Nationals wrap up
IMPROVED PRODUCTIONS NATIONALS - 12TH & 13TH NOVEMBER 2005

Well they have been and gone for another year, the weather was great, the atmosphere was better and the racing was super clean. I think I only saw two cars make contact all weekend and it was just a plain old unfortunate mishap. It was great to see that competitors from around Australia can race together without deliberate panel rubbing. It proved that clean over taking moves could be made without force, which restored a number of drivers faith in our category.

The weekend started off so promising for a number of people but as the event rolled on the problems crept in and many a car / team fell out of contention for a good result.
As with any form of Motorsport there are stories to tell from one end of the field to the other. I think most competitors had a good time no mater how things unfolded for them. In the past there had been a little bad blood between some states but I believe we helped to mend a lot of bridges with this event.

Before we go any further I would like to say thank you to our event sponsors:

SIMS Metal
HT Construction Services
Extreme Brake & Clutch
Southern Gas Services
and Stateracer.

Without their support we could not have done what we did. The DVD of the event will be released shortly with on track action and many interviews. For the interstate competitors I wish we could have issued the tow money at the event however it would seem that Yokohama currently require more than 6 months to generate a cheque so I will apologise for them. As soon as the IPRASA receives the $8000 cheque Cindy will issue tow money cheques to all interstate competitors.

I must also thank the out standing efforts of the IPRASA Nationals committee:

Glen Donhardt
Cindy Stevenson
Garry Stevenson
Sue Stephenson
Grant Stephenson
Ian Statham
Angela Cotton
Brett Dodrell
Scott Clements

This list is in no particular order but I can add that this event would not have got off the ground if it wasn’t for the many hours these people donated. I would also like to thank all of the competitors who went out of their way on a number of times to congratulate the IPRASA and myself.

Now here is the official list of awards issued to competitors.

On a personal note:

In closing I would like to say thank you to those people who offered to help get me back on the track after my exciting wheel bearing / brake failure in the heat races on Saturday, you are all great. I was really happy to get to the Nationals after the rough months leading up to the event and do 17’s out of the box. Too qualify in the top ten after only doing a handful of laps in a new and under developed car gave me a greatly needed boost.

But I must accept the fact that in my rush to get my car ready for the Nationals (in amongst planning the event) I made a mistake from an engineering point of view in regards to wheel bearings that resulted in an accident. I can only offer the following advice to others, if you run the Nationals, do it well. If you run a car at the Nationals, do it well, but don’t try and do both.

As for the car the right rear quarter damage wasn’t bad enough to stop me from racing. However I did not have the time I needed to rectify the problems with the front wheel bearings properly in the time that was available. I could have given it a quick fix and risked the well being of others and myself but this would have been stupid.

My responsibility was to the event and the other competitors and not my own ego so I must say thankyou to all of you who have acknowledged how hard it was to make that choice on Saturday night.

I’m now looking forward to taking my time to get the car sorted out and relaxing for a while. To all of the guys from WA, Kevin, Sean and your crew (rataz) thank you for your many kind words. To Michael and Adam from QLD I’m looking forward to taking you up on that offer and trying some of those tracks some day soon. To Leigh and Scott from TAS it was great to meet you and your crews, you are all a great bunch. While on the topic of TAS I must say it was a shame you didn’t come Ray but you had to do what was right, maybe I’ll see you next year.

To Bob from NSW you are a champion in more ways than one, I really enjoyed our conversations and I look forward to catching up with you again. To Scott, Paul and all of the guys from the REV Doctor it was fantastic to meet you all, PS Brett said thanks for the beers and we hope you didn’t loose any more keys. To all of the NT boys, Adam Allan and Mick said you were a great bunch and I couldn’t agree more, you are all fantastic and I will aim to take you up on your offer to come and visit and race at the top end with you.

Thank you to all of the IPRASA members who were a part of one of the most successful Nationals run. Thanks for the kind words toyocharged, double44 will be back.

Cheers

Scott Clements

Congratulations
Scott,
Congratulations on what sounds like a very successful event. Its good to hear that the nationals achieved one of its objectives (other than providing great racing) and that is to introduce people from different states to each other which makes the category much bigger than the state based system that it normally is for most of the year. Hopefully many people will take up the offers of visiting other states and exploring the other tracks on offer. I know the first nationals I went to had the same effect on me.
It was a brave effort to try and race as well as being involved with the organising of the event. I considered doing that last year but was not brave enough. As it turned out, just the organising side took up all of my time at the event anyway.
Anyway, well done to all at IPRA SA.

Just a few words about the Nationals :D

I had a great time with the escort going really well after just having another rebuild on the engine, I can confirm what everyone told me before going that the track is very hard on brakes and also a place where power is everything!. Anyway it didnt take to long to get the hang of things and get around in a pretty reasonable time. Qualifying and the heats all went well except for getting pushed off the track accidently by Dave Nolan :evil but I still managed to finish OK.

The night race was fantastic, I have to say I was a bit nervous about this but as it happened I broke the lap record so my eyesight cant be as bad as I thought!8)

The final was a mixed bag because I had a good start and all was going well for about 4 laps when my brake pedal went right to the floor - I had no choice other than to slam down the gears which turned me around onto the grass. I recovered from that and was using my left foot to pump up the brakes before each corner and then at the last minute using my right foot - it was like dancing in the car:D , after still getting around OK with the brakes the way they were the gearbox jammed in 5th - I couldnt believe it!. As it happned Scott Willing in the black cossie escort broke down and David Nolan had a problem so I managed to still finish with enough points to win the under 2 litre championship.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Scott Clemence who along with all the other organisers and helpers did a great job, I found no negativety from anyone I was involved with in fact all the officials were friendly - even the scrutineers:)

Also like to thank all of my competitors because it was generally good clean racing and fun, Scott Willing (Black escort) and his team - great competitors with a fantasticly prepared and quick car were good fun to be around and also helpfull when I needed a few things to fix my exhaust - Scott I know your father liked my exhaust system and I can sell you the rights to the design if you want!:lol

Flemo - you drove the wheels off that car as you normally do - well done!, Sam Mayo - Sam kept smiling even though he had lots of problems - I have to say he was always the optomist, Dave Nolan - both Dave and the car are getting faster, To summarise it all I couldnt of asked for a better result and I really hope that next year their will be a lot more under 2 litre cars running to make things even more competitive:p

Re: Nationals
Well done Bob, sounds like an interesting drive in the final.

Regarding the night race, maybe yuo should start wearing really REALLY dark Sunglasses whenever you race - yopu might go even quicker (god help the rest of us). I'd say it was just the fact that you couldn't see what you might hit, therefore you had more courage to push harder :b

Job well done mate!

If I could echo Bobs comments, a well run event that we were all pleased to be competitive at. First time for the car at the track, and Scott's second only meeting there (previous was in the Corty) so to be racing with the locals was great! Pity there wasn't an in car camera in the RDM Rx7 for the final!

Thanks to all the IPRA SA organisers, right from the word go, being able to drop off the car and unload the Canyonairo on Thursday afternoon to getting a lift from Brett for the guys once it was loaded again on Sunday afternoon, fantastic.

Im very much looking forward to seeing all the footage from the races I missed over the weekend, and any photos that might end up on the net (any hints for sites??).

Thanks Phil Laird for the loan of the Mig, and also to Shorty and Michelle for their offer of assistance, even though in the end we didnt need it, but the doughnut was great (You should have gone Boppa!!!) ;)

Most of all, a well deserved win to Adam and his team, fastest all weekend and it would have taken an act of God for us to get him, and I came close to praying!!! Oh and a special mention to Kevin Ledger and the Integrity team, from almost a disaster of a weekend to 8th after starting Way back, well done!

Now to find a track with a few faster corners ;)
