getting a bay dog to catch
Try running it with a good catch dog, sometimes they can pick up the knack. I've also known a couple of bay dogs to start catching after they've been cut or bitten by a hog.

WHY ON EARTH
Why on earth would you want your baydog to catch? It seems more reasonable to me to get a cheap catch dog rather than take a chance on your baydog getting hurt. Brandee

baydogs
I have baying events and Ihave seen men give dogs away that started catching in a bay event because baying dogs are just that bay dogs ??? but ther is catchey gretty bay dogs and Ihave had catch dogs that bay and wen the hog moves to change address or wen they here hunters coming on they catch and then its ham smoken time I hunt in k.y and most of the baydogs here will catch we hunt in the mountens and not maney catchdogs can stay in the race long enough to bring them to a stop most run out of gas first so were all ok with that here but we still fear the dreaded sporkens that a baydog can get . a bay dog that catchs must have real good skills or hog savey jim redbone

BAY DOG PREFERENCES
My strike (find) dogs will only grab the hog to shut it down to allow my catch dogs to get there. My find dogs will not catch under any conditions. I have found that catch dogs can be replaced pretty easily, but good strike dogs are hard to find. I do not mean to stir up a hornets nest, but I have read so many posts about people having to have gritty strike dogs in order to shut down the hog so your catch dogs can get to it. This is my question: Are these bay dogs just barking at the hog or are they grabbing its rear to stop it? My dogs are silent until the hog is facing them. Then and only then will they bark. They will grab the hog as many times as necessary to get it to face them then they bark until the catch dogs arrive. It never ceases to amazeme that people gripe about not having gritty enough strike dogs when they do not have a good one to begin with. In my opinion, a good strike dog is one taht will range out about 1/2 - 1 mile. Find a hog adn shut it down. This dog should be totally silent until the hog is facing it and the hog is stopped. When teh catch dogs arrive this strike dog will leave and move on to another hog. I do not know how you guys hunt, but this is how I hunt and it works for me. If my strike dog catches, I get rid of it because I see no sense in putting time in to a dog that will most likely get injured or killed. My 4 strike dogs are just what I described as my ideal dogs and none will catch the hog when the catch dogs get there. All will move on to another hog or if there are nomore hogs they will stay back out of the way adn watch. My strike dogs have not ever been cut by a hog. (knock on wood). Now my catch dogs are a different story. I think that the idea of letting your bay dog get cut to teach it something is horrible and is the wrong way to teach it something. I do everything known to man to protect my dogs when hunting. Sometimes my efforts are worth it and then there are the times that no efforts would have helped. But I am proud to say that in 10 years of hunting hogs with dogs, I have only had one dog get killed and it was not the hog that killed him but the vet that I took him to to sew him up. This is just my opinion and I mean no disrespect to anyone on the board or to their way of hunting. Brandee

catchy baydogs
Well here in the fla swamps we use baydogs that also catch!! baydog that we use in the woods are to gritty for baydog trials. and baydogs that bay in a bay trials are no good in the woods been there done that!! they have no grit and get killed!! cuz a boar in a pen is not the same as a boar in the woods. a baydog needs to have some grit to shut a hog down anless you run a pit with the baydogs. pitman

If your bay dog catches then what if they get on a big hog and he is far from you then the bay dog catches him? You will be a long way off then a dog that is not really bred to catch may get killed especially by the time you get there cause some hogs don't squeal trust me i know. Then you'll never know the hog is caught cause the dog that is supposed to bay and let you know is to busy catching to bark. >D

hog hunting
i have been hog hunting for 18 years and i have not yet not heard a hog squealing from 5 miles away. if you have some aggressives dogs then he is gonna squeal. my blue ticks and plott hounds are aggressive enough to make the a hog ( no matter what the size ) squeal. if you are doubting that them bring your dogs and yourself to the florida swamps cuz we dont raise , train or hunt no @#%$ dogs.

I have caught hogs with full blooded pit bulls 2 dogs on a little gilt and she didn't squeal a bit. i guess georgia hogs are tougher then your florida hogs cause that ain't the first hog i have seen do that. A big enough boar hog won't squeal either, i promise you that. >D

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!111
I use greyhound crosses for my catch dogs and they will also bay. One of my main strike dogs is 1/2 blackmouth 1/4 running walker and 1/4 lab. He will not catch the hog. He will put his teeth on it to stop it, but he will not catch and hold it. I havemy catch dogs for that. And by the way, if greyhounds won't catch then why are so many hunters trying to get their hands on them to use as running catch dogs??? You need to shut up about things you know nothing about. My greyhounds will out catch anything you have I am sure. Brandee

you believe what you want to believe but if you come around southeast georgia around these farms and stuff where the tame and the wild hogs have bred or where the tame and some of the Russians around here have bred then you'll learn that a hog that has never seen a pin will cause all kinds of hell on your dog pack. And then if your dogs are good enough to actually catch the hog if he is over 200 lbs and in good health then he'll never let you know that he is caught other then by the deep low grunting he'll be doing and the panting that your dogs will be doing.Me and my buddies caught one the other day and the only way we found them was by the tracking system and then we heard the hog grunt and one of the bay dogs panting like a mad dog.:D

I think there is entirely to much bullshit being talked on this page. It sounds to me that a bunch of people are talking about something they don't have a clue about.. Who cares if a hog squels or not there caught aren't they...... Read some more articles

AGAIN!!!
My strike dogs will bark until I get to the bay so if a hog does not squeal it does not matter. Like I said before, if you would have paid attention, my strike dogs do not touch the hog at all once my catch dogs get there and catch it. They bay it until I get there to tie the hog. If you would like to see what kinds of hogs we catch here with our "sorry dogs" go to my web site and see. 200 pounds is pretty average here. Website link is www.crazydogranch.net . I need to update it, but Ihave been hunting my "non-catching" dogs so much I have not had time. I agree, too much bullsh** here. This thread is dead as far as I am concerned. Brandee
