I just realized this episode airs on my birthday (you see, I've gotten old enough that birthdays sneak up on me and I usually don't see them coming). Anyway, wouldn't it be neat if I opened my presents and I had, oh, I don't know, maybe a Future Max, a Naked Running Max, a Secret-Keeping Max and a Mariachi Max! Happy birthday to me indeed!

Check out this little description I found on the roswell peapod site! **MINOR SPOILERISH!!!** Consider yourself warned!
The Dupes come to town after killing off Dupe Max. (he refused to attend the summit meeting.) So they head to Roswell to convince Max to go in his dupes place. Plus, Dupe Michael Kisses Liz! Shiri Appleby, Jason Behr, Katherine Heigl, Brendon Fehr and Emilie de Ravin.
SOOOO, Dup Max is this leader they kill off?!?! WOW!
Can't wait to see this one! I think this thread might get up there with End of the World...won't be near as much, but I think this will be another one we talk a lot about! Especially since it'll be so different and fun/crazy!

Meet The Dupes - It didn't answer many of our questions. All we got is that The Dupes went to New York after they 'hatched.' The rest is still a mystery. The Dupes are plenty different from The Podsters, with the possible exception of Ava, she seems to have more human emotions than the other two. I think something may come of that. Maybe Tess wasn't in the pods with our gang, maybe it was really Ava, and they got switched somehow. Tess seems to be colder and less emotional than the rest of The Squad. Hmmmmmmmm...... Just dandy for Nasedo to die and leave so many questions unanswered. Next week I hope we get more clues as to what the truth really is regarding these Dupes. Looks pretty wild from the preview. I wonder just what Ava is going to do alone in Roswell with no Max or Zan. Wild. And hey, all you spoiler fanatics - Rath and Ava were not an item. Whatever that ring thing is it wasn't that. I'm really interested to know what everyone thought of this eppy. It left me a little flat, perhaps, not to say that it was bad or anything, I was just hoping we'd get more answers. But no, Katims leaves us dangling for another week. Nothing resolved between Liz and Max, just another in a seemingly endless supply of awkward encounters where, as somebody here said (Karen?), Max puts on the 'kicked dog' look. Things are bad between Isabel and Max, that's gonna take a lot to fix. And why was Tess going to NYC when Ava was supposed to go? Hmm, seems strange to me.
This thread has been cold and dead for 3 days, let's heat it up a bit.

There are some inconsistencies in the dupes' story that the pod squad should have picked up on.
1. Why were the four from New York contacted and not the four from Roswell?
Their answer was that "they" (and never explain who they are) didn't know that there were two sets and only found the four in NY, not the four in Roswell. hello? what happened in the last episode? Didn't know about the four in Roswell? A raiding party was sent there to find the granolith. Someone (an entire town of aliens) knows about the pod squad in Roswell. Hard to believe that Max would so willingly believe such an obvious lie.
2. When Michael asked Lonny if the dupes were defective somehow...
Lonny's response was that the pod squad from Roswell were the defective ones, too human. Then why are they the ones with possession of the granolith?
I actually have some other theories based on spoilers that I've read but don't want to post them here in case people don't want to read spoilers here.

First off, thanks for the birthday greetings, Brian! You're the only one who remembered <sniff,sniff>
And I am the one who made the kicked-dog comment. I for one am a little tired of the Max/Liz dysfunction. I'm a total dreamgirl, but come on. Enough is enough. On everyone's account - can't SOMEONE be happy? Why does everyone have to be going through the bad times at the same time? We're missing the "feel good" part of at least someone having a decent relationship. It's getting aggravating.
Anyhoo, my thoughts on the episode. It felt like one big set up to the next show for me - not alot of answers, just laying the ground work for what is to come.
The argument between Max and Isabel broke my heart. Then I was p*ssed when I realized he'd been manipulated by Lonnie. Yet another misunderstanding to hurt Max. Poor fella.
I was bothered by Liz's reaction to "Michael" kissing her, then her reaction to Maria being upset that she wasn't told. That was out of character. Maria wants to talk about why Liz didn't tell her - and Liz turns the conversation around to some nonsensical blather about what happened in TEOTW?
And why doesn't Liz just tell Max the truth now? Especially after he told her he wanted a clean break. Mission accomplished. Tell him the truth.
I like Ava - I wish they'd give Tess some of her qualities. Maybe the rest of us would start to like her a little more.
Loved Alex approaching both versions of Isabel, and Lonnie's reaction to him. She's nobody's fool. And what a dream come true for Alex!
I thought Katy was wonderful in her dual role.
I need to watch this one again, if only to catch some bloopers for Brian (BTW - I put one out there for you )

Just watched 'The Dups' again and got a better take on it this time. Sure, it was frustrating how we got NO answers and now have a thousand new questions, but this is what I've come to expect from this show, that's what got me hooked, and the writers continue to string me along. But watching it this second time I really found it to be a very funny episode. Brendan and Katy as Rath and Lonnie were just too good! Great job there. Desmond Askew as Brody is marvelous, I hope he sticks with the show...for a while at least. Let's see here, if Brody gets together with Maria, then that leaves Michael to get together with Tess, and that leaves Max for Liz, and, of course, Isabel has Alex (another good job by the underused Colin Hanks again this week - following in his Daddy's footsteps) anytime she wants him. I don't know maybe I'm encouraging some Dreamgirl delusion here...but I wouldn't do that...would I? Nah!
As I said in my last post regarding Tess and Ava and something weird going on...well...now, after watching the eppy again, I'm CONVINCED of it. When they first meet at the UFO Center they introduced themselves with a weird look and then looked away quickly. Something there. For sure. A 'knowing' look? Like maybe they had met previously. Hmmm....hmmmmm......hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....don't know. But here's what I got (and stop me if you've heard this one before -- damn spoiler junkies): Max and Tess are walking towards the car at the end to go to NYC with Rath and Lonnie. As they reach the car Max looks at 'Tess' and 'Tess' gives him a little nod. Why the nod? A nod of encouragement? Hmmmm. What I think: At some point (unseen by us) Tess and Ava switched. It is actually Ava that goes to NYC with Max, Rath, and Lonnie. Why? Ava knew how ruthless the other two Dups were. She believed R and L were more powerful than Max and that Maxwell wouldn't stand a chance against them if something went awry. Ava knew Maxy would need her there to even the odds. Don't believe me?!? Go back and watch it again. Look at the weird looks between Ava and Tess (and how they didn't talk to each other at the UFO Center, while Lonnie talked to both Michael and Izzy, while Rath talked to Max), listen when Ava says "I don't want any part of this" when she realizes Rath and Lonnie have deception on their minds to get Max to NYC, look at the strange way the camera focuses on Ava at strange times (that's foreshadowing people - a SCIFI TV show on a smaller network doesn't have the budget to waste film on meaningless shots - they ALL MEAN SOMETHING). I was wondering why Max was taking Tess to NY. I think Ava filled both Tess and Max in on what was going on, and Max agreed to do the 'Emilie Swap.' Then I was wondering why The Dups would allow Tess to come when only The Royal FOUR were supposed to attend The Summit. Well, judging from the way they talked about Ava, they were planning on offing her before they left and they would need a fill in - it was just convienent. That plan was foiled by Max because 'Ava' was actually Tess. So, I think that's why 'Ava' was so insistent about staying in Roswell, because she was actually Tess, just made up to look like Ava. Now, this is all just my conjecture, and I may be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time, especially with this show. If I'm wrong feel free to throw rotten tomatos, but there is SOMETHING with this Ava/Tess business.
Regarding roswelfax - As for why "they" didn't know of the existence of The Roswell Four - The only reason we would think 'they' would know is if we believe everything the various Skins said (don't The Skins just seem so '5 Minutes Ago' now, after they were the big enemy for the first 7 eppys or so?). I'm thinking that The Skins were/are just a fragment rebel group that thought they could pull a fast one and capture the Granolith and conquer everyone but were not one of the 'rulers of the 5 planets' or however Rath termed it. It must be that they are not part of The Summit or, indeed, it would be strange that Max fell for that lie. But Max seems to be quite gullible right now. Oh jeez, but Liz did a number on that poor boy.
Good point roswelfax (can we just call you 'rf' or 'ros' for simplicties sake, you ban call me Brian or B or EF) about The Granolith not being in the hands of the supposedly less-defective Dups. Maybe because the crash happened in Roswell it was just more convienient to locate it nearby. Then relocate 4 of the pods further away for safety's sake.
Oh IMM...."GOING TO NY WITH TESS"...well, Emilie is going at least. And how about the look on Liz's face (and Max's hesitantcy to say it) when Max said he was taking Tess to NYC. Give Shiri an Emmy, hands down. And yes, it looks like "Max In The City" is the last eppy we get until Jan 8th, save the X-Mas episode. A big gap, lots of time to go insane waiting......but we survived the summer so this might not be that bad. "OH FEB SWEEPS HURRY AND GET HERE... Just think, if FEB SWEEPS are more intense than what we've been getting so far, we may all be in intensive care with massive heart attacks........

EF - as long as I know you are referring to me I'll answer to any of the above I have to admit my speculations may be colored by the various and conflicting spoilers I have read. (But I know better than to spoil those who want to remain unspoiled!
Anyway this episode does bring up more questions than answers but in particular one that I think hasn't been brought up in a while: nature vs. nurture.
Why are the dupes so duplicitous (and dupes may not stand for duplicates as we've assumed but duplicitous)? Was it the way they were brought up, we know almost nothing of who raised them or how, or is it the essences that they were imbued with, or were they somehow defective?
If it is any of the above why send them to Earth as the last hope for salvation for their home planet? If it is their upbringing why risk having them brought up by what is to them an alien species (humans). If it was their original essences and the Royal Four are so conniving and mistrustful, even of each other, they seem like a poor basis on which to take back their planet and restore order.
The most hopeful explanation (and I am still hopeful that the Vilandra project was a skin plot) is that they are defective. But now I am on the edge of my seat and going to be that way until Monday night rolls around again and we (hopefully!) get some answers.

Ok here I am.. I have been watching the "happier" Roswells. Because I just can't stand this... Well Max in the City has to answer alot of questions before the Christmas eppy or else is WILL NOT make sense,,, IS IT FEB YET???

Okay, here's my theory on the whole Dupe Tess/why Max took the real Tess to NY thing.
I think maybe the Tesses were switched long time ago. Ava does seem more human and Tess more like the dupes. I watched the ep again and I noticed that Max looked at Ava differently when they first met, then he jumped to her defense when Rath was going to hurt her. Just a chivalrous act? I thought so at first, but there seemed to be more there than just that the second time I saw it. Ava seems like someone Max could have loved.
As for Max taking Tess, I think it was his attempt to move forward and leave Liz behind. He'd decided to make a clean break and maybe he was trying to force himself to accept Tess as his mate. Also, I'm not entirely sure he wasn't trying to hurt Liz, possibly in retaliation for Kyle. I don't like that idea, but it seems possible.

Hmmm, good points all around, especially about the moving forward/clean break/forcing himself to accept Tess thing. It looks like I am wrong anyway because someone HINT HINT HINT has been reading spoilers again. I'm gonna have to put some completely false spoilers up just to mess y'all up BAD. Edge of seat until "Max (and TESS) In The City" - for sure. I've already watched 'The Dups' more than any other eppy except "The White Room", "Destiny", and "TEOTW" and I NEED ANSWERS!!!
If it only takes 3 days to drive from Roswell to NYC why do we have to wait SEVEN days to find out what happens?!?

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't posted about this eppy til now. I've been so extremely busy at work and all this week (I got a big promotion) that I just haven't found the time to get on the boards and post. So, now here are a few of my thoughts.
Brian (I'm pretty sure it was you who proposed this, sorry if it wasn't), totally agree with you (though didn't think about it til I read your post) about the two Tess' being switched before. Ava has much more human qualities than Tess and Ava just seemed to "fit" better with our Pod Squad and Tess with the Dups. And HMMMMMM... about why the real Tess went to NY with Max??? Should be interesting to see what happens! Only 27 hours or so now...
Thought Katy did the best/excellent job with her dual role as Isabel/Lonnie. Loved Lonnie's attitude and just her whole demeanor...very different, but cool. Brendan was funny, too, in his dual role. Didn't like the way Zan talked...too homey G/rapper rather than New York accent in my opinion...just didn't like it.
Can't wait for Max/Liz to get back together already...the truth will come out soon...you could tell she wanted to tell him, but just couldn't bring herself to (yet)!
Oh, and noticed that Ava/Rath weren't an item...in fact Lonnie even refers to Rath as her lover. Hmmm...weird. Kinda hoped they'd leave that in, but it kinda makes better sense/more story line options (and our imaginations) the way they did it.
Have more, but need to go back to some other posts. Will write more soon.
