that's my cemetery
I am a member of the family that originally gave the Maltby Cemetery over to the government. A number of my relatives are buried there, and I've been there several times. At one point, the cemetery was named one of the top 10 scariest places in the US, and it still is when you think of all the stories surrounding it, and you look at all the cracked gravestones. There have even been a few bodies that have disappeared from their places. But now there are houses all around it, and it just doesn't have the effect it used to. The Maltby Cemetery is a creepy place, and definately worth all the great research, but it's not a place that you should be barging in on... have some respect for the dead.

old place
I have gone out there myself. Back in the 80's. I think that place is more local lore and legend. But as the last poster has stated, its family plot that is used.

I think i got freaked out more about the stories myself and all . But the 13 steps dont exist and if anyone knows anything about the whole Maltby/Clearview area,.. its a popular area and always has been for dumping bodies. Check history.. its just what happnens in that area because of all the woods.

The truth of the 13 steps
The 13 steps does exist. However, it is and I repeat! It is not the gateway to Hell. I've done some research on this subject because of another similar one back East. What this is, is a cold storage vault. Embalming chemicals and procedures were not as advanced as today, also most morticians businesses were located in town which was usually several miles away.

If a body was brought by the hearse and the ground conditions were not perfect, the casket would be taken underground to a burial and storage facility. Here the temperature remained constant, and the body could be stored down here for a few weeks until the rains abated and the ground had chance to dry.

Today, most modern cemeteries and memorial parks have modern, up to date facilities, so that if a funeral is rescheduled postponed by weather or awaiting family members, the cemeteries can now refrigerate the deceased at a constant temperature.

One of the very reasons people are not allowed to view the grounds anymore, is the senseless stupidity of people. Teenagers out drinking, or getting high search these places out because after dark they have a place to party and if the cemetery is not well known or located in a wilderness are it makes it even more fun and enticing.

The truly sad thing about this, is our beautiful graves, works of art from the stonemasons chisel are destroyed, broken or stolen for a centerpiece for the Halloween party or a just sick joke. These gardens of the dead are meant to visit loved ones, to hold family services, and to contemplate our own mortality.

The reason why these steps have finally been cemented over, is because of the very things I mentioned above. Plus it keeps drunken or stoned idiots from falling down those stairs
and breaking their necks and resulting in a lawsuit.

So please people. If you have no reason to go to Maltby other than you think it might be fun, please find another activity somewhere else and let the discovering and exploration to the trained professionals who know how to do it.

I live near the maltby graveyard (between snohomish and moroe) I know exactly where it is cuz i drive by it all the time and i have friends who have been there. The common sense truth of the matter is this, not everybody who goes there is going to get 'spooked' or see the 13 steps and not everyone who 'sees' them really sees them. My suggestion is that if you really want to know the facts; don't go there stoned or drunk, as hard as it may be for some people to do. I don't know if Maltby is haunted or not; that's not important. What is important is that ya'll stop questioning death and evil spirits and all that junk, the fact is they do exist weather you believe in it or not and if you mess around places like that it can effect you in ways you may never imagine or even know about, until you die.
trust me on this one

re: 13 steps to hell
I've heard of the 13 steps to hell and heard the same story from alot of the same people. I heard that the cemetary is a family cemetary and they are all buried there. At the end of the steps you see your soul burning in hell and each step you see different signs or visions of yourself in bad ways.:\

13 steps to hell
yea, i have friend that has supposedly been up there a few times and claims that he has "seen" the 13 steps to hell. but he went up there a couple days ago and he said they werent there anymore. of course he had friends with him this time. and ive also heard that a woman and her children were killed in a car accident up there and they now haunt the road where they died. any of you know this to be true? and lastly m y b/f and his bro were trying to talk me into going to this place. how freakish is this place? should i go or tell him no?

i have spoken with a few people who have seen the 13 steps to hell. i have been to maltby a few times and know they are not there. i've been told they're in everett, i think more likely arlington. i would like to know if anyone knows enough information that could help me and my friend check it out if for no other reason than to be able to say we did. thanks.

"the 13 steps to hell"
Aren't there, infact , two seperate Maltby cemetaries?
The one that used to be called Old Maltby Cemetary, but recently changed it's name to Paradise Lake Cemetary to avoid it's being mistaken for the infamous similarly named Maltby Cemetary. The latter being the private one which actually contains the "13 steps to hell" ?
And isn't it true that when asked directions, the locals invariably send those seeking the place that was once listed as one of America's "most haunted places" to the wrong Maltby cemetary?

Re: "the 13 steps to hell"
I'd never heard of Maltby Cemetary nor the "13 steps to hell" until reading the Michael Slade novel BED OF NAILS.
The location is featured prominantly in the book ( actually I'm currently only halfway through it, but I couldn't wait until I was finished with it to look into this facinating legendary site ) & I was immediately intrigued. So I hit up Google & it led me here. :)

I'd love to investigate the site myself someday, but living clear across the country in western New York state I somehow doubt if I'll ever get the opportunity. Fact is, I've never been further west than Ohio! :o :rollin

Anyhow, this is an extremely interesting site & one which I plan on visiting regularly. So, any info that you could provide me with concerning Maltby cemetary & it's infamous steps would be greatly appreciated. And, I plan to learn a whole lot more about some of the other haunted places in your area such as Northgate Hospital ( aka Northgate Mall ).

yes, you are correct. there are TWO Maltby cemetarys. the haunted one one would be the paradise lake road one. i hace a friend that lives right close to there. i have a friend that has been there and i dont know if he was trying to scare the @#%$ out of me or what but he said that the steps have been there and when he comes back they arent. ive never been myself. there is site that has pictures of the place along with a bunch of other places in washington that are "haunted". there is also the bear creek cemetary.

Re: 13 steps to hell
Hmmm.
Very interesting. You see, according to the novel ( & by no means am I saying that it's take on the legend is the absolute truth, it is , after all, a work of fiction ) the cemetery on Paradise road is the "regular" one, while the other one is supposed to be the "satantic cemetery" which contain the 13 steps to hell.

Any other stories, hypothosis or insights into this facinating place (s) ?

Been there don't go
Maltby cemetary is haunted and is home to quite a few mysterious people. I went there with a large group of people, we had heard the rumors and went well-armed. My friend brought along an NV scope and I as well as he saw more then one cloacked figure. Being the bad-asses we thought we were I approached while viewing my surroundings through the NV scope and pointing my firearm, but no one was there. The 13 steps do exist, if you have any sense you will not go near them and just forget that they are even there. We left in a hurry, and never returned there again.

Maltby Cemetary
It's funny how ghost stories continue on through the years. I am born and raised here in Washington and went to high school in the North Shore school district (Inglemoor High) where the stories of the Maltby Cemetary were conversation for us thrill seeking teens. The stories I have read here are all old stories from when I was in high school...I am now 50 years old. It's even the story of the same guy "caretaking" the property LOL. Now if that were true he'd be pretty damn old by now. Yes he's always had wolves too, he either chases you with a shovel or shotgun., etc. Based on very little fact. Yes there is an old cemetary there, run down, over grown but nothing spectacular....only the stories. Sorry to burst any ghostbusters thrills.

maltby cemetery
Thanks Ladyhawk for a little perspective from a local on this subject matter. :)
Frankly, I find your take on things quite a bit more believable than accounts of armed excurtions into the bowels of the cemetery. :\ I mean, I have an open mind when it comes to Maltby, but c'mon...

Maltby
I've lived off Paradise Lake RD for 24yrs; seen some very interesting things but heard alot more interesting tales. Yes, before the land was sold there was a much larger cemetary seperated by tiers. The base of the tiers, supposedly indian based, were to hold the 13 steps to hell. I have been to the base of them as a kid so many times -- long before they ever because "haunted". Since, the bodies have been moved to a private cemetary in Spokane, WA. Yeah, if I remember correctly there were 13 steps - but it lead to a small cement chamber.. not really hell. There's alot of local stories, there was "devil worship" in the late 70's, bikers used to party there in the early 80's.. And yeah, the road below has claimed many lives - a dip in a fast road the will slap any vehicle head first into a stump.

ive lived near there all my life
Ive lived near that place all my life and my mother was raised here also, there definitely is somthing strange about that place, if i was to go there it would only be in the daytime.at night i dont even like to drive by it.lets see, 1st, the thirteen steps are what used to be the root cellar in the old caretakers house(my uncle was the caretaker)before it burned down, then years later they were used for rituals by witches and some satanists ,that I also know,(one of them is j.wilson in prison at fairway hieghts in spokane),,they are covered with blackberry bushes, and there are thirteen concrete steps and then the last couple of steps have been cut off so in the dark you will fall. some of these satanists did dig up a grave about ten years ago and the body was never found by the police,(they knew who did it but couldnt prove it,or press charges). It was a body of a priest who had hung himself and if you have ever seen the movie "the gates to hell"then you know that by doing that he opened a gate.the bone that that dog found was eventually determined to be of a local guy who had disaoeared when he was walking down a trail near there during the day, several months erlier. If you ask me this whole area is haunted. I could tell you some storys, from clearview to monroe and halfway to duvall its all got some kind of crazy wild men living in the woods.like with tattered clothes,or no clothes and/or no shoes, coming out doing odd scary things occsionally. I've personally seen one and shot at another.(think i got him too.)but they even come out in the day too and not just near the cemetary, but anywhere there is lots of thick woods.possibly ghools? If you dont believe me then just ask some of the locals, not the ones in those new houses they havent been here that long, ask a native clearviewtonian and youl see.If you want to see ghosts go to the old cathcart school at night Ive even seen them. Its on the n.w.corner of broadway ave and 164th st se. take highway 9 south from snohomish and aat the second light which is at the bottom of cathcart hill, go left . go to sop sign and there is a store on the corner (cathcart store) park ther and walk across the street(164th). the school is hidden from view by some trees and bushes but its there .have fun!!!
