hunting down south
does anyone know the best southern states to hunt in? i'm looking into doing some traveling but i haven't decided where to go yet. any suggestions guys?
Re: hunting down south
Do you just want to hunt hogs? And how do you want to hunt them? From what I've seen, Texas is generally more expensive. I only hunt texas because I live here. On the plus side, depending on your $$ situation, you can hunt alot of different critters in one trip. Lot's of exotics and the like. You also have to figure out where you want to hunt. An east texas hunt is way different from a south texas hunt.

hunting in the south
I live in Southwest Florida and have hunted in Georgia, Alabama and Texas.
Florida is great if you can hook up with a person who has a swamp buggy or a private lease to hunt. The buggy adds a special element to the experience. Many of the hunters here use dogs to hog hunt in a catch-and-release manner similar to fishing. Thre are also several public lands that can be hunted and out of state hunting license is very affordable. I've heard, but haven't had the pleaseure, that the largest Axis deer heard is in central Florida. There are a few guide/outfitters in each are of the State. I personnaly own a swamp buggy and hunt the Big Cypress national Preserve - lots of roaming area and it feels like "survival" hunting. If you're interested I can give you the local number for the Sportmen's Club and see if you can get hooked up with someone down hear. Most of the hunting hear is inexpensive.
Texas is a great experience if you want to select a guide and outfitter and are willing to pay the price. There are several ranches to choose from but call and ask questions. many of the ranches are large (50-100 acre) pens and the animals are "trained" to come when they hear the feeders. I haven't done any free range hunting in Texas, but I'm sure that it's available as well. I paid about $2,000 for my 3 day trip (out of state license & plane fare excluded), but this was a special hunt offered through NRA and I was guranteed a buck. I am definitely returning to Texas someday but will probably try a different type ranch.
My favorite southern spot is Alabama, just South of Montgomery. I understand that there are several outfitteres there for deer and turkey hunting. You can book an outfitter like you book a hotel at a nightly rate. The outfitter that I used was a personal friend who didn't charge me but the daily rate I beleive he charged for and unguided deer hunt was $150 per day, bring your own food. You add on a guide for another $100 per day that increases your chances significantly of bagging an animal. I liked Alabama the most because is was free roaming deer and they're much bigger than what we have in Florida. There is still no guarantee that you'll get a deer every time (I got 1 in 5 trips).
I hog hunted in Geargia, which is very similar to hog hunting in Florida. The deer hunting is similar to Alabama. I also enjoy the hog dog feild trial in Georgia. If you can get away to one of the feild trials, you can probably find out the best areas tohog hunt in Geaoriga.
Good luck!

i have hunted hogs here for over 20 years.most of your private ranches here in texas are way too expensive.there is a place in palestine ,texas that is very affordable.it is the frontier ranch.you get 3 days of hunting,3 hogs any size, and your room furnished.all you have to pay for extra is food and processing.we saw over 100 hogs in 3 days.it is bow only and is in a very swampy area
