The gate: Late afternoon
A man stood on top of a large rock in a huge desert. His dark blue cape waved in the wind. Looking up he saw that the sun was setting in few hours. Sighing he shifted his gaze back to the village he was watching before. The village looked deserted and that it was by some degree. No humans lived there that was for sure. The buildings had started to collapse because not repaired for so long time. Shrugging Lance jumped down from the rock and walked to the town gate.

At the city gate a large wooden sign hung one nail holding it in place. Looking at the sign Lance read the word carved on it.

"Oilvert"

Looking at the town again he noticed that most of the windows were broken expect for one building just in the main street. He walked to that building and opened the door. The building was a small one and had only one table, bed and few chairs. Looking around Lance found a closet. Opening it revealed a mog!

Lance:"Well, hello there."

Mog:"Hello, kupo!"

Lance:"What are you doing here?"

Mog:"This place is the only safe place in the village, kupo. A witch lived here, kupo. Blessed this place, kupo."

Lance:"I meant what are you doing in this village?"

Mog:"Ragh will leave, kupo. Ragh fear this town, kupo. Safe to go out, kupo?"

Lance:"It is safe now."

Mog:"Bye then, kupo!"

Lance watched the mog leave the building in a hurry and leave the village even more hurry. He pulled a chair next to a window and sat down waiting for nightfall.

Let's see what kind of things lives here.

Not exactly living here but...
(What he finds is a wanderer, a man who explores. Judging from his garbs, the man is a Red Mage, a traditionalist no less. He walks into the area, holding his Oricle Staff and using his power to bring light to the darkness.)

Re: Not exactly living here but...
Lance looked the Red Robe in surprise. He hadn't expected anything living creature here. He walked to the door and opened it.

Lance:"Hey, Red Robe! Get inside from there. It's dangerous out there."

Really now?
(Zen looks up in surprise. He hadn't expected anyone to be hiding in a dingy old place like this.)

Zen: Surely the creatures that live here will fear the light on my staff. Darklings never could stand such lumination.

(Nevertheless, he walks into the room that Lance is in, but he's in no hurry and does not douse the light for obvious reasons.)

Zen: I say, what are you so afraid of?

Scream, monsters, strange light
Lance withdrew from the staff's light. He was halfdemon and so the evil repelling staff wasn't a thing he want near him.

Lance:"Could...you douse the light? And I'm not scared. I want to know what lives here. You're a mage. Can't you sense it. This town. Something lives here. Something evil."

Before Zen had time to reply they heard a loud scream outside. Lance immediately rushed to the window and not seeing anything special walked out. At the center of the city something glowed in the dark.

The sun had already set and it was quite dark now expect the pale moonlight illuminating the area. Lance grapped the long sword he kept in his belt and crept closer. At the halfway small movement got his attention and he stopped. He sneaked to he alley and found a large dead animal or rather a monster. It had been viciously slain and halfeaten.

Lance:"I wonder what did that?"

He walked back to the mainstreet and continued towards the light and just when he was almost able to see what it was it disappeared. Lance stood in the main street confused and then heared moans. Ten strange creatures walked or rather limbed towards him. They had sometimes been humans and also died long time ago.

Great. Undead.

Lance backed away slowly keeping his sword hand ready.

Red Mage. If you want to help, now would be the time

Ummmm....
OOC: Gil, you must have accidentally switched off your ezcodes.

IC>>>

(Zen did not fear hese creatures. He walked out, held up his Oricle Staff, murmured a bit, and began casting Cure spells to down the undead dudes.)

Zen: Of course I can sense the evil here. Why do you think I have this light? Creatures of darkness hate the light and the easiest way to be rid of it is to leave the area.

Slashing zombies
Lance sliced two of the zombied with his sword and Zen's spells drove the rest "alive" six to run away. Lance looked them go worried.

Lance:"They are no ordinary zombies. The one's I have encountered before just attack no matter what the casualties."

Zen:"Maybe they fear my staff."

Lance:"I hope so. I'm Lance. Thanks for your help. The light in the center was a trap and that too disturbs me."

Oh?
Zen: I see... Those zombies are pawns, then, with no mind but that of their puppetmaster. I'm Zen, by the way, and I see that my powers are disturbing you greatly.

(The light in the Oricle Staff wanes a good deal.)

Zen: So let us face the long darkness and see what new devilry has arisen here.

Re: Oh?
Lance:"Yes. Well that's because of my heritage. "

He looked to the alley the zombies had went to.

Lance:*thinking aloud* "I wonder..."

Then he turned to Zen.

Lance:"Let's go down this street."

He pointed the street the zombies had went with his thumb.

Zen:"Fine by me."

They walked down the street and after a block came down to another monster corpse. Examining it Lance noticed that this corpse too had been viciously slain and partially eaten.

Lance:"This one is a day creature. It has ventured here during daytime to search food. "

Zen:"Apparaently it didn't manage to get out until nightfall."

Lance:"Yes. I wonder what has slayed it this way. Whatever has done these wounds has quite talons."

*********************
At some distance away down the street Nightmare, a dead horse whose mane is pure fire and draws it powers from the night, sniffed the air and smelled Lance and Zen. Glancing carefully at the street where it smelled the intruders it suddenly left a loud howl a very non-horse sound. Soon some other creatures appaeared beside Nightmare. They had gargoyle wings and tails though they weren't very large creatures. They were imps. In a way, expect that they weren't alive. Nor were they undead. They were more like spirits. Nightmare looked the street Lance and Zen was and then all the Imps looked the street too. Then they moved extremely fast towards the two adventurer shrieking and conjuring small spears to their dark, transparent hands.

Hmm?
(Zen felt an emanation from his Oricle Staff. Something was nearby. Then, out of the corner of his eye...)

Zen: Down!

(They duck as a bunch of imps sail overheard with their spears missing.)

Zen: The dead that walk? No... They do not feel cold. Some kind of little demons... Imp-ish or something...

Re: Hmm?
Lance looked the imps and casted Fire on one of them with no effect.

Lance:"Damn! Into that building."

Zen and Lance ran to a nearby building and found themselves standing in a tavern. Strangely no imp followed them there though clearly they saw where Zen and Lance went. The room was a dusty one and messy. Tables were broken, chairs turned over and some vine growed on the counter.

Lance:"Nice tavern."

He picked up an old book near the counter and flipped it's pages. Sighing he tossed it to Zen who also paged it through. A single phrase had been writed to every page: "I'm going to die."

Behind the barcounter Lance found a crossbow in a pile of broken glass. It was other wise a useful weapon but it didn't have a bowstring.

Lance:"Lookey here, I found a weapon."

Zen:"Who do you think wrote this book?"

Lance:"Beats me. Maybe someone who had run into this tavern for safety."

Huh...
(He studies the book again.)

Zen: One would think that a person might write down something useful as a warning to others, not this garbage.

(He rummages around for something useful.)

Zen: By the way, wouldn't you think that an imp would feel right at home with fire? Ah!

(He finds a broken bow. The string is still intact. He tosses it to Lance.)

Zen: Work that into the crossbow and see if there's some arrows about.

Re: Huh...
Lance:"Well the horrors here may have driven him crazy."

He got the crossbow working and found four arrows from the floor.

Lance:"Now we have a long range weapon. Say, you are much better in magic than I am so if I distract the imps and you blast them with lightning or blizzard. How's that?"

(OOC: I'm working on a scanned map of the city which I will place on this board. Right now the scanning project has falled into the cursed HP Intelligent Scanning Software. But I'm working on it.)

Re: Huh...
Zen: That seems to be a good plan of attack, but save your arrows for definite shots. After all, it didn't do our...friend...any good.

(Zen was right about that. Whoever wrote that book had to have been completely defenseless.)

Zen: After you?

Fear!
Lance:"Don't worry. I won't waste the arrows. I have other plan in my mind just promise me that you won't attack me."

Zen:"Attack you?"

Lance:"Yes. Just promise."

Zen:"ok then. I promise."

Lance:"Good."

He closed his eyes to concentrate better and contacted one of the demon spirits his body contained. He heard the shirt ripping and stopped the demon side taking more control. Wings of a gargoyle had growed on his back. He stretched them a little and turned to Zen.

Lance:"All set. Let's go!"

They rushed outside and soon the Chaos Imps arrives again. Lance rose airborne and disturbs the Imps while Zen casted Blizzard and Thunder on them. Blizzard did no good but thunder killed them effectively more because of the light effect than the electricity. Lance managed to kill one imp with sword but felt the demon inside him taking over. Having no choice he used all his powers on containing the demon and fell heavily on the street. The wings had disappeared leaving two symmetrical holes in the coat. Also the imps were dead.

The two then continued down the street and suddenly stood face to face with Nightmare. The black furred beast just glared them and both Zen and Lance felt unexplained horror and fear filling their mind.
Though "I'm going to die" lurked to their minds and all hope seemed to vanish. Having no choice they just ran back to the direction they came. At the tavern they stopped panting and heaving. The unnatural fear and horror were gone.

Lance:"I have never felt anything like that. I have a pretty good idea now what made our friend wrote that book. I think I have a second look of that."

They entered the tavern again Lance paged the book again founding nothing special. Sighing he tossed the book to floor and then was startled almost to death when Zen suddenly yelled "hey!"

Lance:"What?"

Zen:"Look the cover."

Lance picked up the book and swiped dust away from the cover. An inscription of a black horse had been drawn on the cover with a coal.

Lance:"Is this?"

Zen:"Yes. The fiery horse creature we just met."

How about that...
Zen: Looks like it was a warning. The guy could only write "I'm going to die!" because it had filled his mind, just like ours. And he incribed what was going to kill him so others would know.

(He keeps looking through the book, seeing if he'd left anything behind as a clue on how to combat the fear. Esuna could help, but the horse would only draw on the fear again afterwards. Shell, perhaps? Maybe, but no guarentees.)

Zen: If only I'd had the patience to learn Holy...

To the center
Lance:"I'm not sure that even Holy will work. I think we should see what's that light in the city center. If it appears only at the certain time of day we should go there in that time."

Zen:"You sure that wasn't a trap?"

Lance:"No. It didn't feel like a trap. More like the zombies there tried to prevent me from going to the center."

(OOC:Sorry. I'm kinda busy. I'll post a longer post here tomorrow)

To the city mansion
They headed back the street to where they left but were forced to head back for the small house Lance had been hiding earlier. There were so many zombies outside that even Zen's staff couldn't drive them away. Strangely no zombie or other creature even tried to come after them to the small house. It was like they didn't sense or notice them at all when they were inside the house.

Lance:"Strange. The zombies don't see us here. The mog I met here said that a witch has lived here. I wonder if there's any information left about her."

Eventually the sun rose and the zombies disappeared. Lance walked outside and looked down the street. Now in the daylight he noticed a large building in the city center. It had a small tower in the middle of it and three floors. It's windows were mostly broken expect two in the west wing of the mansion.

Lance:"That's weird. Look Zen. Those two windows are the only ones beside this house's that aren't broken. Let's go check that mansion.

I don't do windows...
(There was something amiss here...)

Zen: Hmmmm....

(There were heading for the building, but something didn't seem right...)

Zen: I wonder...

(Zen looks up at the sky.)

Zen: I was afraid of that. Hey Lance, we have a problem.

Lance: What?

Zen: They're using time magic to make the days go faster here.

Lance: WHAT?!

(He looks up as well. Sure enough, the sun seems to be moving a little faster in the sky. They'd better do what they need to do and hustle.)

Time
Lance:"We'll better get moving!"

They ran to the building and found that the door was not locked. They entered the city mansion and found themselves standing in a dusty hallway. The strange room wich windows were intact layed right from them. Lance walked to the room's door and tried to open it. It was locked. Just shrugging he stepped few steps away from the door and casted fire on it. No effect the door resisted the magic though to Lance it seemed that the shielding of the door had gone weaker.

Lance:"Zen. Come here. Let's cast fire on the door same time."

(OOC: Next post! To the library. Sorry no time for a longer post. I'm updating my homepages on this weekend and it takes some time.)

FIRE!
(Zen blasts at the same time as Lance and blows the door into splinters. Unfortunately, they've caused a small fire.)

Zen: Oh, for Treno's sake, look what we've done!

(This place was to have a library inside. A fire would ruin everything! Quickly, Zen counters the fire with Water.)

Zen: Phew.... Now, let's get to work. We're burning daylight!

I am the thing the Darkness fears.
