Re: is script for a jesters tear the greatest album ever?
No.... but it's one of the best debut albums ever.
Script was described in a book as "the first tribute album" and Marillion as "the first tribute band"
The above quotes are not precise but they're near enough cos I can't be arsed to dig the book out and check my facts.

Nope. That'll be Afraid of Sunlight. But then you won't have heard of that, as you appear to have been living under a stone since Fish left. Welcome back to the fold though!

Afraid of Sunlight
Afraid of Sunlight is a great album, but it takes some time to get used to. When I first bought it I did not like it at all, I missed the Guitar solo's and lengthy instrumental parts. But after a few months and a having seen the title song and King performed live, is grew on me. I now think it's a great (if not the best) album they've done. Brave had the same effect. I had the single "The great escape" and loved it very much, and I was anticipating a floyd kind of album. When I came home with Brave I found it very dark and disappointing. But when I saw that concert live, that was such a great experience, that made me pick up the album again, and now it's just beside AOS. The album This Stange Engine I liked completely when I got it first, but this lost its attracktion over the years (for most songs).
Re: Afraid of Sunlight
Of course.... it's all each to his/her own... but for me AOS is the 2nd best album Marillion have done.
It's not without it's flaws of course... some of the songs have VERY tenuous links with the albums theme and others do kinda jolt the flow of the album but overall I do think that it's a marvellous collection of songs.
Best albums
Hey folks, I've just rediscovered my love for Marillion (I was 16 when "Misplaced childhood" came out) by chance on Kazaa. After Fish left, I just couldn't get into the new stuff and I also Fish lost his way too after the split.....snifff!
I think "B'sides themselves" along with "Misplaced Childhood" are the best albums.
My favourite Marillion track is "Cindrella Search" which has simply the cleverest lyrics ever written.
