Okay here's my American Idol 5 quick review and my ranking from #12 - #1.......
12. Stevie Scott - Stevie sang a confusing rendition of "To Where You Are". She was vocally all over the place and while she has one of the more unique voices of the women, she just didn't showcase it well. I think she can do much better, I'm just not sure she'll be given the chance.
11. Kellie Pickler - With "How Far" Kellie once again proved there are just some artists and some songs that you don't try to do. Martina McBride's song is not an easy one to pull and Kellie fell short. It was pitchy and she just never seemed to vocally be comfortable.
10. Brenna Gethers - She sang "You Are The Sunshine of My Life" and I truly hope she is the one to go. She was so aggressive and abrasive and downright hard to swallow. She fought back with the judges not because she had a valid argument but because someone once told her she could had an amazing and she hasn't forgotten. Please America - send her home!
9. Becky O'Donohue - "Because The Night" just didn't do it for me. It wasn't a song that showed over her voice but it wasn't safe either since it showed a different element of who she is. Watching it it just seemed odd. Hopefully, next week she'll be back with a harder song that shows us what she's got.
8. Melissa McGhee - She sang "When The Lights Go Down" and to me wasn't overly impressive. She was very pitchy and I cringed everytime her voice scooped up to the word "Lights". I think she could be good but we won't see her dazzle for a few weeks if she can stick around.
7. Heather Cox - Heather Cox picked the safest song of the night in "When You Tell Me That You Love Me". Here's a bit of advice, DO NOT pick an easy song when no one knows who you are. Everyone needs a memory if they are gonna make it to the top 12 and this was not memorable. Her voice was fine, boring, but not painful.
6. Kinnik Sky - Kinnik sang "Get Here" and while I believe she has the vocal prowess to make it into the top 12 unless there's a huge shift in personality she won't make it much further. She seemed way too robotic which led to Simon's Caberet analogy. Choose a better song, connect with the crowd and look like you're having a blast.... and you'll get to stay.
5. Ayla Brown - I almost choked when I heard her say she was singing "Reflections" but somehow Ayla managed to show us that maybe, just maybe, she has the pipes to pull it off. Show me some personality and open up... and I might like you. I think she's safe for next week but now that she's tried Cristina Aquilera... there's no safe songs from here on out.
4. Lisa Tucker - "I Am Changing", in my humble opinion, was the wrong song choice for her. It didnt' highlight her strengths but just kinda was there. She has the ability to be something more if she can choose the right music and be who she is. She's going to be a fan favorite and should be safe for awhile.
3. Mandisa Hundley - Singing "Never" was a great choice for her. She started the night off with a strong perfomance and set the bar for the other girls. This girl rocked Heart! That's not something that can be said of many people. She gave us something to compare everyone else to and her performance stuck in the back of our minds throughout the night. With the class in which she handled the Simon issue, she will only gain more fans and have a deservedly strong fan base. This one's sticking around.
2. Paris Bennett - Sang "Midnight Train To Georgia" and I adore her. Why? Because she was fun to watch and maybe the previously boring performances disappear. She has life, energy and love for what she's doing. Vocally it wasn't the hardest of songs but it really showed off her unique voice. It's hard to believe someone that young can pull off a Gladys Knight song but she did. We've heard what she can do vocally in the past and as long as she reminds us and continues to engage the crowd, she's not going anywhere. YAY!
1. Katherine McPhee - Is there any other who should be #1? I was concerned at first when she began "Since I Fell For You" and seemed removed and distant - total nerves. But it didn't take long for her to warm up and really shine. This girl has some pipes and knows just what to do with them. Technically she was the strongest of the night and the lower key for this song was brilliant for her voice. She did not play it safe. It's gonna be so easy for people to fall in love with her and support her to the end.... expect to see her around for a long, long time.
