Re: Re:
i'm fine with the alphabet and sounds - just got to learn to read it now
@sander: i will put in those extra spaces when writing triáni, but what i wrote for earl was intended to be read in roman so i didn't bother
@earl: to change to the triani font, you write your message as normal, then select the text, go to the "typeface >>" box above the message body textbox, click on "custom..." then change the font size to medium, then click "set font". you'll then need to type "triani" into the inputbox that appears
Re: Re:
new font version; ric pointed out it would be lots and lots easier if we'd put the other letters of the alphabet (the ones that the romance one doesn't have) in the capital versions of the old letters. So, that's what happened in this new version. Lower case is standard, upper case is for instance the eth sound, thorn, french r, welsh ll, stuff like that. also the vowels are accented (to be long) in the capital versions, so that's easier as well.
Re: Re:
I dislike the English short a (as in cat). I don't think we should include it. I originally had that as short a in Crandish, but when i realized there actually is a small but important different between a long and short a sound (as in German, NOT English" I changed it. How you say the word "are" is different than how you pronounce ar in Arkansas, just for example.

Re: Re:
there is a third a-sound in English, the first part of the diphthong "i" [ai]. That sounds is in Spanish, and German (along with that a's long counterpart).
I am not really an expert in English phonology, but the short a in English can be pronounced in England as a long a (dance), like in german "ee". Actually, the short a is used in Finnish and written as ä...
Um? What did I just write? Anyway I remember a "fight" you and i had, Johanns, it was about how to pronounce the o in pot . The Americans (most of them) do not make a phonetic different with the vowels in part and pot. But there is a tone difference I'd think /'pà:rt/ versus /'pá:t/. I do not know if tones are actually correct, but from I have heard it should be like that. Chinese if filled with tones and Swedish also has them.

Re: Re:
There is a difference between Pot and Part. For one thing, there's an R in part! I know the Brits don't like to pronounce your Rs, but here in America we do, always! To the point where we actually insert them into words where they don't do. (For example, people usually say Masterbation here even though it's spelled Mastabation, lol) Also, I pronounce a short a for part, a long a for part. Paht and PaRt. (I won't write Paut or Pawt because of the argument me and Ric had over that. Apparently the Brits say au like an O. Crazy Brits ;-p.)
I don't enitirely understand what Ric just wrote, who says dance with a German long e sound? A like in cat.

no we don't - i thought americans pronounced it a bit like that - e.g. "cause" = pronounced like "coz" (well, a bit like that anyway)
i'd pronounce "cause" like "corz" (without an "r" sound )
tjuh without us crazy brits you wouldn't have a language to speak. you'd be speaking dutch. and new york'd be called nieuw amsterdam

Blah
Welll on the other ahnd I find English an ugly language... I got his book on differences between American and British sounds... And both Brirtish and American accents include thousands of dialects.
Re: Blah
Americans say au like a long a. An English short o sound is a long a. Dog-> Dawg. Pretty simple. Although when it's with a w and not a u I tend to like to pronounce a w after the a...
English is a terrible language! Deutsch ist sehr besser!
