Chapter Eight

Gwen watched as Tony walked into his brother's room. Luis had been awake awhile now, but Tony had waited until the rest of his family had a chance to talk with Luis. It said a lot about the kind of man he was. Of course, she had already gotten a few glimpses of that already. He was so unlike anyone she had ever met. That night in New York she had thought him nothing more than a playboy, but now... now she was seeing a different side to him. He was a different man around his family. He wasn't all sweet talk and heated glances. Nor was he the playboy he wanted everyone to think he was. What he was, however, was a man that felt things deeply.

She had to smile at that. She knew Tony wouldn't particularly like that description. He seemed to want people to think of him as a playboy. She secretly wondered if that was so he wouldn't have to live up to so many expectations.

She felt someone staring at her and when she turned her head to look around, she found Theresa. She took a deep breath as Theresa made her way toward her. Gwen wasn't at all sure she was ready to deal with Theresa yet. It was just too soon for her. She had barely made peace with Ethan.

"Gwen," Theresa said hesitantly. "I wanted to thank you for being here for Antonio today. I know what it took for you to come here and I know it means a great deal to him that you are here."

Gwen smiled in spite of herself. "Thank you. I'm glad I could be here for him. He's a wonderful man." More wonderful that she expected him to be.

Gwen blushed when she realized she'd said that last part aloud. She hadn't meant to. Theresa didn't seem at all shocked by it though. In fact, her face lit up as if she just discovered some knew treasure or something. "I knew it. You really care about my brother, don't you?"

She took a deep breath. "Yes I guess I do. But we don't really know each other all that well either." At least, they didn't, outside the biblical sense.

Theresa smiled. "He said the same thing. Maybe you guys should get to know each other better."

"I wouldn't mind that. But I don't know if Tony feels the same way."

"He does. I can tell. I must admit Ethan and I were shocked when we found out that you two knew each other. It's funny how things work out sometimes."

Gwen laughed. She couldn't help it. The irony of it all was just too much. Here she was talking to the woman that was now involved with her ex-fiancé, and the main topic of conversation was her involvement with her brother. She had once thought she would never be able to talk to Theresa or Ethan or anyone in their families, without feeling all that resentment and anger, but here she was, no anger, no resentment, just this feeling as if she had finally let go of the past.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Antonio walked into Luis' room and watched as his brother's eyes lit up at the sight of him. He closed his eyes and said a silent prayer of thanks then walked toward Luis' bed. "Hey little brother, did you have to give us all such a scare? I mean really, superman, getting yourself shot was a little extreme even for you."

Luis laughed. "Yeah well, I had to get your attention somehow."

He smiled and shook his head then took the chair beside the bed. "So the doc says you're going to be all right. How do you feel?"

"I feel wonderful. I feel like the happiest man alive. I have a beautiful wife and we're expecting a baby. All is right with the world."

Antonio nodded. "I'm glad things have worked out for you Luis. I know you and Sher have been through hell, but you know what? It only made you stronger."

"That sounds like something Theresa would say." Luis said with a smirk.

He chuckled realizing Luis was right. It was definitely something Resa would say. "Yeah, I guess she's starting to rub off on me or something."

"Are you sure it isn't Gwen who is starting to rub off on you?"

Antonio's brows shot up in surprise. "Who told you about Gwen?"

Luis laughed. "YOU did. I heard you. You were telling me all about her. You said you didn't think of that night you spent in... Where was it? New York? Anyway, you said you didn't think of it as a one-night stand. You said it meant more to you than that. So what did you mean? Have you fallen in love with her?"

Antonio shook his head then got up and started pacing the room. "Hell no. Luis, I barely know her. How could I possibly be in love with her?"

"Well, I don't know. Looking back, I think I probably fell in love with Sheridan the minute I laid eyes on her. There was just something about her that got under my skin. Still does. From what I heard you say, it sounded as if Gwen did the same thing to you. Am I wrong?"

Antonio stopped pacing and just stared at Luis. "Of course you're wrong. There is no way I'm in love with her. I can't be. It's impossible."

"Why?" Luis asked with a curious expression on his face. "Why is it impossible that you could be in love with Gwen?"

"Because..." he let his voice trail off, unsure of how to explain himself. Gwen got to him like no one else, but love? There was no way. He remembered that look in her eyes earlier. He had thought it looked like love. He shook his head. That was nuts.

"Because what?" Luis asked with a raised brow. "Because you guys barely know each other outside that one night you guys spent together? Hell, Tony, love never works the way we want it to. It's there before you know what hits you. But I'll tell you what, she wouldn't be here if she didn't care about you too. Especially with what happened between her, Ethan, and Theresa."

Antonio walked over and sat back down in the chair he'd vacated just moments before. "What exactly did happen between them?"

"Resa didn't tell you?" Luis asked.

"No. Gwen said that Theresa had pretended to be her friend and all the while was after Ethan. Is that true?"

Luis nodded. "Yeah, I didn't find out until Gwen was walking down the aisle and Ethan called off the wedding. Theresa was one of Gwen's bridesmaids and had walked in first. Ethan took one look at her and said he knew he couldn't marry Gwen."

Damn, Gwen must have been devastated. "So the whole time Theresa was planning Ethan and Gwen's wedding, she was also putting the moves on Ethan?"

Luis shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know. The only thing I really know is that they always ended up being thrown together, sometimes it was Gwen herself who threw them together. She had Ethan and Theresa check out a Honeymoon resort in Bermuda while she was in New York. Then when she came back she had Ethan take Theresa to the prom. I don't know why she did that. It seems to me as if she was almost pushing them together."

That's what he was thinking to. The only question was why? If she had really loved Ethan why would she push him towards another woman? "It doesn't make sense does it?"

Luis shook his head no. "That's a woman for you though. There is no figuring them out so you may as well not even try."

Antonio laughed. "Spoken like a true man."

"You're damn right." Luis said with a grin. "Now why don't you get out here and let me get some rest.

Antonio grinned. "Okay do you want me to ask Sher to come in?"

Luis smiled. "Yeah, thanks and I don't want to see you back here until tomorrow. You need a night away from the hospital. Sher said you had been here since they brought me in."

"I have. There was no way I was leaving until I knew you were going to be all right."

"I know, I wouldn't have been able to either. But I'm fine now so get out of here and take Gwen to dinner or something."

Antonio stood up and gave his brother a wide grin. "That sounds like a great idea. I'd like to spend some time alone with Gwen. We have a lot to talk about."

"Yeah it sounds like it. Well I wish you luck. Just remember not to tell her what do to. I know Sher really hates when I do that."

That was a total understatement, Antonio thought as he walked out the door laughing. His sister-in-law was probably the most independent woman he knew, but he knew from experience Gwen came awfully close. Without even realizing what he was doing, he looked around for Gwen. A second later, he saw her, standing in a corner talking to Theresa. They really were talking too. In fact, right now they actually looked as if they were laughing. Had he just walked into a surreal universe? First, she had talked with Ethan and now Theresa? He wondered if they were making amends. After what Luis told him, he wasn't sure that would ever be a possibility, but now... now he wasn't so sure. They almost looked like... friends. He really hated to interrupt them, but he was ready to get out of there. He was tired not to mention famished.

He had just started to make his way toward them when he saw Sher come around the corner. She stopped in front of him and asked how Luis was. "He's fine. He told me to tell you go in."

She smiled then reached up and placed a kiss on his cheek. "Thanks Tony."

"You're welcome, sweetie. I think I'm going to go grab something to eat, you want anything?"

"Nope, Pilar and Miguel brought me something earlier. Have fun and take Gwen with you. She's got to be starving, you've both been here all night."

He smiled. "That was the plan."

She laughed then walked around him toward the door to Luis' room. "Good! Now I'm going to go see my husband. Stay out of trouble."

I'll try, he thought turning back to look at Gwen. She was alone now and looking right at him, her brown eyes still sparkling with humor. He hoped she would agree to have dinner with him. He really wanted to spend some time alone with her. They needed to talk, not just about that night, but about everything else that was going on too.

He smiled then started walking toward her. She must have had the same idea because she started walking toward him too. They ended up meeting halfway. "Hey, sweetheart."

"Hey yourself." She said giving him a bright smile. "How's Luis?"

"Luis is good. He's already back to giving orders. He told me to get out of here and go home."

She smiled. "Well, you have been here all night."

"Yeah and so have you." He said giving her a full-fledged grin. 'How 'bout you let me repay you by taking you to dinner?"

Her eyes danced and she gave him a kick-to-the-gut smile. "I would love to go to dinner with you. I'm starving. Do you mind if we stop back by my hotel first though? I really need to change clothes."

"Not if you don't mind if I get ready there too. I have a change of clothes somewhere around here. Miguel and mama brought them to me earlier." He spotted a bag in the corner and figured that was probably them. He walked over and grabbed the sack to make sure. Sure enough it was.

He and Gwen quickly said their goodbyes. Since he'd rode to the hospital in the police cruiser with Sam and had left his car back at the airport in Boston, they had to take her car. He supposed he'd have to get someone to drive him up there tomorrow and pick it up. It was too late to do it tonight. It was almost nine. Besides the only thing, he wanted to do tonight was go grab something to eat and hit the sack. He was too beat for anything else.

Chapter Nine

Gwen knew Tony was exhausted so she didn't mind him falling asleep in the car on the way to her hotel. He had offered to drive, but the last thing she needed was for him to fall asleep at the wheel. So she told him no one drove her car but her. It was true, but she would have let him had he not been so tired.

She stopped at a red light and took a minute to look over at Tony. The streetlights provided a light glow that allowed her to study his facial features. He hadn't shaved in a couple of days so he had a little stubble. He looked rough and oh so sexy. Not that he had ever not looked sexy, just there was something about the way he looked right now. Maybe it was the fact that he looked so peaceful in his sleep. His mouth was parted slightly and she remembered those very lips kissing her with more passion that she had ever felt before.

A horn honked behind her, signaling the light had turned green so she stepped on the gas and drove through the intersection. Every few seconds, she couldn't help but glance at Tony. She was drawn to him in a way she'd never been drawn to a man before. It wasn't just a physical thing like she had first thought. It was more than that. How much more she didn't know. But she hoped maybe their spending some time alone could help her find the answers.

She sighed then forced herself to concentrate on the drive back to the hotel. Five minutes later, Gwen pulled into the hotel parking lot and shut off the engine. Tony was still out cold. She smiled and reached over to run a finger along his jaw. He stirred slightly, but didn't open his eyes. She shook her head then leaned closer to his ear. "Wake up, Tony. We're here."

His dark lashes instantly fluttered open. Then he turned to look at her. Their lips were just an inch apart. She started to move back, but before she could, he raised a hand to the back of her neck and pulled her in for a long, slow thought-stealing kiss. It seemed to go on forever.

When they finally broke apart, they were both breathing hard and the windows were slightly fogged. She sent him a smile then turned and grabbed her keys out of the ignition. A second later, she opened her door and stepped out into the cool night air. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath trying to calm her erratic heartbeat then pressed the lock button down and shut the car door. A split second later, she heard Tony open the passenger side door and turned to see him holding up her small black purse. She laughed. She had forgotten it.

She watched as he pressed the lock button down and shut the door. He walked around the front of the car and came to a stop in front of her. "I believe you forgot this sweetheart."

"I believe you're right. Thank you." She said giving him a bright smile as he laid her purse in her hands. His hand brushed hers lightly and a wave of awareness shot through her body.

"Anytime, sweetheart. Anytime." He said giving her the now infamous Lopez-Fitzgerald grin. The grin always made her insides go crazy.

Gwen took another deep breath then turned and headed toward her hotel room. She could feel Tony's eyes on her as she climbed the stairs leading to the second floor. She wondered if they would even make it to dinner. The sexual awareness that filled the air was a lot like it had been when they met that night in New York six months ago. She could still see the look in his eyes as he leaned in to kiss her on that dance floor. God, she thought digging in her purse for her hotel door key, she could still feel the passion in that kiss too.

She finally found the key and just as she pulled it out of her purse, Tony's hand covered her own. She turned and their eyes connected in an electrifying moment of remembrance.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Antonio knew that look in her eyes. She was remembering their night together the same as he was. He'd give anything to be able to take her in his arms right now and love her until the sun came up. But he couldn't do that just yet. They really needed to talk first. There was a lot of things that needed to be said.

He lowered his eyes to the doorknob behind her then leaned in to unlock the door. After he got it open, he placed the key back into her hand and motioned for her to go in first. She did and held the door open for him. As he stepped inside the room, memories of the last time they were in a hotel room together flooded his brain. How she'd backed him up against the wall and started unbuttoning his shirt. How she'd run her hands down his chest and placed tiny kisses along his jaw. How she'd -

The creak of the door closing behind him interrupted his thoughts and he turned to see Gwen standing in front of the door looking like an angel from heaven. The moonlight that flittered through the window lit every beautiful feature of her face. But it was the look in her golden brown eyes that held him entranced. Neither of them moved. Hell, he wasn't even sure either one of them could breathe at the moment.

Just as he stepped toward her, the phone on the bedside table rang causing her to jump in surprise. He laughed. "Saved by the bell again, sweetheart?"

She smiled and walked around him to answer the phone. He turned and watched the gentle sway of her hips. God, she had a sexy walk. Of course, she was just sexy period. A pair of tight black pants covered her round bottom and shapely legs. The dark red silk shirt she wore dipped low in the front and clung to her breasts. He'd about had a heartattack when he'd seen how low that shirt dipped earlier. It was probably a good thing so many people had been around or he wouldn't have been able to control himself. He was having a devil of a time keeping his hands to himself right now.

"Hello," Gwen said picking up the phone. "Mother, hi."

She turned to face him and gave him an apologetic smile. He nodded realizing she needed some privacy and walked into the bathroom to take a much needed cold shower. The fact that he'd left his change of clothes in the backseat of her car, didn't hit him until he'd already stepped under the shower spray.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gwen watched as Tony shut the bathroom door then sighed and leaned back against the bed to listen to her mother rattle on about her not being there when she called last night. She heard the shower kick on and an image of a naked Tony standing under the shower spray flashed in her mind. She could just picture the water running down his chest toward his -

"Gwen!" a voice yelled from the other end of the phone breaking the direction her thoughts had taken. "Did you hear a word I just said?"

She raised a hand to her forehead and thought she felt a little hot. "Sorry, mother, I was just... um... I just have alot on my mind today."

"Like what?" Her mother asked in her stern voice. "Like Ethan? Have you seen him yet?"

The last thing she wanted to do was talk to her mother about Ethan. She still held the hope that Ethan would wake up and realize he made a mistake. Gwen had tried to tell her it wasn't going to happen, but she still refused to listen. "Mother, can I call you back in the morning? I haven't eaten yet and I need to order room service before they close the kitchen. Then I'm going to go to bed."

Another image of Tony flashed in her mind, this one was of him laying her on the bed then leaning over her and kissing his way down her neck toward her breasts. Oh god, she had to quit thinking like this. She was on the phone with her mother for goodness sakes!

"Okay, Gwen. Are you feeling okay?" her mother asked. "You sound kind of funny."

Gwen couldn't answer. The door to the bathroom had just opened and Tony emerged. He was drying his black hair with a towel so he hadn't seen her yet, which in her opinion was probably a good thing. She was sure her mouth was probably on the floor. She shook her head and closed her mouth then let her gaze travel over his hard muscled body. Beads of water clung to his skin and traveled down his chest to disappear beneath the edge of the white cotton towel riding low on his hips. Oh god, she thought sucking in a deep breath, how was she going to get through dinner with that image in her mind.

Tony looked up suddenly and caught her eyes with his. The sexual tension between them rose another notch and she was sure she was going to die from the heat in his gaze.

"Mother," she said never taking her eyes off Tony's. "I have to go now."

"Gwen -" was all she heard before she hung up the phone and rose from the bed. Tony's eyes held the same desire she knew was in her own. She walked toward him and stopped an inch away from him. She lifted one hand and brought it to his chest and the muscles under her fingers flexed. She smiled. At least she knew she got to him as much as he got to her.

"Sweetheart," he said searching her eyes, his voice thick with passion. "Are you sure you want to do that?"

"Oh, I'm sure." She said running a finger down his chest. "I'm very, very sure."

Gwen ran her right hand up his chest and over his broad shoulders to rest at the base of his neck, then used her left hand to run through his thick black hair. A second later, she pushed her pelvis into his and a guttural growl tore from his throat. Then he wrapped his arms around her and covered her mouth with his.

The kiss was unlike any they had shared before. It was hot and intense like lava from an erupting volcano. And just as lava burned everything in its path, this kiss was burning its way through her body and straight to her soul.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Antonio knew the kiss was affecting Gwen as much as it was him. He could tell that by the urgency in which she kissed him. He ran his hands up her back causing her red silk shirt to wrinkle underneath his fingers. Frustrated with the need to touch her bare skin, he pulled it from the inside of her pants and ran his hand up under it until his fingers touched the soft flesh of her back. A moan echoed throughout the room and he wasn't sure if it was his or hers. The only thing he did know is that he had to have her naked... underneath him... now.

He broke the kiss and Gwen muttered a protest. He chuckled slightly, but his attention was more focused on removing her shirt and pants. Once he had completed the task, he stood back and let his gaze slowly, and seductively roam over her body. It was pure perfection as far as he was concerned. When his eyes finally reconnected with hers, he had to suck in a deep breath at the passion he saw in them. They literally glowed with desire and need.

The sexual tension climbed higher and he wasn't at all surprised when Gwen reached behind her back and released the clasp on her bra. It fell to the floor with the rest of her clothes and he couldn't contain the appreciative smile that spread across his face. God didn't make them any better than her.

He walked toward her, then in a lightening quick movement, he swung her up into his arms and carried her to the bed. He laid her down gently then released the towel knotted at his waist. She raked her gaze boldly over him then brought her eyes back to his and gave him a seductive smile. "Make love to me, Tony."

"That was the plan, sweetheart. That was the plan." He said with a wink. Then reached for the edge of her panties and ever so slowly pulled them down her legs, making sure to let his fingers graze her thighs on the way. She moaned and he couldn't contain his smile. He loved how responsive she was. He took a moment to drink in her naked beauty then, once he couldn't bare not to touch her, he covered her body with his own.

Chapter Ten

Antonio woke to find Gwen sleeping peacefully in his arms. Last night had been more than he could have ever imagined. It hadn't been just sex. This time his emotions had been involved as well. That was definitely a first for him. No woman had gotten to him in that way. Was Luis right? Was he in love with Gwen? He didn't see how that was possible. They didn't know each other that well. But then again, after last night he certainly couldn't rule love out.

Antonio raised a hand to her face and lightly brushed away a strand of her silky blond hair. He loved to feel it run through his fingers or touch his chest as it had last night when she kissed her way toward his -

He groaned inwardly and felt himself harden at the memories of last night and the things Gwen had done to him. The first time they both had been wound so tight, it had been impossible to go slow, but the second time... the second time had been slow, sweet torture - on both their parts. Gwen had definitely surprised him last night, he thought with a satisfied grin, she was certainly not a passive lover. She gave as good as she got and the results had been... out of this world spectacular.

This was the first time he'd ever stayed with a woman all night and he was certainly in no hurry to leave either. That had to mean something, he thought. But did she feel the same way? He didn't regret the fact that last night had happened, but he did regret that they hadn't gotten around to talking first. Hell, he had no idea what she did for a living and she had no idea what he did for a living either. Right now, the only he knew for sure they had in common was what went on in the bedroom.

Antonio threw back the covers and slowly pulled his arm out from under Gwen's head, then he slowly slid out of the bed. He needed to think and he couldn't do that if she was laying so close and so... obviously naked.

He took a deep breath then forced himself under control. He walked to the other side of the bed and grabbed his jeans off the floor. Once he'd pulled them on and zipped them up, he looked back at Gwen's sleeping form. One long, sexy leg had pulled out from the white sheets and he couldn't help but remember how they'd felt wrapping around his hips. God, he thought running a hand through his thick, black, scraggly hair, he had to pull himself together.

He scratched his belly and decided that maybe the morning breeze outside would help cool his rapidly heating body. He pulled on his shoes then reached for the hotel room key and almost as an after thought, Gwen's car keys. He supposed he could walk down to her car and get his change of clothes out. The walk would probably do him good, he thought. Hell, he had to do something to occupy his mind, otherwise he was going to wake Gwen up and love her all over again. And he didn't want to do that until they talked about a few things first.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gwen woke to find herself alone in the massive hotel bed. She raised her head and listened for Tony, but heard nothing but silence. Had he left? She pulled herself into a sitting position and looked around the hotel floor for the clothes they had discarded last night. She only found her own. Damn, she thought running a hand through her blond hair and cursing as her fingers tangled in it's masses, he had left without saying goodbye.

She supposed she deserved it, given the fact that she had done the same thing to him back in New York six months before. But she, for one, thought that last night was more than just a one-night stand. Evidently, Tony hadn't agreed.

Gwen sighed then wrapped the sheet around her and got out of the bed. She had just stepped toward the bathroom when she heard a key jingle in the lock. She turned around just as Tony stepped through the door. Her pleasure and surprise at seeing him had to be written all over her face, she thought. "You didn't leave."

"Leave?" He asked scratching his head in confusion.

"When I woke up and saw you gone I thought -" She broke off unable to finish the statement.

"You thought I did to you what you did to me back in New York? Is that it?"

She nodded and watched entranced as he stepped toward her. "Sweetheart, after last night, do you really think I would leave without at least kissing you goodbye first?"

Gwen didn't get to answer that because Tony suddenly pulled her into the circle of his arms and covered her mouth with his own. Their lips slid sensuously against one another and when she parted her lips on a moan, Tony took advantage and slipped his tongue inside. How one simple kiss could start a fire with flames so hot it burned your skin she would never know. But every kiss Tony gave her started a fire. She was beginning to think the flames would never burn out. God, she thought as he lightly nibbled her bottom lip, she would never get enough of him.

Tony slid his hands down her spine to cup her buttocks then pulled her tight against his arousal. Gwen gave a soft moan as he rubbed himself against her. She ran her hands up his chest loving the feel of his warm muscled skin beneath her fingers. She lightly raked a fingernail across one of his nipples and he groaned into her mouth. Then he raised her up and wrapped her legs around his hips. A second later, he was laying her across the bed and covering her body with his own.

Would they ever get enough of each other? No, a voice answered in the back of her head and she knew it was right. She would never be totally sated where Tony was concerned. She wanted him too badly to ever get her fill. In fact, she thought as Tony pulled away and began to lower the sheet around her, they could do this for eternity and it still wouldn't be long enough.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tony lowered the sheet she had wrapped around her body and took one hardened nipple into his mouth. She arched off the bed instantly, moaning in pleasure. He smiled then lightly nipped her with his teeth. Her head moved back and forth against the pillows as he once again took her nipple in his mouth. He increased the pressure of his lips against her and she came unglued. She wound her hand in his hair and pulled him into a steamy kiss that he was sure would burn him alive. Then she reached between them and unbuttoned his jeans. When she reached for the zipper, he pulled back knowing if she touched him all thoughts of slow and sweet would go right out the window.

He looked down into her passionate brown eyes and felt his heart do about ten back flips in his chest. In that moment, he knew without a shadow of a doubt that he was on the verge of falling in love with her. And that was the reason he had to stop. She deserved so much more than he could give her. She deserved someone that could be around for the long haul. That wanted the house with the white picked fence and a yard full of kids. He had to admit the idea of him and Gwen having kids was damn tempting, but he wasn't cut out for the state of matrimony and she deserved nothing less than that. But was he strong enough to walk away?

"Tony?" she said placing one slender hand against his cheek. "Is something wrong?"

He sucked in a deep breath and just as he started to say something the phone on the bedside table rang. He gave her a tight smile then rolled off her. "You'd better get that sweetheart. It could be important."

She raised a brow in surprise, but then she pulled the sheet back up over her chest and answered the phone. "Hello? Father! Um," she turned wide eyes to him. "Yes, I - It's what time? Oh god, I must have overslept. No, call them back and tell them I'm on my way!"

She hung up the phone and was out of the bed before he could even blink. "God, Tony I am so sorry. I have a meeting this morning and if I don't leave now I'll be late."

He nodded then rolled off the bed and buttoned his jeans. "It's okay."

She paused in the doorway and gave him a smile. "How 'bout you let me take you to dinner tonight to make up for it? We could go to the seascape?"

He closed his eyes and looked toward the ceiling. "The seascape is fine, but it's on me."

"Tony, I don't think-"

"What?" He asked opening his eyes and pinning her with a stare. "What don't you think? That I can't afford it? Is that it? Figure the seascape prices are out of my range?"

"I..." She opened her mouth then closed it and shook her head in what looked to be confusion. He knew he was deliberately trying to pick a fight with her and he knew the reason for it too. If he could make her angry enough, then he wouldn't have to hurt her by telling her he couldn't see her anymore. She'd tell him instead. God, he thought rubbing a hand over his bare chest, his heart hurt just thinking about her saying those words to him. Which was crazy because that was exactly what he wanted, wasn't it?

"Tony," she said walking toward him, holding the sheet securely around her chest. "That isn't what I was going to say. That thought never even crossed my mind. All I was going to say is that I don't think I would be able to last until dinner without another kiss."

"Oh," he said feeling like the heel he was. He reached over and placed a soft kiss against her lips. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. I guess I'm not too much of a morning person."

She searched his eyes for what seemed like an eternity then she nodded and walked into the bathroom. The minute she was out of sight, he let out a breath he hadn't even been aware he was holding. He raised a hand to the back of his neck trying to massage the sudden tension out then cursed and fell back onto the bed. How in the hell was he going to be able to sit through dinner knowing as soon as it was over he would tell her he couldn't see her anymore? He closed his eyes and prayed for God to give him the strength he needed to walk away. Because he knew the longer he stayed with her the harder it would be to walk away. And he had to walk away. He always walked away. He couldn't change now. No matter how much he wanted to.

Chapter Eleven

Gwen looked at the blue and white clock on her office wall for what had to be the one -hundredth time that morning. She seemed to be counting the hours until she was supposed to meet Tony at the Seascape for dinner, which as of right now was still five hours away. They both had so much to do today that they decided it would be easier to just meet at the restaurant. She knew Tony had to go to the airport in Boston to pick up his car this morning and then he planned to go see Luis at the hospital. She figured he would want to spend as much time with Luis as possible given the fact that Luis had almost died.

So much had happened over the last few days, she thought running a hand through her straight blond hair, she wasn't sure what to think of it. When she had arrived back in Harmony, she never dreamed she would find Tony here. In fact, he was the last person she ever expected to see again. She wasn't entirely comfortable with the fact that he was Theresa's brother, but she planned to work on it. She really wanted a relationship with Tony and if that meant she had to put aside her pride over losing Ethan to Theresa then she would do it. It wasn't like she still loved Ethan anyway. She knew he had made the right decision in calling off the wedding and after seeing him and Theresa together last night, she knew he was right in choosing Theresa. Even she could see how much they loved each other.

She sighed and closed her eyes to block out the painful memories of the day that was supposed to be the happiest day of her life. She remembered looking into the mirror and asking herself if she was doing the right thing by marrying Ethan. She would never admit it to anyone, but a small part of her had been relieved that he had called it off. Her mother had gone ballistic of course and demanded she make Ethan realize the mistake he was making. But she hadn't been able to see past the pain to do anything. Instead of standing up and confronting them, she had run out of the church, her wedding dress flying behind her, and checked into a hotel for a few days. No one had known where to find her and she was grateful for that. She had needed those few days to get herself together. Once she had, she had gone to the mansion to get her things.

She would never forget walking into Ethan's bedroom and seeing Theresa in his arms. It was like a slap to the face and that was when her pain had turned to anger. They had both humiliated her and she wanted to hurt them both. So she had lashed out, saying anything and everything she could to hurt them. But she hadn't really hurt them. She had hurt herself. She could still see the pity in Ethan's eyes... and the regret in Theresa's.

Looking back, she knew Theresa hadn't meant to hurt her. She just fought for the man she loved. Even though it was the same man Gwen had loved for most of her life, she had to admire Theresa's determination. No matter how impossible it seemed Theresa had never given up hope and in the end, she was rewarded, because she got Ethan.

Gwen sighed again and wiped away the tears from her cheeks. She supposed it was time she cried those tears. She hadn't back then. She hadn't been able to let go of her anger long enough to deal with the pain. But that had all changed last night. When she had seen Ethan put his arm around Theresa and kiss her forehead, she hadn't been able to conjure up one iota of feeling, no anger, no pain, just nothing. She knew the reason. It was Tony. Somehow, he had managed to do the impossible - he'd gotten her to forgive the two people she had every reason in the world to hate. And he hadn't even had to ask her to. She'd done it freely and she even knew why. Somehow, someway, without meaning to, without wanting to, she had fallen in love with him and it scared her.

She had sworn after Ethan that she would never love another man again, but in truth, she had known that night six months ago that Tony was more than just a one-night stand. She had to wonder if that was the reason she had pushed Ethan to take Theresa to Bermuda and then to the prom. Had she secretly wanted Ethan to call off the wedding? Had she secretly wanted him to be in love with Theresa? She hadn't understood how she could have been so blind to Theresa's feelings for Ethan or his for her. But maybe she hadn't been blind. Maybe she had known all along and wanted him to make a choice. Maybe she had wanted him to be in love with Theresa, because deep down she had known she was in love with Tony, a man whose last name she hadn't even known until two days ago. It sounded so crazy and yet, it all made perfect sense.

Now all she had to do was find out if Tony felt the same way.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Antonio started to open the door to Luis' hospital room, but stopped just as his hand reached for the handle. He knew if he walked in that room right now, Luis would be able to tell something was wrong. He didn't want to burden Luis with what he was about to do. God, he thought running a hand over his freshly shaven face, he didn't want to say goodbye to Gwen tonight, but he knew he had to. He could never be the man she deserved. He didn't want to hurt her, but tonight he knew he would. He would give anything if things were different. He would give anything if he could be more like Luis, a guy capable of committing to one woman. But he wasn't like Luis and he never could be. He'd tried once. He'd tried to commit to a woman, but in the end he had screwed it up. He just wasn't cut out to be the forever kind of guy.

He shook his head to clear it then pushed open the door to find Sheridan and Luis locked in a passionate embrace. An image of him and Gwen locked in the same embrace flashed through his mind, making him grip the edge of the door so hard his knuckles turned white. After tonight, he would never see her again let alone be able to touch her and hold her in his arms. Regret washed over him, but he forced himself to ignore it. He was doing the right thing. She deserved better than he could ever give her.

He cleared his throat then stepped further into the room. Sheridan was blushing and Luis was looking at him through narrowed eyes. He just smiled knowingly. "Did I interrupt something?"

"Yeah, you did." Luis said not even bothering to hide his irritation. "Why don't you leave and come back in about twenty minutes?"

"Luis!" Sheridan said playfully hitting him on the shoulder. "You stop that. There will be plenty of time for... fun after you get out of the hospital."

Luis groaned and Antonio felt a pang of sympathy. "Sorry little brother. I didn't meant to intrude on your... fun."

"That's okay." Luis said giving him a small smile. "If it wasn't you, it would have been the duty nurse. I swear the woman has radar. Every time Sher and I get nice and cozy, there she is coming in to check my vitals or so she says. Personally, I think she just wants to check me out."

Antonio threw back his head and laughed. "Spoken like a true Lopez-Fitzgerald."

"On that note," Sheridan said getting up from Luis' bed and giving him a small kiss. "I think I'll go get something to drink. Do you want anything?"

Luis shook his head. "Just you, but I can't seem to do anything about that right now."

Sheridan laughed. "Aw poor baby. Don't worry, you'll be out of here before you know it."

Antonio just shook his head. They were something else. Anyone could see they were made for each other. He still couldn't believe it took them so long to realize it. He supposed it took them so long because both of them were so strong willed and too damn stubborn for their own good. He wished he could have been there for the fireworks. He would have loved to see the look on Luis face as he realized he was in love with a Crane. He'd heard all about the arguing and bickering they used to do. He knew it had to have been highly entertaining.

"So" Antonio said watching Sheridan walk out the door and taking a seat next to his brother's bed. "Did the doctor say when you get to go home?"

Luis nodded. "They ran some more tests this morning and if everything comes back okay then they said I should be able to go home tomorrow."

"Hey, that's great!"

"Yeah," Luis said eyeing him curiously. "Antonio, no offense, but you look like hell. What's going on?"

Antonio blinked in surprise then tried to cover it up with humor. "Gee, thanks Luis. I come to see you and you insult me?"

Luis shook his head. "Don't try to con me, Antonio. Come on, what gives? You and Gwen have a fight or something?"

Not yet bro, Antonio thought rubbing a hand over the back of his neck, but they probably would get into one hell of a fight tonight. Then again, maybe Gwen would agree with him. Yeah right, if you thought that you wouldn't be so worried about how she was going to react. God, there was no way he could talk to Luis about this. He would only try to change his mind. "No, we didn't have a fight."

"But?" Luis asked when he didn't continue. "You sound like there is a possibility you might get into one? Tell me what's going on. Maybe I can help."

Antonio shook his head. He didn't want to talk about this with Luis, but he knew his little brother wouldn't give up until he got some answers. It was the cop in him, he supposed. But damn, a lecture from Luis was the last thing he needed right now. He was already doing a good job of that himself. No, he couldn't tell Luis about his plans. Not until he talked to Gwen. The least he could do is keep it between them. "You can't. It's just something I have to work out for myself."

"Are you sure?" Luis asked in a worried tone.

Antonio nodded. "Yeah, I'm sure. But thanks for the offer."

"Anytime, big brother, Anytime."

An imaged flashed in his mind. One of him handing Gwen back her purse she had forgotten in her car. "Thank you." she said her golden brown eyes sparkling in the moonlight and her smile as bright as the stars above. "Anytime, sweetheart, anytime." He'd said. In truth that was the only thing he had been able to say. Another image of her walking up the stairs leading to her hotel room popped into his head and he wished it hadn't. The sight of her backside was a little more than he could handle right now, especially since he knew that after tonight, he would probably never see it again.

Antonio groaned then jumped up from the chair and started pacing the room. He saw surprise and worry on Luis' face, but he didn't dwell on it. Too many images were flashing in his head. Gwen backing him up against the wall in New York City, Gwen hugging him at the hospital, him kissing her in the car, him laying her on the bed, her kissing her way down his chest to his -

"Tony?" Luis said breaking into his thoughts. "Tell me what's wrong. I can see that whatever it is, it's tearing you up inside. I don't think I've ever seen you like this. If I didn't know any better I would think... "

"You would think what?" Antonio asked when Luis suddenly stopped talking.

Luis let out a laugh and Antonio had the distinct impression it was aimed at him. "You're in love. That's what has got you so tied in knots. You've fallen in love with Gwen. Hot damn! And you said it wouldn't happen. Ha, you're eating your words now, big brother."

"Your crazy. I am not in love with Gwen."

"No? Then why are you wearing a whole in that floor and looking as if you're about to lose your best friend? Are you afraid she won't feel the same way?"

No, it was the exact opposite actually. He was afraid she did feel that way. If she did... then tonight he was going to end up breaking her heart and that was something he would never forgive himself for. "Me afraid? Please Luis. You forget who you are talking to."

Luis furrowed his brow and his voice took on a big brother tone, which was ridiculous since he was two years younger. "I didn't forget anything. I know you like to hide behind that macho image of yours, but I'm not someone you can easily fool, you know. I have the training to know when someone is afraid of something and you, big brother, are afraid. Now why don't you sit back down and tell me why."

Antonio narrowed his eyes. "I am not afraid and I am not in love with Gwen! I'm not."

"Who are you trying to convince? Me or yourself?"

He didn't need to convince himself. It simply wasn't true. He refused to let it be true. Yes, this morning he had realized he could see himself falling in love with her, but he hadn't fallen yet. That was the whole reason he was about to walk away. He couldn't fall in love with her. He just couldn't. And he prayed she wasn't in love with him. It seemed impossible given the fact that they barely knew each other, but he'd seen that look in her eyes last night at the hospital and then again in that hotel room as they were making love. If she wasn't in love with him already, she was on the verge of it and that's why he had to break it off. He would only end up breaking her heart and he couldn't... wouldn't be the one to cause her that type of pain. "Luis I -"

The door creaked open behind him and he turned to find Sheridan. "Hey beautiful, you're just in time. I've got some things I have to do. I'll talk to you both later."

He sprinted out of the room before Luis or Sheridan even had a chance to say goodbye. He thought he heard Luis yell his name, but he didn't stick around to find out. He needed some time to get his thoughts together before he met Gwen tonight. Something told him he would need to have a very level head tonight and be in complete control of his emotions. He gave a slight chuckle at that last thought. Where Gwen was concerned, he had never been able to control his emotions. She could touch him and his mind would go completely blank. He would definitely have to make sure that didn't happen tonight. He knew the longer he waited the harder it would be on both of them when he walked away. But actually walking away... That was going to be the hardest thing he had ever done in his life. He only prayed he had the strength to survive it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two hours later, a completely together Antonio was seated at the bar of The Seascape restaurant. He knew he was a few minutes early, but he just hadn't been able to wait any longer. He wanted to get dinner over with as quickly as possible. He took a sip of his wine and the looked toward the door much the same way he'd been doing since he'd got there. He kept looking for Gwen. He glanced at his watch and saw that he still have a few minutes before she was due to arrive. Taking a deep breath, he got up from the bar and asked the matridee if their table was ready. Just as he was about to follow him to their table, a familiar feeling washed over him. He turned to see Gwen standing in the doorway. His gaze traveled from her black high heel shoes to her shapely legs sheathed in black hose to the hem of her silky fits-like-a-second-skin black dress over her hips to the soft mounds of her breasts. His gaze lingered on the cleavage their for a few seconds then he finally forced himself to raise his eyes to her face. The look in her golden brown eyes literally too his breath away.

When he finally got himself under control and started to walk toward her, a man stepped up behind her and placed his hand on the small of her back. He narrowed his eyes, but then relaxed when he realized the man too old for her. Antonio took a deep breath as she started walking toward him, the man following closely behind her. He forced a smile onto his face as Gwen and the man stopped in front of him.

"Antonio," Gwen said giving him a bright smile then turning toward the man beside her. "I'd like you to meet my father, Jonathan Hotchkiss."

Chapter Twelve

Gwen knew Tony was in shock. She was too. When her father had unexpectedly showed up at her hotel room just as she was about to leave, she had no idea what to do. He'd invited her to dinner, but she told him she had a date. That was when he'd insisted on meeting Tony. She had left a message on the answering machine at Pilar's to warn Tony, but judging by the look on his face, he hadn't gotten the message.

She watched as Tony held out his hand to shake her father's hand and felt undeniable relief when her father took it. She had been a nervous wreck the whole way here. She knew she probably would until her father left and went back home to Chicago. God, she thought tightening her grip on her purse, this was not how she pictured her first date with Tony. Dinner with her father was one thing, but dinner with her father and Tony? That was something else altogether. In fact, it had disaster written all over it.

"Our table is ready." Tony said interrupting her thoughts and capturing her eyes with his. She saw the confusion in them and gave him an apologetic smile. She knew he wanted to be alone tonight as much as she had.

Gwen followed Tony and her father to their table on the other side of the room. Tony held out a chair for her and she gave him a thankful smile as she sat down. Then he turned and started to sit beside her, but instead they found her father had already beat him to it. She saw Tony clench his jaw and knew it was more out of frustration than anger. At least she hoped it was in frustration. If it was anger then she had no idea what she was going to do. Tonight would already be stressful enough. She didn't need to worry about Tony being anger on top of it.

The waiter came and took their drink order, and after he left, the table grew silent. She was just about to ask Tony how Luis was when her father spoke. "So Antonio, what is it you do for a living? Are you a cop like your brother, Luis?"

Gwen sucked in a deep breath at the slight disapproving tone in her father's voice. She had no idea what Tony did for a living. They had never got that far in their conversations. But she knew without a doubt he wasn't a cop. He didn't fit the profile of a one. In fact, when she first met him, she wouldn't have been at all surprised to learn he was on the other side of the law. He had struck her as the rebellious sort. The kind of guy that didn't like rules and regulations. Maybe that was the reason she had been so attracted to him. It really didn't matter to her what he did for a living. She loved him regardless. She just prayed her father wouldn't make some demeaning comment about it.

If her mother were there, she knew she wouldn't have had to worry, she would automatically know that a demeaning comment was going to be made. That was just the way her mother was. Her father was usually a little more tactful, but since this was Theresa's brother she didn't know what to expect from him. She hoped he would treat Tony fairly, but he was after all her father and she knew that if he did insult Tony it was only because of the pain Theresa had caused her. But god help him if he made Tony feel unworthy because there was just no way she would stand by and watch her father insult the man she loved. No way at all.

"No, Mr. Hotchkiss," Tony said taking his glass of wine from the waiter. "I'm not a cop. I'm an architect."

"Really?" Her father asked in a somewhat interested tone. "Would I know any of your work?"

Tony chuckled. "I'm sure you would. The last big project I worked on was the Bryant Hotel in New York City. I designed it."

"Yes, I do know that hotel" her father said nodding. "In fact, I stayed there last week. It's a splendid hotel. The structure really captures your eye. Isn't that right, Gwen? You're the one that recommended it to me. Did you know that Antonio had designed it?"

Gwen was too stunned to speak so she merely shook her head. The Bryant was where she and Tony first met, where they first made love. And he had designed it? No wonder he was in the hotel that night. He must have been checking on his project.

Images of their night together flashed in her mind and she could feel her face flaming at the mere thought of the things they did in that hotel room. She swallowed hard then raised her eyes to look at Tony. The look in his eyes and the smile on his face told her he was remembering too. She started to say something, but her father interrupted with more talk of the buildings Tony had designed. She only half listened to their talk, because in truth she was reliving that night in New York. She wasn't one to believe in love at first sight, but she had to admit if ever there was a chance of it proving to be true it was the night she first saw Tony.

She remembered hanging up from talking to Ethan and starting to have doubts about their impending marriage. In fact, she thought closing her eyes in remembrance, the doubts had been so strong she had taken off her engagement ring and gone down to the bar. She noticed Tony the minute she walked into the bar. He was sitting at a table in the middle of the room, holding a beer in his hand. His eyes were closed so she had taken the time to study him.

Her eyes traveled over black boots resting comfortably on the chair opposite him, long, jean clad legs crossed at the ankles, and a black T-shirt that did nothing to hide the expansive muscles of his chest and upper arms. When she finally raised her eyes to his face, his dark good looks had taken her by surprise. But there was something else about him too. Something she couldn't quite name. Just as she started to turn and sit down at the bar, he opened his eyes and pinned her with a stare. Neither of them had moved. She wasn't even sure they were breathing at that moment. The only thing she did know was that he was someone she knew... someone she knew deep down in her soul.

It had taken every ounce of strength she had to turn away and break the connection they seemed to have, but she had managed it. She took a seat at the bar and ordered a margarita. She had felt his eyes on her the entire time, but she hadn't had the courage to turn around. The best she had been able to manage was glancing at him out of the corner of her eye. She tried so hard to ignore the pull he was emancipating from across the room, but then just as she thought she had herself under control, he had come to sit beside her. She hadn't been able to ignore it or deny it then.

He offered to buy her a drink and she tried to act cool as if she wasn't the least bit interested in him, which they both knew was a lie. He didn't call her on it though. No, Tony being Tony merely smiled and told her if she changed her mind he would be at his table. Then he had left her to mull over his offer. It had taken her all of five minutes to make up her mind and then another three to get up the courage to actually walk toward him. Being engaged to be married should have been enough to stop her, but it hadn't. For some reason, she'd been unable to walk away from him. She hadn't known why at the time, but she did now. It was because deep down she had known he was the man that was going to sweep her off her feet. And he had. She just hadn't known it until yesterday.

The touch of a hand on her bare back brought her out of her state of remembrance. She opened her eyes to find Tony standing beside her holding out his hand. "Would you like to dance, sweetheart?"

She blinked then broke out into a huge grin and placed her hand in his. "I'd love to."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Antonio helped Gwen out of her chair then led her toward the dance floor. Once there, he brought her into the circle of his arms and pressed his lips close to her ear. "So did you bring your father along for protection? Afraid to be alone with me again?"

She pulled back and looked into his eyes, unsure of whether or not he was joking. "Tony, I'm really sorry. I know you wanted us to spend some time getting to know each other tonight. I really had no choice about bringing him. He showed up just as I was about to leave and when he found out, I had a date. He insisted on meeting you. I tried talking him out of it, but it was no use, he had already made up his mind. I called and left a message on your mother's machine trying to warn you, but obviously you didn't get it."

"No, I didn't get it." He said moving his hand along the small of her back and pressing her closer. "I must have left a few minutes before you called."

"Are you upset that he's here?" Gwen asked searching his eyes.

Was he? No, he thought shaking his head, the only thing he felt was relief. "No, sweetheart, I'm not angry. I can't really blame him for wanting to meet the guy his daughter is going out with."

"I think he wanted to meet you because of what happened with Ethan. He was there for me when the wedding was called off. He knows that Ethan broke my heart and I think he blames himself for it." Antonio heard the sadness in her tone and shook his head as the anger started to rise with in him. His little sister was partly to blame for her broken heart and he knew some of the methods she had used to get Ethan were wrong. They were more than wrong actually and he was very disappointed in her because of them. Yes, he knew she and Ethan belonged together and yes he knew Gwen hadn't exactly been innocent in what happened, but he still couldn't believe all the things Theresa had done to try to break Ethan and Gwen up.

"You see," Gwen was saying, oblivious to his inner conflict. "Father is the one that insisted I get involved with Ethan in the first place. At the time, it was part of a business deal between him and Julian, but then as time went on I really fell for Ethan. I've tried telling him that what happened between Ethan and I wasn't his fault, but I know deep down he still thinks it is. I think that's the main reason he wanted to meet you tonight. He wants to make sure I'm not going to get hurt again."

Antonio looked into her golden brown eyes and knew there was no way he could go through with what he had been planning to do tonight. She had already had more than her share of heartache and he didn't want to be the one to cause her more pain. Hell, he'd give anything to be able to erase the pain his sister and Ethan had already caused her. But what was he going to do? If he didn't call things off then they would only get more serious until eventually she wanted more than he could offer her.

Antonio didn't realize he had stopped dancing until Gwen placed one slender hand against his cheek. "Tony? What is it? What's wrong?"

"Gwen," Antonio said turning his head away from her, unable to look into her sparkling brown eyes a second longer. "I can't..."

He broke off to clear his throat that had suddenly become too tight to talk. Then he took a step away from her. He would never be able to get through this if she was touching him.

"Tony?" Gwen asked in a worried tone. "What's wrong? Is it Luis? Is that what's bothering you?"

He closed his eyes as the guilt assailed him. Here he was about to break her heart and she was asking if he was worried about his brother. He shook his head and looked at her. "No, it's not Luis. But you're right something is bothering me."

She nodded. "I can see that. From the serious look on your face, I can tell it's also important. I'm here for you, you know? You can tell me what's wrong. Who knows maybe I'll even be able to help."

She gave him that kick-in-the-gut smile and he suddenly felt like the biggest jerk alive. Here she was offering to help him with his problem and she had no idea that his problem was on how best to go about ending things between them. He wasn't just a jerk. He was a certified jackass, too. There was no way he could tell her now.

Antonio shook his head then pulled her into the circle of his arms and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. "Thank you, sweetheart, but this is something I have to work out on my own."

"Okay." She said nodding her head against his chest. "Just know -."

"I do, sweetheart." He said interrupting her. "I know that you're there."

She pulled back and smiled. "Good. So what do you say we go eat now? I'm starving."

He laughed. "Lead the way, sweetheart, lead the way."

She ran her hand down his arm and laced their fingers together then pulled him back to the table just as the waiter brought their food. He held out her chair and waited for her to sit down then made his way to the other side of the table. He had just grabbed his wine when her father spoke. "I must say I was hesitant about my daughter dating a Lopez-Fitzgerald, considering the pain your sister caused my daughter. But I must admit that after seeing the two of you together tonight, I realize it was all for the best."

"What do you mean?" Antonio asked taking a sip of his wine.

"Well, anyone can see how much in love the two of you are."

Antonio swallowed hard then choked as the wine went down the wrong way. Gwen started to get up, but he shook his head. Once he finally got himself under control, he looked over at her father and found him grinning like the cat that ate the canary. Then he glanced at Gwen who didn't seem the least bit surprised by what her father said. In fact, she almost looked like she agreed with him. Did that mean she was in love with him? From the looks of things, he figured that was a distinct possibility. Ah hell, he thought running a hand through his black hair, what was he going to do now?
