downloading privacy?
i was wondering when someone is downloading files off kazaa or some other p2p's, is it possible for like the RIAA or your ISP to track what you download? For example if you are downloading an avi file, is it possible that someone can see what you download? This has been a question my friends and i have been talking about since the RIAA's anouncement . Is it even legal for someone to watch what you download and use that as an excuse to file a lawsuit. thank you.

Re: downloading privacy?
The Government (UK) plan (if they aren't already doing it) to install recording devices at all ISPs so that they can monitor Internet traffic.

In my experience, Government's don't give a damn about the law.

Except local governments - who seem to use the law as a reason not to do something. They usually won't do anything unless they think they must do it because it is a legal requirement. I am constantly (and ignorantly incorrectly) told that it is "against the law" for them to do something that isn't covered by legislation - which is complete bollocks.
But it is somewhat off-topic - sorry!

Re: downloading privacy?
Ha!!!! Your ISP has to record everything you do online, unless you use a Proxy Server to get past that!

In the states we have had a few lawsuits in which Verizon has agreed to turn over users who have been sharing large ammounts of files (via Kazaa and other file sharing programs).

In the dat files of downloads you can even see the IP addy's of people who have downloaded the program. The record labels also use such programs to see which users have what! It also seems like governments are turning their heads in regard to your online privacy and letting, at times forcing, IP's to turn over users in such cases. As of now they are going after the big fishes, people dedicating 80 GB and more to file sharing alone, but in the future it may turn into a deal were they snag the smaller fish in their nets.

One added way around such things is to away from Kazaa itself and check into Kazaa Lite. A free program that is Kazaa without the spyware and adware! Hard to find, but you will be able to grab it. It has features in it to remove your IP addy from .dat files and the ability to creat completely random user names. Gives you access to the entire Kazaa network, without that sharing level crap Kazaa has implemented!
