I agree with you, NightAngel. I love that type of clothing. Frilly lacey things... I simply adore anything from long ago...

I used to have a job where I had to wear a white powdered wig and hoop skirt dress. It had all these lace and frills on it and bows and it was so beautiful. It doesn't sound like my type of thing, but I really did enjoy wearing it. Although for normal days, I'm fond of black skirts and tops with huge bell sleeves.

I'm a professional violinist, and I play in theme parks and amusement parks, so I get wonderful costumes. It's always sad when you have to return them. I still have my white powdered wig, though. I just love the clothing from Shakespear's time, the 1700s, and Gothic clothing. That's what I want... clothes... I live for clothes... and shoes... platform shoes... *grins*

Re: Clothing
I love black, but I also like gray, and red. White is nice too, depending on style of clothing. Gypsy is my favorite, I also like the trenchcoats.

Look at what I'm offering you...Your dreams. I ask for so little, just let me rule you and you can have anything you want; just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave.....

Re: Clothing
I recently had a discussion with someone, and the topic came up about trenchcoats. Black ones inparticular.

She says they are kind of gothic. Well, what she really said was a response to my hint of coloring my hair a dark red, and the fact that I'd been thinking about getting a trenchcoat. For one thing, I now live in a state where it rains... a lot. But her first response was, "Why are you going gothic?"

So my question to you is, why are black trenchcoats thought of as gothic? Why do they have to be? Gothic is cool, but I wonder why people have to pigeon hole things...

For that matter, why do our clothes speak for us? Do you think they tell what kind of person we are? Our moods? Our fears? Insecurities?

Just food for thought I guess...

You bring up a good food for thought Reznor.

Why is it that we have groupings such as Jock, Prep, Hick, Punk, Goth... And so many more...

Is a prep considered a person of innocents and purity?
Come on, my personal opinion is that that group is more filthy than a group of gothic patrons.

In my High School it was the Preps and Jocks who were the drug addicts, alcoholics, sex feens...

Out little single Goth child was the innocent one... Trust me... I know... I was her.

It is amazing how much our cloths scream out who we are. Only to shoot us full of Stereotypes.
Quite Sad.

Her kiss is poison,
Her gift is pain,
I am that beauty...
that pain,
that thing that will poison you and leave you dying screaming invain..."

Re: Clothing
Yes, our clothing places us into a stereotype. It is rather unfortunate that this happens, but it is what people have to base their opinions of. I know that I see people everyday, and have to make a judgement on if I wish to speak to that person or not. Now, I despise people so I usually don't speak to a lot of people, but a persons clothes gives us a hint as to their personality albeit a probable false one.

The image that we portray to other people is a mask that we have chosen to show them. If I decide to wear all black, it makes me look darker, hell maybe even meaner unlike a loony toons t-shirt where people are going to think I am more laid back. I have both forms of clothing in my closet, but pending on which I choose to wear, people would not know that I actually own the other.

As a quote I heard says, "Ogres are like onions."

Re: Clothing
Ah yes, the lovely words of Shrek! (sp?)

Indeed, I am like you, I own different kinds of clothing from different "labeling" groups such as gothic, punk, looney tune, Prep... etc.

I dress how I want to dress the day I feel like dressing the way I want to dress.

Does that make any sense at all?
Some people feel that they "Must" dress in a Pacific fashion in order to be expected. Like in high school, if you were not a jock or prep then you were out of the loop.

Little did they know that there was more then just those two groups.

Re: Clothing
That is incredibly common where your clothes label you, or place you into a particular group.

I can understand the highschool thing because most schools are like that, or highschool (or lower) anyway. The unfortunate part is that those jacka$$e$ grow up expecting people to fit into their little stereotypes. They forget that the world doesn't evolve around them and their ideals. In fact, if they just suddenly died... the world would move on and never blink. It is too bad that we allow ourselves (and this means EVERYBODY... nobody is excluded from this, we've all done it) to place people because of their appearance... be it their clothes, grooming, etc.

The issue is that we have no way of knowing a person, so we have to evaluate them some way or another... thus stereotypes will always exist and people will always use them. Even me...

Re: Clothing
I am very impressed by the maturity here, clothes do not define the people but because society needs a way to define people, clothes become what is counted. I don't fit into any group either by what I wear for I am into black and gypsy wear (especially gypsy clothes but the really nice and genuine ones are way too expensive) but at the same time I wear a lot of color and artsy stuff. When I was in high school, I found that everyone despised each other because of what they wore. In fact, I was nervous around one of the goths (stupid, judgemental me) and she didn't like me. We were always looking at each other like we were creatures from another planet. And somehow or other we got to talking, and we liked basically the same stuff and are pretty good pals. Anyhow, the point of my story is the wrapping does not define the package. We define who we are and by judging the clothes, we are showing ourselves to be shallow and superficial and unfortunatly not a one of us can escape that judgement.

Into the darkness one shall travel for the seduction is far too great.

Re: Clothing
Indeed Shadow, you have made some very well rounded comments.

It is almost as if we fear the knowledge that comes when getting to close to a person.
Judging by the clothing of a person relies on sight... Not becoming acquainted with the person.

This topic could be taken in so many new directions.
