engine dramas
I thought it would be good to build my own race engine. So my brother and i had a go.
So i got a hone and rings and bearings and head gasket and inlet/exhuast gaskets aswell. Thinking this will be simple and easy as pie.
Honing. GRRRRRR i can not get the cross hatch pattern!! how do you guys do it.
Cleaning the block - ahh just get a rag and some water she is apples.
Ring gaps - the most simpliest thing in the world throw in the bore get old piston and push down bore. Get feeler gauge ad measure gap. 0.009" sweet.
Fitting rings to pistons. Simple just don't break the rings and we didn't.
Fitting pistons in motor. The damn ring compressor make sure ou ahve it square and tight. We had rings pop out too!! damn things. Made sure we had covers on the rod bolts aswell. !st piston goes in and the decision was made to fit the bearings after they were in. Stupid idea!!! We can that idea and fit bearings before they go in the bore. All good now rods are in and torqued up. I hope .
So we spin the motor over by hadn to make sure she doesn't have tight spots. Nope no tight spots .
So the we bolt the rest on oil pick up and timing cover. Sump.
Were putting the head gasket on and we torque her up and start to turn motor over again. There is now a clicking sound!!! . Turns out the tensioner is bent. So okay off comes the sump and the timing cover. In this i notice my brother has siliconed the front of the ehad gasket to stop oil leaking out. This leads to the head gasket being ripped. SO off comes head aswell. Replace tensioner and head gasket and timing cover gaskets. Repalce the front pulley becuase i cracked it trying to get the timing cover to line up aswell.....
So cover is back on sump is back on and head is back on. Dropped the engine in last night with the help of my mum. Aren't mums great . So engine is in and bolted up.
Tonight is the big night were i fire it up and run it in for saturdays Smokefree nightmasters

Re: engine dramas
WELL
i got it started at 12pm friday in a big big cloud of smoke.
It wont rev past 5000rpm. Seems as the the coil is playing up. Getting really hot. We found a broken ballast resistor on the completion of race 2 we nearly didn't come in becuase the was a incident at turn 1 we everyone tried to squeeze through and i nearly lost my front end!!! Lucky i braked and moved to the grass and then came back on. Replaced it and the car was running better. Then on the dummy grid lined up and ready to go we pull out on to the front straight and she plays up again!!!! So back into the pits and the coil is very hot. So have ditched it and the car is off to the auto sparky's for some minor work and a regraph on the dizzy. Hopefully that will fix the problems that it is having.
other than that great night finished 3rd in class and we didn't get any panel damage
Re: engine dramas
Speaking as an Electronic Engineer, the number one thing that causes things to get hot is cause it's pulling bulk current due to a short circuit. If you've got another coil handy toss that in and see if there's any difference first. It's not unusual for primary windings to short to secondary windings. If another coil fixes it you're sweet.
The light doesn't turn off if you get up to revs does it?
make sure all the alternator wires are on the right terminals, and maybe toss a new alternator on and see what happens. Maybe one of the diodes is dead.
