Welcome to the... Message Board for Plymouth Roadunner Owners & Enthusiasts (including Superbirds and GTX) Fellow B-Body Satellite and Charger and F-Body owners also welcome
The guts between the ford and chrysler dana's are the same and are interchangeable. The difference with the truck Dana is that the ends are different than those used on Chrysler passenger cars. It also doesn't have any provisions for a pinion snubber. Other than that, you can use the Truck Dana on your RR. You will have to modify or ensure location of spring perches and axle tube lengths (you gotta replace the ends anyway). Obviously, you will also need new axles since the old ones were 8 lug and also probably the wrong length.
The Ford Truck Dana 60 is just as strong as the Chrysler passenger car Dana. That's why Ford used those on their heavy trucks instead of the 9 inch.
Re: Dana 60's
the '74 will go in using 68-72 spring's and hangers.that's how you have to put one in a 74 in the first place so the perches should be correct, also moser has axles for the other one you have, you need 8 3/4 ends and mopar backing plates and 10" drums(the mopar plates/drums will automatically give you 1/2" wider tire clearance due to the wheel lip clearance for the rim, than the dana's),on the stock axle width, moser can supply all the axles, bearings as well as a sealed bearing to take the place of the PITA mopar endplay adjustment ring.Moser portland,IN 219-726-6689...have a ton of fun!!
The 74 rear end is most likely a 9.25 and not a 9.75 Dana. A friend of mine is restoring a 70 6 Pak 4 speed Road Runner and needed a Dana. He went to the wreckers and took the center section out of a Ford truck Dana. He didn't purchase the entire Ford Dana that day because he wanted to compare it to the Mopar Dana that I have apart first. Well we discovered that my Mopar Dana axle splines were too big to fit into the Ford Dana carrier, but 8.75 axle splines fit the Ford Dana perfectly. $o he bought my Dana.
Something to consider, I'd rather have larger axle dia. as well as a larger ring and pinion. and not one or the other.
Bye

Re: Dana 60's
i guess i'll have to tear them apart and find out!!! now i'm all confused as to which one to use!!!
on a side note, i haven't looked yet but do you think my 8 3/4 will have the 742 case since it's in a roadrunner???? i'll be crawling under it to find out when i get back from vacation!!!!
Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse you on the rear end. But that's what we encountered ... the axle spline size difference. Why are you planning on changing to a dana anyway??
If your Runner has the original 8.75 diff, then it would be a 742 case. 741's were found in light duty applications, as I'm sure you already knew.
My 68 Runner still has the original diff with 3:55 ratio. I was very surprised to find it still there. I do a 35 mile (one way) highway trip to work daily, so I'm putting together a 2:93 s/g for the car.
Re: Dana 60's
i wouldn't use either unless i was racing the car,it will be cheaper in the long run to build a strong 489 case S.G.,if you already have an 8 3/4 in the car,my 69 RR still has the original 489 3.91 it came with(A31 HDaxle pkg.) i am building a mud drag race truck and the only reason i am using the dana is because of the 8 lug setup w/44" tires,on the street you can't beat the 8 3/4..it's all i use JMO.
Re: Dana 60's
The MOPAR 9 1/4 is actually a stronger rear than the 8 3/4. The 9 1/4 is beefier and still maintains the same weight as the 8 3/4. Also the 9 1/4 pig is all one piece unlike the 2 piece 8 3/4. And best of all, parts are cheaper and more plentiful since the 9 1/4 is still in production. Check out the link....
