Re: This is Scotty's Thread!
I've actually discussed that with him... it is his signature pose.

Don't know if I mentioned this, but I refuse to take, "this is me with ______" pictures. He worked with me... as evident from the last two that I posted. I believe the first one was called "excited baby." His friend (who was super cute, btw) told him to do another pose and he laughed and then refused.

And all I could think was, "Gee, Scotty looks like a total jerk when he's got his work face on." :( Scotty, darlin', you scare me when you're all professional and crap... sure, that's kind of the point, I get it, but it's still scary.

12/10/06 - WEST HOLLYWOOD

December 10, 2006
Key Club
West Hollywood, CA

Why Georgia (Belief Tease)
Belief
Heart of Life
Clarity
Stop This Train
Waiting On The World To Change
Dreaming With A Broken Heart
Neon (Tom's Diner)
(Stash)
Gravity
--
St. Patrick's Day
Slow Dancing In A Burning Room (The Eraser)
No Such Thing (When The World Is Running Down)

All John solo. Some acoustic, some electric.

What a set. Was only supposed to be 45 minutes, but John gave the people what they wanted for more than an hour. "Noise for Tots" if you will. The room was full of great people and my man did his thing, commenting between the set and encore, "man, this kinda feels like Eddie's Attic."

Maybe that's why he busted out the rarely-played Stop This Train. Or threw some old favorites like Neon and St. Patty's into the mix. Gravity must have been 8 minutes long - John looped the riff at the end and soloed over it. Beautiful stuff. It was a very special night...those acoustic shows in December have a way of getting to you.

And I got to hang with The Chad all day!

In other news, please bring Allen Iverson to the Clippers! I'm talkin' bout Clippers, man. I'm talkin' bout Clippers, man. Not the Knicks, not the Knicks, not the Knicks...I'm talking bout Clippers man. What am I talking about? The Clippers??

The Allen Iverson lip-synch video is hilarious. I remember watching the footage from that press conference and Allen was just so livid. Scotty captured it perfectly. I was crying by the end.

Re: scotty's new blog

Over the past month, I've had 4 cross-country flights. Lucky for me, there were crying babies in adjacent rows on approximately 75% of those flights, preventing me from making the mistake of sleeping on a redeye. So, I read.

I finally finished Dave Eggers' latest gem, WHAT IS THE WHAT, this morning. It was truly astounding. I find Eggers' voice to be the perfect narrator...reading his work feels like I'm hanging out with one of the older, cooler kids from high school. Only this time, they were witty and liked Huey Lewis.

I'm sure you know about some of his other really really really really really really great work as well as McSweeney's (and like me, wish you had more time to read everything they had anything to do with - have books ever been so much of an art form, from cover to cover?? They're so creative that God even feels like he's slacking). If not, in the immortal words of Ty Pennington, "do me a favor and check out your new room." And by "room" I mean "books".

WHAT IS THE WHAT is the autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng, one of the thousands of Lost Boys from civil-war-torn Sudan, written as a novel by Eggers. His story is shocking, unbelievable, educational, and inspiring. You will experience a gamut of emotions from page to page, paragraph to paragraph.

So buy it (or check it out - librarians need love too) and support one of the greatest authors of our generation.
And read it (we're still in the 2007 Resolution-Creating Grace Period) - not only is it compelling, but it might just inspire some good in the way of compassion to the causes working to help so many who have suffered and are suffering from civil conflict across Sudan and across Africa (like I said, we're still in the 2007RCGP).

At the age we were learning the difference between long and short vowels, Valentino walked with thousands of others hundreds of miles across a desert. From what I can deduce, he basically walked from New York to Florida, dodging a war as a child.

At the VERY least, it'll help everyone whose school decided to lose it's last three (and most important) games of the season by 3 points each think about something else for a few minutes.

-Scotty

P.S.: If I recently asked you for your mailing address, please don't buy, check out, or read the book. No reason, just don't.

Re:
NUGGETS VS. LAKERS

I had the joy and pleasure of attending the Nuggets-Lakers game tonight at Staples. While the game didn't live up to the "A.I. vs Kobe!!" expectations, it was pretty awesome to watch my man with the black sleeve run up and down the court.

I know y'all like low-fi photos, so I snagged one of these:

I believe Iverson stole the ball from a certain #24 and made the fast break layup. Good stuff.

The Nuggets' other guard, though, is also incredibly entertaining. At 5'5", it's a trip just to watch him interact with the other players. I think he's only slightly bigger than that LSU lineman was at birth. But dude has game! So much that we decided his current nicknames ("The Double Digit Midget", "Li'l Vicious", and "Six Feet Under") didn't do justice.

So, I present to you a list of potential nicknames for Earl "(fill_in_the_blank)" Boykins:

"Tiny Answer" (hold me closer!)

"Hollatcha"

"The Gearl"

"The Squirrel"

"of Duke"

"No, MY name is Earl"

"The Worm Getter"

"Muggsy Biggs"

"Baby Spud"

"Six Degrees" (it's a small world after all)

"The Real Thing" (if it's not Micro Machines...)

"The Electron"

"EarlPod nano"

"McNugget"

"Notorious T.I.N.Y."

"Fast Forwar- I mean, Point Guard"

"Clark Kent" (think: hometown)

"The Prayer" (he makes everyone look down)

"The Ant" (weighs 133 and benches 315)

"The Brain Stem" (small but mighty)

"The Big Shot"

"Three" (a bit is minute, his #, 11, represented in binary is 3)

"Atta"

"The Gameboy...Advance"

"Backstreetkins"

"Grande or Venti" (not tall)

"The Man"

"Boxer Briefs" (he's under everything else)

"Meets World"

"Ball Out Boy" (sugar, it's going in)

"The Neutron" (think Jimmy)

"Little Boykins Blue"

"Ken Jennings" (he has The Answer)

"City High" (5'5" with brown eyes, smile like the sunrise)

"Speed Limit"

"The Ring Bearer"

"Cinco de Mayo"

"The Haiku" (short and sweet...and 5-7-5)

"Swaggered" (Merle Haggard?)

"McNugget" was my favorite, although if he ever got traded he might have to change it.

HALF-ASIAN, HALF-DIDDY: HALF-MARATHON

I went ahead and knocked out my athletic accomplishment of the year yesterday by running the half portion of the OC Marathon. Mostly because I didn't want to feel like I needed to hold back on any of the hundreds of rum punches, slices of pizza, or scoops of ice cream I plan to enjoy this weekend on The Rock Boat.

It was pretty fun until the 12th mile, when I redefined the word "wheezing". I somehow made it to the end (and a little faster than I had planned), but as I sit here with my face sunburned and my legs so sore they can hardly move, I hate myself.

Anyway, here's a photo of Andy (aka I Drafted LT And Never Needed A Full Team To Make The Playoffs) and I shortly after the finish:

[Photo coming. And say what you will about my outffit, but I was easily one of the most normal-dressed people running.]

We're gonna try to do it again on March 4 - LA Marathon style (the only date that tells you what to do: "march forth!"). This will be after several other marathons:

The Rocky Marathon (I-V, ending with a late showing of Rocky Balboa)

The Power Hour or Case Race (both marathons in their own right)

The Saved By The Bell Marathon (Ms. Bliss to The College Years all in one night)

The Fyodor Dostoevesky Complete Works Marathon (most likely happening in conjunction with Case Race)

-"Hbl Crowe"

P.S.: Bye, Calvin...thanks for er'rethang. Kill it out there. The number 21 has been retired in my heart, never to be used for anything again. I suggest you do the same. Some suggestions to get you started:

"Oh, I got this top from Forever Double X-I"

"I'm just watching a few episodes of Whatchamacallit Jump Street."

"Hit. Hit. Booyah! Highest possible winning hand!"

"My sister? Oh, she just turned the legal drinking age."

"He was honored by a Calvin Johnson-esque salute."

Re: re
EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE

Stop what you're doing right now and buy this book.

Foer, without a doubt, belongs in the Best Authors of Our Generation conversation.

Without a doubt.

I've been thinking for hours how to describe Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and not sell it short in any way, and I don't think I can. All I know is that I was an incredibly awkward middle schooler (I listened to A Brief History of Time on cassette tape each night as I went to sleep) and am emotionally shaken when it comes to thinking about certain aspects of things like family, 9/11, Humility, and, in general, ideas that are bigger than me.

The book is a beautiful, touching story.

Foer's site.
Page on Foer's site about Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
Buy the paperback from amazon.com.
Buy the hardcover from amazon.com.
Buy the paperback from barnesandnoble.com.
Buy the hardcover from barnesandnoble.com.

LA kids, can I suggest Book Soup or Skylight? It's worth the trip.

My apologies to all who are a year ahead of me.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Please Don't Talk About Murder When I'm Eating

Lifeline

"Lifeline" was played solo and is the title track off the new record. The other 3 songs were played like acoustic versions of the full band.

Very cool evening - I was lucky to be in the room, and it was tremendous to see one of the nicest, most genuine, all around greatest guys in music again. It's a simple reminder of why you'd jump into your bright green 1999 Hyundai Accent with some random Frenchman and drive all over the southeast, midwest, and east coast to see as much music as you can no matter the distance, cost, or consequence.

And as ridiculous as it sounds, that sort of poor decision making led to an obsession with live music, which led to an involvment with live music, which led to a job in live music.

Anyway, it was a great night - makes you think about how lucky and how blessed life can be.

JOHN BUTLER AT HOTEL CAFE

I was lucky to catch John Butler Trio at Hotel Cafe tonight - it was BAAAAAAAD. Those guys have a dirty DIRTY groove that is such an inherent part of every tune that you can't help but nod the head and shake a little (even if you are trying to play the part of Super Hip Non-Emoting-I-See-Shows-All-The-Time guy). It's not like I forgot, but I was definitely reminded what a badass this man is. And on toppa all that, he and everyone in his camp are some of the best people around. New record comes out on March 27th - do yourself a favor. New single is here on iTunes. Check out the older stuff, too - it's all good.

Today I went for a jog, ran past a bakery, took a deep breath, and my first thought was "am I about to have a stroke?!??" True story.

New blog: DRH at Hotel Cafe
DAVID RYAN HARRIS AT HOTEL CAFE THIS MONTH

Yes he is....

David Ryan Harris
Hotel Cafe - Hollywood, CA
March 6, 2007

Kalifornia
For You
Can We Get Down
Subterranean Homesick Alien
Genie
Do What You Want
Good Thing

Pretty Girl (Waiting in Vain, Natural Woman, Most Beautiful Girl in the World, D*ck in a Box, Let's Get it On, Play That Game)
Father

This looks like a late entry, but it's really just today's reminder that it's that time of the week to head to Hotel Cafe and see our man DRH lay it down for ya. Hardest working man in LA - off the road, straight into the residency, then back out for the international run. I mean, come on....like Trick, he must love the kids.

And last week's show shone - David threw in some rarely-played tunes like Kalifornia, SHA, and Genie. Can We Get Down had a little "bedspring" action at the end for the people in the back of the room. Pretty Girl was a crowd favorite as usual, and the set closed with a new acoustic tune, Father.

It all goes down again tonight - see you there at 8:45PM (gotta get a good seat, knowhamsayin?). I don't got biscuits, I got a loaf of bread!

And I promise I do other stuff than just see acts a few times a month at this one venue. Once, maybe sometime soon, some of that other stuff will be worthy of a post. Until then, see some music!

Re: re
WHAT A JOB THIS IS

Devin the Dude's "Waitin' to Inhale" dropped on Tuesday, and I can't stop hitting repeat on "What A Job" - featuring Snoop and Andre3000, it's tough to decide who of the three has the hottest verse. Andre isn't back to his 1996 form, but

"...so if I come to your job
take your corn on the cob
take a couple kernels off
then that would be alright with you?"

regarding illegal downloading gives me some hope that "10 The Hard Way" isn't an urban legend.

Anyway, preview Devin the Dude at his myspace page or pick the album up here or at tha sto.
