is the sohc a weak engine to turbo?
hello all. i have a 96 ex coupe and was thinking about turbo-ing it. im a college student and on a limited budget (but if i do turbo, i plan to eventually do all the necessary work in order to make it reliable) im looking for a mid to low 14 sec. daily driver that will last me for many years to come with proper maintenance and care.
with all that said, i have a few concerns about the 96 ex engine.....specifically that it is a weak engine, as compared to the "B" series.
can someone talk me out of getting a b series swap, and give me the virtues of the sohc?
i have 3000.00 to begin with and was thinking about getting the greddy set-up/bov/intercooler plus labor to install it all.
could i safely run this set-up, provided i dont abuse the engine and tranny for a few months, while i save up to get it tuned and built?
i know there are alot of quesitons, but i would appreciate it if anyone could take some time to make me a "d" series convert.
thanks

drag!
I can get you a drag gen III full turbo kit for your car for 3000.00 even. Let me know or give me a call if no answer leave a message 256-794-3385.
Re: drag!
if you would have read the post correctly, i was NOT soliciting offers to sell me a turbo.
I was simply asking whether or not a y8 was reliable with only greddy set up/bov/ and intercooler.
(untill 3 months down the road when i get more money for hondata and tuning) Edited by: Oaclcs at: 3/27/03 5:35:25 pm
hey
Well if you can get a b18c1 get it dont get a crap b16, but if the b18 is too much $$ then just turbo the d16, im probobly goin to get me a b18c1 Turbo some time in the future, yeeeha!!!!
strength of the D16
I can tell you that I have a custom turbo kit I built with a T25 turbo intercooler and vafc hack and I have had it on my 94 civic ex for over a year now. the car had about 140,000 miles on it before the kit was installed and the engine is still running strong at 151,000. the feel of the turbo spooling is well worth the money invested. Have faith in the d16 motor if you take care of it it will take care of you. by this I mean if you feel like getting on the gas turn your music down and learn the sounds of your engine if you make a habit of this you will be able to better detect the ocasional ping or posible exhaust leaks. Bottom line is, go for the turbo the engine will last for many more years if you invest in some time on a dyno for proper tunning, don't get boost crazy, watch your guages, and happy boosting.
Re: strength of the D16
With proper tunning and fuel management u can run 10lbs no problem also depending on the condition ur car is in before u turbo it....and by the way www.importparts.com has drag3 kits for 2600.00
Re: strength of the D16
How is the T25 on high rpm range?....(5500 +)

A'pexi turbo
look bro i just got my turbo a A'pexi turbo w/intercooler A'pexi also and is ball bearing turbo i got it installed and everything fo 2,200 these turbos run good as hell your allready at full boost at 2,000 rpm and dosent ping the d16 is a very reliable motor put it like this a honda motor is better than mitsubishi, mazda anything else and the parts are not that expensive go with a A'pexi turbo ball bearing is a p18
turbo kit
i make turbo kits for d series. i had a crx that i turbo and it ran just as good as a b series motor. i sold it because i got a neon that i turbo and it ran way faster than any regular b swap. i make the kits for only $1000, thats with shipping and i can tell you anything you need to know about turboing those things just call me at 715-212-1168 ask for john if im not there ill call you back.
but turbo is better than swapping just to get the same result for less money. $1000 for turbo rest for other things to make go faster. or closed to $3000 for motor swap. the motor will handle it if you do maintain. there is no weak motor just lazy mechanics.
thanks
john
Re: is the sohc a weak engine to turbo?
Hey Orac...I know it might be a little too late to reply to this but let me tell you this...I have a turbocharged D16Z6. It is a very strong motor and a lot of people don't think so...first let me tell you that there is a crx in sports compact magazine...i believe its the march-june issue..somewhere around there..it is running on a 1.6 D series motor non-vtec N/A. The car has about 345whp and is doing 10's at the 1/4...so believe me a D16 does miracles...
I am running the greddy turbo kit on stock internals at 13psi with greddy e-manage ems, 345cc prelude injectors, vortech 12:1 fmu, custom fuel rail, holly high pressure 255lph (67gph) fuel pump, accel coil with msd cap and rotor and nology coil charger...my 1/4 time is high12's and and low 13's...i dyno tuned with 301whp and 285torque......i am looking to squeeze 500whp soon when the entire bottome and top is complete...so yesssss...D16 does miracles...don't believe what everyone says....remember tunning is the key and tune to what works best for you not what works for anyone else....
cheap
I know lots of people who have turbo D16s that run reliably everyday, but the real bueatof the D16 is how cheap they are. So what if you blow a motor after six months or a year, put another one in for like 300-400 dollars.

re
Incognitoracerr, I don't think that you're running 300whp on only 13psi. I you are, show some proof. By the way, if you're car is in good shape, your car will be able to handle the turbo. Besides, you'll be able to laugh at all the other people whom are surprised that they got beaten by a SOHC. To save money you should do all the install. Anyone can do the install.
Turbo D16 durability
A customer of ours has a bucket 90 Civic hatch, 100,000 mile+ D16A non-vtec has a best time 13.2 in the 1/4 on slicks @ 10PSI. AFC hack and 450's. Dynoed 173 WHP. Maybe not impressive but do the math Hp/weight on a 2000lb car and you've got something. Has cost him 3 headgaskets and 2 transmissions so far, but he's just using stock headgaskets and prolly needs head milled. The diff pins twist in the diff casting, then shoot a hole in the tranny, the biggest problem. Avoid slicks and super race clutches and you'll be fine.
Turbo kit
I saw your reply that you make turbo kits for the D16 engine. I was wondering if you have more details on it (pictures or any specs)? I have just started taking my 95 Si to the track and would love to have some more "GO", but as everyone, I too am somewhat limited in the $$ I can spend. Thats why I am interested in the kit you make.
thanks

Re: 95 civic dx
I have a 94 coupe dx, D15 Boosted to 6psi. My fastest run to date is 14.5 I know that is not fast but that is ok for now. This winter it build time pistons rods the works so I can crank the boost and keep reliabilty factor. I say go head and boost it if something fails D16's are easy to come buy now days. Good luck and Happy tuning.
