products.) According to the report, About 12,000-15,000 defective hard drives are estimated to have entered Taiwan. It is unclear whether the same groups of products, with an estimated defect rate of 10%, have also been marketed in other parts of the world, sources said. (Update: The big three -- Maxtor, Hitachi and Seagate -- have all denied any recall. -- Ed.)

Whether the manufacturers deny it or not, local distributors say they've begun to see soaring return rates on the hard drives since late April. One Vancouver-area retailer we spoke to in May 2003 says he's been returning "a stack" of Maxtors each week for a while now. Interestingly, Western Digital, the only major manufacturer apparently unaffected by these quality control issues, was widely considered to be the worst of the major vendors in terms of reliability a few years ago.

In addition, I can offer you a few pieces of anecdotal evidence -- which just so happen to coincide with the results of my own tests. I suffered 7200 rpm drive failures on drives from Fujitsu, Maxtor, Quantum and Western Digital. I've bought an awful lot of Maxtor and Quantum 7200 rpm drives that are still working fine, so this list certainly doesn't mean to suggest that all such drives have failed, but I've seen enough evidence to at least suggest that there may be a lot of other users having problems with the 30GB and 40GB 7200 rpm Maxtor models and various Fujitsu drives that failed on me.

Some brands and models are clearly worse than others. The worst model overall in recent history appears to be the IBM 75GXP. A Maximum PC article entitled IBM Deskstar Update notes the failure of 40 percent "and still counting" of the 100 75GXPs at one user's business. (IBM sold its (hard drive biz to Hitachi for US$2 billion in June 2002.). Slashdot recently posted a piece asking: Have Fujitsu Hard Drives Been Failing in Record Numbers? It cites a story in The Register, noting that Fujitsu has admitted to selling as many as 4.9 million (potentially) defective hard drives. Reports of Maxtor 40 and 60GB drive problems, particularly in the Mac world, are commonplace, as well.

since we're on the subject
does anyone know what might cause emails with attachments not to go throught?
I have this weird problem and since we're on the subject perhaps some has incountered this before and can help me....
i get this error 10053 in outlook whenever i try to send emails with attachments. I have tried different types of files and different sizes so it's not that they are to large or the extention is weird. i can receive attachments and with the same account i can send attachment from a different computer, so it's obviously not the account or the email server. But this is the situation:
i have two computers networked at work. And my husband hosts the website for my boss, which he also has an email with. This email works from outlook, but for some strange reason i can't get it to email attachment's lately. I have looked all over the web for information regarding this and everyone talks about strange extentions antivirus assuming it's a virus. (so i shut that off and it's the same)... or files being to large, or window updates having a problem and to try to install the patch. But there's nothing for me to install on window's update. So i'm stuck if anyone has any suggesting please let me know. Thanks. oh one more thing... for some strange reason i can also not log into my hotmail account, or yahoo. My boss can but once i log in it won't let me go to my inbox, but my email hosted by my husband i can check online but i just can't receive emails.
anyway let me know if you guys have any ideas people
-the happy one.
ps i have 2 more weeks of work and have to get this problem solved ASAP because i'm the only one to know anything about computers at that company. hehehe yet i seem to know nothing

the strangest thing
:) Hello everyone i'm back ... just to let you know i figured out the problem. But i still am not sure what caused it, i mean it was the router that did not let attachments go through but i don't know how or why, i reset it 2-3 times so i really didn't think that was the problem but it turned out that once i connected the computer straight to the modem it worked fine... so i reset and reset until that stinky thing got tired of me and restarted the comptuer a few times and what do you know, the router is working fine now and my emails actually go through it just made no sense why i could email attachments with another server but anyway :)
Talk to you people later
just thought i'd share what strange things i encounter here at the office ;)

Re: the strangest thing
Fericita, im really glad you figured out the problem by yourself. I would have helped you but honestly i do not use any microsoft based email, and therefore i do not have any experience in that area. But what i do know, is that at work all our computer work with routers and sometimes for the stragest reason one computer wont let you do what the rest of the computers always do, and the only thing we usually did is reset the rounter(unplug and plug again) and it fixed the problems. I do not know why it works this way but it does set thing sometimes to its own convenience. Again, im happy to hear your good news.

back to hard drives...
i have read that article that you have posted about wester digital and maxtor. You know what? I believe that article is true in most of its form. In 8 years since i build computers instead of buying brand name computers i have gone through 3 wester digital hard drives. they were 40 30 and 20 gb hard drives and average life expectancy on them was about 3-4 years give or take. For my costumers i usually instal Fujitsu hard drives and japanese brand memory and to be honest with you i never had a problem with those. On the other hand i wanted to believe in WEstern digital for the simple fact that it was my first experience, and i believed that errors occured because of the massive data transfer that i had on those hard drives. But this last one which i baught not even a year ago an 80 gb hard drive just went out on me without warning or cripping up on me. One minute was fine and the next it had that werid noise. but then again i have wrote western digital about it and they are happy to replace it for free with an additional 80 gb capacity hard drive giving 160 gb total. Simply because they told me they had a lot of recalls since last summer and they want to continue keeping costumers happy. I was totally suprized, but also happy for their willingness to help me out.
You see sometimes its worth contacting the manufacturer, but as i recall from many companies they are not always so willing to negotiate on costumers behalf. Anyways, that's all i wanted to tell you for tonight. Have a great weekend all of you.

Re: back to hard drives...
I have to add that the WD HDs are probably not only the most problematic, but also the noisiest. I have 2 of them in my PC, and they make this really annoying high-pitched noise. If I suspend the PC so that the drives spin down, the computer becomes very quiet. The sound it makes is basically air rushing through different openings. So if you're trying to build a somewhat quiet PC, don't use WD drives. I hear that Seagate are the quietest drives on the market. I'm also procrastinating on backing up my data, but I know I'm treading on thin ice.

windows updates
I want to advise you guys, that unless your computer is acting up ,or in other words you have a problem, do not let your computer do the automatic windows update. There have been many problems out of this. We have just experienced this at work where 2 of our computers did the automatic update, and afterwords one computer has disabled the mouse in the way that the mouse did not exist on the computer. We had to reinstall the mouse drives after beeing on the phone about 50 minutes with costumer support while they tried to pinpoint the problem. I was also told by microsoft costumer support that it is true that you shouldnt install any updates unless your computer is acting up. In other words if you do not have a problem, dont try to find one.
Our other computer after it downloaded and restarted the update, just didnt want to work right. It constantly kept shutting down for no apparent reason, thus making it very nerv recking for the people in the office. They called microsoft again and it took them over an hour to figure out what cased the problem, and it was basically a minor file excange in the windows operating files that had mad the bad placement thus causing the problem.
I always believed in not installing any updates unless strictly necesarry( mainly internet updates on IE holes) But even there i only did it if i had a problem with my Explorer. Which i didnt. But that may be 1 in a 100. I dont know.
How do you guys feel about this issue? You heard mine and 1 of the Microsoft costumer service's opinion, on which i am pro = +
I pretty much believe in antivirus program and a fireewall for my security. It works believe me.

Virus coming up
I have just read tonight, about a new virus that is spreading in Australia at the moment. I will give you the name tomorrow if i dont forget. All you need to worry about is any unknown mail with attachments. DO NOT OPEN IT (the attachment that is) Basically what it does it installes itself in your computer hiding of course, and it collects information on what you do and it sends it back to the original programmer or programmers. It hasnt reached the US as of yet, but they say its not aimed towards businesses since they do not open attachment mail from unknown servers anyways. IT is mainly problematic for small bussnisses and home computer users.
This just a future warning.

I think the only reason he said that was to make his job easier. I disagree with the idea that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's not the way engineers think. I say if it ain't broke, fix it anyway. Or break it, then fix it. There's always room for improvement.
